20-30k is affordable. Car itself isn't that visually exciting to me on the exterior. The interior is very stylish though.

Perhaps affordable to get, but need to set aside a good chunk of money for maintenance routine and otherwise. Cost of ownership on a Merc is not cheap.

Honestly, if i had 20-30k i would be getting a 370z, c6 vette, evo x, for around the 30k, and 350z nismo or pontiac g8 for around the 20k...

those are all much newer cars with less maintenance

Toyota engine, no need to worry about crazy maintenance costs. Plus its one of the best handling cars on the road.

G8 is 23-33k GT vs GXP. If all goes as planned that's the car I'm looking at.

370z...meh. I'm not a Nissan fan. C6 Vette...wouldn't bother unless it was a Z06. C6 Z06= 45k. I've even considered an E46 M3 but again, you're paying a premium for the badge. And on the M3, there's part of me that would love to be in that club but also another part that feels like I'd be a sell-out for doing it. From the outside looking in, those guys aren't as down to earth as a CL type crowd.

Theres no denying the Z06s performance, but I dont know if I would buy one. The Nissan Z is nice, but same deal. And there are a few Bimmer owners that are cool, but most are douches.

Thinking about it more....If I were to keep the CL as a daily, Id definitely pickup a Caterham. You dont see them often (if ever), they handle amazingly, and they are fucking quick in a straight line too (0-60 in 3-4seconds depending on engine, some models can even hit it in the 2 second range). Its a no frills car though. You could daily it but its not the most comfortable.

I love proper handling cars though, so Im not always into straight-line speed.

Shhz, I hate it too!! Trust me, I do. At times, I wish I didn't give a damn what I drove so as long as it got from Alpha to Bravo BUT...that's not the case. I guess, it's like a drug...when the effect starts to taper, you always want that high. I've been eyeballing some items that may bring back the CL's appeal (at least somewhat). I think the trip from Tx to Md averaging 30mpg's *give or take* per tank has helped it keep a place in my fleet too...and that was on a dirty air filter, old tires and in need of an alignment and oil change. No telling what it would've pulled down with a PROPER servicing before the long road trip.

I've got the bug to get a new/different car too. I've done some shopping around. The problem is that it's not easy to find a better car than the CL-S6MT without spending a ton of money.

I have driven:
BMW Z4 Fun, fast enough, comfortable with the top down. With the top up I have to contort myself to keep from banging my head when getting in or out of it. Not something I'd want to live with day to day.

BMW 325 convertible. Kind of a grandma car.

Volkswagen EOS convertible. Even more of a grandma car but surprisingly quick.

Nissan 350Z convertible -enthusiast model. Definitely a sports car. Better, but not that much faster or better handling than the CL. Uncomfortable seats. Very little storage/hauling capability. Besides there is a ton of them for sale around here and I wonder why.

Mercedes SLK Really nice looking car IMO. Not noticeably faster or better handling than the CL. I heard some squeaks and rattles when going around the corner. I pulled it back into the dealership and the salesman asked me to put the top back up. I pressed the button and heard the motor whirring but the top only went partially up. Then the salesman tried it and it did the same thing. Then he went to get someone who knew more about Mercs than he did. Same thing. Eventually, every guy in the dealership was standing around the car trying to make the top go back up. I left.

Basically, I'd like something quicker and better handling than the CLS without losing any of the comfort/convenience features. I'd also like to keep the reliability/ low maintenance costs without spending more than 20K. I don't think that car exists. Do you have any ideas?

I'm not sure that car exists either. For now, I've decided I'm going to keep the CL...but I'm going to look into either a Pontiac G8 or an Audi A5/S5. The Audi satisfies my desire for a stylish coupe. It's what a NEW CL-S should be. Classy lines, tech-driven and comfortable/well designed cabin. Unfortunately, I'm in a love triangle with it and the G8. Everyone that I've asked about it says that "you'll love it". Any description of why is like the now popular question on the radio commercial for Dr. Pepper. "What does Dr. Pepper taste like?" "Dr. Pepper tastes like...ummm, well...Dr. Pepper". That's about the gist of the love for the G8.

Either which way I choose, barring my girl, getting one and I get the other...I've got some tricks up my sleeve already for either one.

I picked up another cl6 as a daily for cheap I'll do the same mods without any trial error but I'm still in love with the e55 or e63 I have kids now so I need a four door... Still wanna see the 3.5 Sc dyno #s it should be in 360 range I hope

I have had one CLS or another for about about 7 of the past 9 years.
What I have learned is.

Even when you have the means to move on from the CL (meaning you also dont need the cash from selling it), you should consider keeping it. You will miss it. Doesnt matter what car you move into. The tranny/engine/comfort/scarcity combo is rare. It will ALWAYS be something you look forward to driving.

The conclusion for me is, I wont part with my CL now. I will add another car to the mix but the CL will stay with me. As it needs things, I will try to upgrade it.

As for another car in addition to the CL, my short list off the top of my head includes:
1. 2010 Acura TL SHAWD 6MT
- I think it is the successor to the CLS6. The SHAWD resolves the CL's achilles heal while enhancing every one of the CL's strengths.
- Have to wait for more depreciation though.
- On this list because I think I have to have it. It isnt as fast as the rest of the cars on my list. It would be a great family car but I couldnt live with it being automatic. The XLR8 exhaust and J pipe sound amazing.

2. G8 GXP 6MT

3. 1997+ Acura NSX 6MT

4. 2005+ Corvette Z06

5. 2005+ Viper GTS Coupe (2008 has VVT. Very rare. Very irresponsible)
- 1996-2000 GTS also very appealing.

6. 1993-1996 Porsche 993 (non turbo S model)

7. 2006+ BMW M5 6MT

8. Lexus ISF

9. Hyundai Genesis R Spec

I think all of the above could be purchased for under $40,000 now or soon. Probably not the Genesis.
