Poor gas mileage in wife's car -- need ideas
Since this is 'car talk', I thought I'd ask for help here.
I bought my wife's '01 Olds. Alero GLS last December. It has only 9000 miles on it currently, and it's mostly driven in the city, to and from her work. It's about 7 miles one way. There are a few stop lights...
I filled the car up last night for her, and I calculated 14.9 mpg for that particular tank of gas!!! I was driving it prior and it was never doing well in the mileage department, but this was back at 1000, 2000 miles. I'd consider a car with 10,000 miles "broken in".
I took it into the Olds. dealer back at 3000 miles for the oil change and I had them check things out. Personally, thos people over there are as useless as tits on a bull, and I have no faith in their diagnosing of anything. They came up with nothing.
This car has never done well, regardless of season. Tires have always been properly inflated.
What, if anything should thesse guys be looking for? The car is supposed to be getting 21 mpg in the city. I don't consider 15 mpg (consistently) even close!!! She doesn't drive hard...
Ideas???
Thanks!

Are you sure its supposed to get 21mpg in the city? That seems pretty high. Short trips are a killer to the gas mileage average. I would expect anywhere between 14-17 mpg in the city short trip driving.
