Overheating at Idle: Please Help.

Hey all,

ive researched here trying to diagnose a overheat at idle problem. Fuses/relays seem good by visual inspection. Condenser fan comes on with a/c but cooling fan does not at operating temp. I added some coolant recently since problem surfaced a week ago, and that seems to have helped a lot. But fan not coming on. I’ve bought a new thermostat to replace to see if that’s the issues. Would the coolant temp sensor throw a code if it was bad or should I replace too? Or maybe it’s just a bad cooling fan??

What are you driving? I only ask because the AT has more bells and whistles in this regard than my '03 cl-s 6MT. I would first check to see that your fan motor works. You can do this by using a pair of those itty bitty jumper cables from the battery to the fan motor. It should turn on. Then check all radiator, Idle Air Control Valve (IACV) and A/C system wires/connectors and coolant hoses for signs of damage or coolant leaks. Last, check out the IACV itself and it's gasket. They tend to get clogged up over time and need to be cleaned. The IACV is located on the underside of the throttle body. I am sure there is more, especially with the AT, but this is a good start I think.

you can also pull the pigtail going to the fan and check for voltage. That's at least one way to test to make sure the fan is at least getting a current so its one less thing to narrow down. Also Why is it that our thermostat is set so low. I bought a replacement one from Orielly's and it was set to 170 degrees, maybe I got the wrong one?? ha ha ha not sure.
