Radius Rod Bushings - STOP the wheel hop!

This was not my idea.
http://www.mckinneyraceworks.com/cat...products_id=32

Maybe it was typeR or distortedskool, don’t know.

But,
This is just damn genius!!!!
This may be the last chapter on wheel hop for the CL/TL. Who knows but I sure want to find out the hard way.

These Radius Rod bearings replace the Radius Rod Bushings for the Honda Prelude but should work on our car. They eliminate forward and rearward movement of the front wheels. Should improve ride if anything since there will be no more binding of the LCA. That thing is all bound up if you have ever tried to move it with the Knuckle off the car. Very hard to move! Under hard braking the wheels move back changing the alignment of the wheels and under acceleration the wheels can jump forward adding to wheel hop with the regular rubber bushings.

I just got off the phone with Walter Mckenny (owner of site at top). They sell the LCA bearing replacements for the bushings for the 2002 Accord which is a direct fit replacement for our car, TL or CL if someone where interested in that also.

I have cross referenced all the part numbers for the radius rod bearing parts between the two cars and all of the first 5 digits are the same.

The parts all look identical and Walter thinks they will fit and work fine. He said that he would work with me to make a part that would fit for sure and possibly use a larger bearing. Either way he will make this work if I send him measurements. I have already ordered a set from him and will install them once the MP90 supercharger is done. I don’t want to add to many issues at once. I should be doing the final tuning end of next week or early week after.

They would work for sure but you may have to shim the radius rod to achieve the correct caster which would not be difficult. I have done it before. It would just take a steel collar sized to the correct length. I talked with Walter about this and he said that just adding the bearings will increase caster slightly 1-3 degrees but would be same on both sides. More caster is a good thing and adds to high speed straight line stability. All the European cars run high caster on the front wheels. I would do significant R&D before putting the seal of approval on this, however.

What a great mod this could turn out to be! I bet it would altogether eliminate the wheel hop with our custom poly mounts (Thanks to distortedskool and the earlier guys who pioneered the idea). I will find out and or get us a product made with Walters help. What a nice cool guy!

If this doesn’t workout I can easily make some molds of the current bushings and mass produce the bushings in a 80A poly. Along with some Teflon impregnated Grease that should also do wonders for our cars if the bearings don’t work out.

Jim

If you want to see what the bearings or harder poly mounts will be eliminating just go stand in front of one of the front wheels while someone takes off very slowly engaging the clutch in first gear and watch it rock back and forth parallel to the ground. You will see the front wheels shift forward and backward about a 1/2-1/4" with the firing of the pistons. I see it everytime the alignment guy drives my car on the rack. Its always bothered me.

Id love to see him make one for our car.

The first five digits of the part number will be the same. It is the same category of part. I posted the breakdown of Honda part numbers in the motor mount thread.

The middle three are what vehicle they go in. Thats where the difference it. The last three are basically for revisions or who supplies them.

Usually replacing these just keeps the car from pulling to one side or the other under braking. I don't think it'll stop wheel hop under acceleration. Better option may be to look into having someone make some traction bars but I don't see that many people here with any real use for them.

I understand your thinking, but ONLY in conjunction with the solid poly filled OEM mounts, I think this will eliminate the hop. If you have ever torn into the front suspension or watched it under load you can see there is plenty of movement back and forth to cause hop. We will see. I will provide no BS with the results. I have the solid poly filled mounts, sport springs(H&R), and Tokico Shocks, I think this is the last peice of the puzzle since it is still not completely gone. We will See.

i know Johntypes had a chicago garage [that is now closed down] custom do something to his front suspension to eliminate wheel hop...i just dont know exactly what it was, so you might want to do research on his car, but he is a member here from 2001-2008, so see what you guys can find..,

good idea... i wanted to poly fill these, but a bearing will be even better. the movement of the front wheels was super obvious when i was on the dyno.

You cant poly fill them, they are solid rubber. If you were adventurous enough you could make molds and make some poly bushings, in which case you need to make some for us

Making a mold would be very easy to do for this part. That would be the easy route. If the bearings fail to work well or I just dont like them I will make some molds and make a bunch of bushings.

One project at a time... I have them in hand and they look like they will bolt right up. I am still putting the final wraps on the MP90. That should be done late next week.

Good suspension that you can adjust the Both Dampening and Rebound will eliminate most of it. (got rid of 97% of mine) I still have stock mounts, but plan on poly filling mine when i build the motor this winter.

Im not sure if this mod will get rid of wheel hope or not but its worth a try. I think a mold and poly mounts would be easiest.

About 1k after I replaced everything but the bushings (Firm Koni yellows & CT springs Neuspeed sway, Moog endlinks, new balljoints) I got a clunk when I stop. I have checked everything and all that is left are these rubber bushings.

I don't really have wheel hop (that I am aware of) but I need to replace these and if there is a better alternative why buy OEM?

The link & the site are dead now.

Okay, I've not looked in to all the details, but since you mentioned dropping the clutch, does that mean this applies only to 6spds?

By the way, if you want to hold off making your own . . . I can check in to how much the new motor mount vendor will make one for you/us. Just let me know.

So...What suspension are you running in that video? And you have stock engine mounts? That looks good.

I dont see myself doing the radius rod bushings. I will probably send them back to the guy I bought them from. I am overwhelmed with the supercharger as it is.

First that wasnt even intended for this thread. It was to keep the kids in the TL section happy for the weekend while i was gone. 2nd i was holding the steering wheel and camera with one hand. (it was still accelerating hard while doing that) If i handnt been messing around i would have used much better throttle control (not that there is much hope for not much wheel spin on a hard launch in that thing) If i shifted earlier it would have bogged low rpm in 2nd and wouldnt have looked as good for the camera.
