RASPY EXHAUST NOTE !!! Need suggestions...

OK, since I got the headers last week, my exhaust note has become VERY RASPY!!!
I don't like it!

I removed the premuffler right after I got the car(over a year ago)to get a deeper note, and for better flow. It used to be raspy at cold start ONLY! - once it warmed up a little (2-3 mins), it lost the raspy sound! But, now it STAYS raspy sounding, even AFTER warming up, and running hard. It sounds like SHIT around 2000-2500 RPM! BRRRAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!

I'm thinking it's the original mufflers that are making the shitty sound, because I've heard a car with the Comptech mufflers and headers, and it sounded SWEET! I just don't think they are worth the $$$.

I've been a fan of flow-masters for years, and have had them on a couple of V-8's - they sound nice too. I was thinking of replacing the stock mufflers with the flowmaster singles. ...I think I read that someone had done that here! They used the stock tips. My question is: Do I also have the muffler shop do larger tubing on the axle-back "Y" pipe???
Also, do you think that this will solve the raspiness????

Please reply with your input!

i have nothing much to say to help you out because i don't know what WOULD help except maybe get another aftermarket exhaust... but how did you take the premuffler out? did you just go to some muffler shop and ask them to take it out? if so how much did it cost you? thanx

The less back pressure you have the more raspy your car will sound. Try adding the silencer back on.

Seems like the logical first step is to put the pre-muffler back on since the rest of us have the headers with no problems at all.

Chris: Yes, I had a muffler shop cut it out and weld a straight pipe in it's place. It cost $30.

Type R: Yes, I bought the headers used, BUT they are only 2 months old! Originally shipped 4/14/01 to the guy I bought them from. So, they are NOT early production ones!

JZ: I really don't want to put the premuffer back on!

Spiro: If less back-pressure makes it sound raspy, then why DON'T hi-performance race cars that have straight flow thru exhausts (NO cat, or mufflers) sound raspy??? Why do all Flowmastered cars so so sweet? They have MINIMUM back pressure!

I used to "build" exhaust systems. You can generally get rid of a rasp with a very small resonator. If you can substitute a very small free flowing resonator in the location of the previous muffler, you will probably get rid of the higher harmonics (that is the rasp).

I used to run glass packs on the end of a 4-2-1 and 4-1 collector. I would run a 2.5 foot glass pack, and if the pipe exited right after the "muffler", there would be no noise. The minute I added more than a few feet of pipe (as in no side exit, but rear exit) I would get a nasty rasp that was terrible cold (sorry, I can only guess). I put a small resonator at the end of the pipe -- it sounded perfect and the rasp was gone. The "resonator" was only 12" long and was just a pipe with a ton of holes drilled in it with a surrounding can welded over it.

You could probably get some kind of similar mini-resonator to replace the stock unit, and it would kill the "rasp".

Just some thoughts that fixed a slightly different, yet similar problem.

Great input! ...Thanks!

Do you think that if I put the Comptech mufflers on (without the premuffler) it would still be raspy???

I think so. It would probably sound worse since the exhaust is a little more free flowing then stock.
