Why does nobody do the Plenum Upgrade?

I was looking at all the mods possible for our CLs and I found this Plenum upgrade

http://www.powerrevracing.com/store/...products_id=69

I know it's not a major gain, but it's certainly a unique one that many opt not to do, which only makes me want it more.

12 more tq and hp at lower rpms it definately a good thing since these cars power die after 6100rpms pretty much.

Anyways, I'm wondering why everyone avoids this mod, or do they simply not know it exists?

Cause they are expensive for what they are.
It requires a little work to get them on. It is a bolt on, but a little more involved then most want to get into.
I have them, but I can't confirm gains. I dyno'd the same before & after. idk if there was a dyno problem, or if my ecu jacked the gains, or what. I only have the pleniums, not their TB spacer.

Well is it better than doing the Unorthodox pulley set? doesn't that add 10ish hp ROUGHLY

Because those are the next 2 mods on my list.

I like working on the air coming in to make power, then i'll worry about the exhaust and headers.

You need to make the power before you can get you full bang out of the outtake.

either way between the pulleys, tb spacer, and plenums I gotta be adding 20..... Damn well better be

No, it is not better than doing the crank pulley. I did the plenums when I was had exhausted my other modification options.

Well if you didn't see gains, do you have headers, intake, and or pulleys?

Cause the web site I posted has their dyno there on the exact car i have but it had headers, pulleys, and ram intake.

I suppose those mods make the engine able to take in that much more air (enough so it filled the extra space with the same pressure/amount of air in the plenums). Cause without the right velocity, the amount of air won't be enough (any more than normal) to cause the gains, and by opening that manifold it now needs more velocity (air mass) to do its job proportionately.

this is why I think the tb spacer is a mussst!

Either way I have to do it as I know it will only help every other mod I throw on.

If you do it, don't forget to tune it. Im pretty sure their claims for gains were after tuning.

And x2 on it being too expensive.

headers should be your next upgrade if you're looking for more power. When's your car out of the paint shop?

tune it??? um.. how do I go about that?

I thought the car tunes itself (slightly)?

so i guess my best bet is to do the pulley set first... then headers and manifold (then tune it up)?

So the concencience is the manifold upgrade is really the worst one?

Ok so what would you guys do in my situation, consider the fact I'm TIGHT on cash... so

Pulley set is a must i think you'll all agree with ? and then what?? tb spacer and thennn??

i don't want to do exhaust cause it's the most pointless i've read on the type s.

which leaves me with - thermo spacers for tb and manifold
- plenum upgrade for manifold
- comptech headers
- ecu upgrade (is there any?)

whatever gives the most bang for the buck is where i'm looking if you would be so kind to direct me.

And the headers i wanna buy new next year so put those one the back burner for now (i want something to look forward to for next summer)

Thanks for your input ppl

Get the option racing crank pulley for under $30,
Get headers
Then get tires
After that you'll be happy

Your first step is to find out exactly how far you want to take this project, you could be wasting money if your not careful. And a tune in a must if you are serious about maxing out your gains. My car gained 17whp off a tune with an apexi neo ( a/f ratio controller) I only had intake/headers on at the time. Do some research on dyno tuning and you will realize the importance of it.

why not get the unorthodox pulley set? 3 pulleys must be better....

I may be tight on cash but w/e I buy is always premo.buy cheap buy twice. I've found out the hard way on my past car.

- with the exception of something like a pulley. lol

but i think 3 pulleys vs one main one .. must add like 50% more help no?
my modo is, go all out or don't go out at all.

for $30 you're method is better for $ vs gain tho....i just want all she can get.

About the tuning thing tho?
Is that a DIY or will I still need some assistance

The crank pulley itself provides the majority of gains...the other 2 pulleys account for 2-3hp. I would go with the $30 crank pulley, pretty good bang for the buck and people haven't had any issues with it.

Yup, get the underdrive crank pulley. I was about to order it (option one) but might go another direction with the car.

First and foremost finish up basic bolt-ons before you consider tuning. Then you will be getting a piggyback such as Apexi neo, Greddy e-manage or AEM FIC to adjust A/F ratios... You will need to find a tuner in your area put the car on dyno and let the tuner go to work adjusting A/F ratio.

Yeah, the final gains were with tuning on my apexi neo, but the plenums themselves did free up most of the power.

A lightened pulley set puts more strain on your engine from everyday use so its always a good idea to do a lot of research before investing in a set.
I think the best bang for buck power adder to the CL is your basic Intake/Headers/Exhaust route.
Instead of wasting money on the plenums why not just start saving and get the Comptech Supercharger? You can find them sometimes in the BM and theyre usually well priced too.

Not so on the CL/TL. This has been discussed.
Unless you have a lightweight flywheel on a 6 speed.

roger that... OK

so pulleys, manifold, tb spacer in a few months

then headers, and MAYBE exhaust next yr and then a wicked TUNE..

How much hp do you boys expect for the unorthodox pulley set? 8-10??

You dont really gain hp from the pulleys, you just free it up. They put less load on the crank thus allowing the engine to rev up faster. The lightweight pulley wont do any harm to the engine, as damn near all of Hondas engines are internally balanced. I run the Option pulley on mine. Just do a search on eBay. I got mine for less then $30. It was really easy to put on too. You will need new belts, so the total for it came to about $45.

My first upgrade was an Icebox and tb spacer and I didn't notice anything. The headers gave me the most power from my seat-of-the-pants dyno. I'd suggest getting those over anything else. Im judging by your screen name that you have an 01 CL, so you have a few more options for headers compared to us 6 speeders.

comptech are the only headers I'd put on my car.. and I don't want to boost it or anything. I'm not going to press my luck lol.

Bolt-ons and i am good to go.... damn so there really isn't a hell of a big point going the whole way for the extra doww.

Im not. Theres only one way to find out. Have someone tune the car prior to installing them and then doing it after. Im not about to spend the money to find out the answer.

But I was just letting the OP know that the gains posted by others were after a tune.

The plenum dyno was done on my car. As I said a few posts above, the plenums were the majority of the power, but the tune did squeeze out more power. If you dig up the original thread I am pretty sure I listed what the gains were before we touched the apexi. I can't remember the exact numbers off the top of my head.

At the time of the dyno I had: UR Ultra S pulley, Comptech Headers, Comptech Icebox, the Plenums and the Apexi Neo. (and a broken rear motor mount as seen in the video)

lol power dies after 6100? you're kidding, right? headers move the power band up when you install with the HP peak coming at 6600 versus 6100.............

i understand, i'm agreeing with some of you that there is no real dyno that's not skewed in any way. there should be a dyno with a 100% stock car, then another run after the plenums are installed, then another run with the tune.

i think if there was a dyno like that, it will produce a more accurate dyno sheet and we will know the truth on how much power they really produce.

many companies when they dyno their new product, they do not get a tune (especially NA). its like cheating the numbers IMO.

I have to question P2R's dyno as well. The thing dyno'd my car REALLY high. Higher then 2 different dyno jets I used in the past. Again it could have been just me on that day.

srrry *maimai I was just talking about the plenum upgrade (more specifically the dyno graph on the p2r plenums)

It gave more (max gains) pwr at earlier rpms. Great for daily driving.
