Top end of Six speed v Automatic

My 01 auto CLs has a very strong mid range but the top end acceleration leaves much to be desired. The fastest I've gone is 135 mph on an open stretch of road on the Sawgrass Expressway here in South Florida. There was more left but I came upon traffic up ahead.....

My son has an 03 stick CLs and it's top end is dramatically stronger and overall the manual Cls cars are very strong from 80 MPH plus.....We raced before he had the header install and ran neck and neck to the century mark but after that he was pulling away.

I've little doubt the stick CL's can hit 150 plus but was wondering about the auto's.....I'm thinking 140 plus max given a loooong stretch of empty road.

I hit just over 150mph racing an Audi TT with my old J35A3 CLS6..

Oakroadsteve, in your perpetual pursuit to increase the top end of your auto '01 CLS, compared to your son's current CLS6 bolted set-up and stay NA, you may have to drop in a J35A3.

If you don't want all the 'hassle/worry/expense' that comes with installing your S/C'er kit on the automatic, as they say 'there is no replacement for displacement' and it is NA worry free 'safer'.

If you find a low mile J35A3 (probably less than $500 locally), take either the heads in mass or just the cams from your J32, the connecting pipe and water jacket, the J35A3 can be dropped in 'plug n play' to your CLS ECU. All that's left is the choice in how you handle the 'labor'.

I believe I read somewhere both the Automatic and 6MT CLs were governed to something like 155 mph; the only difference it the 6MT cars will get to that speed quicker.

Thanks for the sage advice Dr. Z ...I hadn't thought of that and will do some research on the matter...I have to wonder though that the added stress on the tranny would be the same either way as I would run no more than 3 to 4 lbs with the SC which would translate to 25 to 30 ponies. My guess is the 3.5 conversion would yield similar output and stress on the AT.

Young Squag has been focused on his GTO and has placed assisting me with the SC addition as the last of his priorities unfortunately. I believe I mentioned that I have an 06 C6 Corvette manual which takes up some time but aside from the massive thrust of the vette, I've found my CL to be a better car overall and a more enjoyable ride especially here in our neck of the woods and all the traffic.

Squag might have viewed this item but he's more focused on adding some muscle to his GTO for the time being...I will enslave him in the matter of adding FI to my CLs once he's completed the steroid infusion on the Pontiac....My Type S runs and looks so sweet right now I can wait until he and his gear head associates are ready to devote some time to the Comptech install on my SMR 5 speed.

I hit 150 mph several times in my 2003 TL Type S auto (cold air intake, eibach suspension, ZR rated tires for 186+ mph speeds) on 4 lane empty highway on a LONG stretch.
I also hit 150 mph in my 2003 CL Type S 6MT (bone stock) driving through an Indian reservation in Montana.

Both were summer days (June and August), broad daylight, dry, straight and empty roads.

The CLS6 got there significantly faster. I redlined every gear on the TL and didn't need 6th on the CL.
