Who's using 5w-30 synthetic oil?

I use 5w-30 Mobil 1 in all my cars. I want to switch the '03 CLs to the same oil. Anyone else doing the same? Possible issues?

My next oil change is going to be synthetic.
If you want opinions, do a search, everyone on the forums for some reason dont recommend synthetic.

I got a hook up on oil changes, so might as well.

After the first 3000 miles on the car I switched to 5w-30 Mobil 1. I now have 87000 miles. Not one problem with the engine. If you plan to keep the car more than 100,000 miles or you are modified, synthetic is the only way to fly. There are many threads about this. Only the fools and those who keep there cars for less than 30,000 miles will knock the synthetics. Do a search, there are some excelent threads floating around.

THey don't sell 5w-20 at Costco, so 5w-30 is the next best thing. Thats what I use anyways, since Costco is relatively cheap.

Just had my oil and transmission fluid changed a half hour ago. My car has 156,000 miles and only Mobil 1 5w-30 has ever been put into the car. It was the first thing my dad did when he got the car from the dealership. Now that the car is mine I use Mobil 1 extended life oil that is good for up to 15,000 miles (even though I still change mine every 2-3K). You can pick the Mobil 1 oil and a filter pretty cheap at your local Walmart.

Even though you have a 6spd, for the automatic peeps I change myAcura transmission fluids every 15K-20K to keep things very smooth. My first transmission went at 100,000 and this second one (knock on wood) is still running strong.

I love Acuras and if you treat these cars well they really will last for a very long time.

Yes...

I don't use sync either... With the factory recommendation for 7500 miles on dyno oil, I don't find the need to spend extra money on sync..

I used to use mobil 1 on my last car tho'...

You did not mention the miles, but my professional wrench friends say that when switching over you may want to go to a partial syn oil first to let the engine seals adjust then if no leaks go to full syn the next change...

I use 5-30 mobil 1 in my acura and honda.....the 30w number is a plus in the heat over the 20w and most mfgs use the 20 to improve the MPG....

the key is change oil often....I also have a 1990 GMC Sub, with 335,000 miles on same engine all on plain old Quaker State...change it every 3000 miles-- Acura/honda every 5,000. .... You would not believe the horror stories I hear from my wrench friends of people that do not change oil regular or run low or no oil...

I don't want to launch a synthetic/non-synthetic debate here. I'm mainly interested in who has moved away from the factory fill and book recommended 5w-20, and why. My understanding is that Acura (and others) have gone to 5w-20 for slightly improved gas mileage. I can't imagine switching to 5w-30 is going to significanlty change the mpg or cause runability problems.

are you afraid to take it up to 25,000 miles as advertised?
I think Amsoil says its 25K/1yr for normal, or 15K/1yr severe driving.

Whats interesting, is that Mobil 1 EP says its 15K/1yr for normal or severe driving.
I actually emailed Mobil 1 customer support and asked them for clarification. And they told me that even if I mostly do severe driving, 15K should be still OK.

I currently have Mobil 1 EP and Mobil 1 EP oil filter, plan to change my oil at 10K/1yr. I already bought Amsoil for the next oil change

Yeah, now that's the way you do it

I just don't understand people who change sync oil @ 3K miles... I've always thought that the biggest benefit to sync was the longer drain interval...

When I had my old tbird and was driving 65 miles to work (one way) I needed an extended drain interval or else I'd have to change the oil every 4 weeks or so...

I use only Mobil 1 5W20 and OEM Honda Filter every 6,000 miles. My car is worth the extra expense imo.

I'm starting to get my answer. Most of us have ignored the book and have gone to a 5w-30 oil.
For those of you who are using synthetics and running longer drain intervals, keep in mind the oil filter life. Might want to consider changing out the filter at the half way point.

the book for 01 CLS says that 5w-30 is good. I think 02 and up they started recommending 5w-20, but the engine is still the same ... if u ask Acura, they will tell u that u can still use 5w-30... even though 5w-20 is recommended for 02+
About oil filter, thats why you get extended performance oil filter such as Amsoil or Mobil 1 which can hold up to the maximum drain interval. you need to buy a good filter for long drain intervals.

comrad

I still change at the 10k mark only because it's the break even point for me 3k petro to 10k syn..

Yes I sell Amsoil to my friends and naighbors,, therefore when I started testing my oil (when my cl was new) I used it to baseline what to tell people.,, I wanted a large safety buffer because they forget to change it and ususally go 12 -15k or one year,, I was making them come in (my home garage) for a filter change every 5k,, but now with the new sub-micron filters I can go 10-15k on the oil and filters.

I have a real job in the aeronutical engineering field and I use science to prove out claims,, Moble1 ED and Amsoil seem to always be on top of various independent SAE tests.

All who use syn need to do what they are personally comfortable with,,

Amsoil 0w30 $$8-9/qt
Amsoil sub-micon EO filter $$12-15

Mobil ED $$6-8/ qt
ED filter $$ 9-11

I don't use Mobil because they have been known to change there formulas,, well documented,, they also have been know to advertise changing syn every 3k,, you have to remember they have a 50 year supply of petro oil they need to sell

Amsoil make a living trying to get peaple to stop changing there oil so often..

For 2001 they recommended 5w-30. Then they switched to 5w-20 in 2002. However, as listed in the 2002 CL owner's manual, you can use 5w-30 if 5w-20 is not available.

They only went to 5w20 to up there corp EPA points,, it has nothing to do with any engineering change to the engine,, 5w30, 0w30, 10w30 all work just fine,,
