Just wrecked my CL-S -- possible total

Coming home this morning and cruising at about 70 with sparse traffic. 2 vehicles in the middle lane & I'm approaching in the right lane. All of a sudden, minivan in lead decides to switch lanes -- I slam my brakes on and my car goes SIDEWAYS with skid marks on the highway. I ended up hitting the concrete embankment (it was an elevated freeway) and airbags deployed, etc. I was kinda surprise by the lack of control I had on the car -- I figured that:
1. Brakes wouldn't lock
2. My Legend never went sideways with heavy braking
3. Was does VSX do again?
4. Dammit, looks like I lost my car
5. And that Jackass didn't even stop!
(I don't think he even knows what happen.)

Anyway, car looks pretty bad so I guess we'll see what happens. Plus it was on lease. --Satya

Well, the car can be replaced....cruising at 70mph and hitting a concrete embankment- your lucky to be able to post your experience on the same day the accident happened.

Enjoy today.

There might be something wrong with ya car... I've had to slam the brakes at that speed twice now. The brakes did not lock and the car stayed straight.

One time on a police chase video on tv, i saw this SL500 running from a cop at 100+ and when it hit the brakes and turned it was going sideways forever atleast 1/8 of a mile or more and then he hit a wall or something, but he just walked out of the car like nothing.

Sorry to hear about your loss but, kinds sound strange that the car skid sideways.

Im glad to hear your ok but it really pisses me off when people fly down the right lane and pass everyone especially when the left lane is open (you said sparse traffic and 2 cars in middle lane). Right lane isnt for passing and if you had to hit the brakes hard enough to make you slide then you were going way too fast, so the van wasnt expecting you im sure. Use the correct lane and you wont have these problems. Sorry but i just really hate when people do this. Hope everything works out for you though.

VSA, ESP (M-B), and TCS (BMW) all work the same way. They use yaw rate sensors (to determine front wheel understeer or rear wheel oversteer), wheel speed sensors, lateral acceleration sensors (how hard the car is cornering), and steering angle sensors (determines the degree of the turn) to compare the driver’s intentions versus the cars actions. If there's a discrepancy between the two, the system applies the brakes and throttles back the engine to prevent losing control of the car. The systems have limitations though. If the car is sliding sideways at 50MPH, or the driver is sawing the steering wheel back and forth in an attempt to regain control, the system can no longer determine what the driver is trying to do and basically shuts down until normal inputs it can decipher are received again.

These systems and all wheel drive give drivers a false sense of confidence. In reality, nothing has changed and the laws of physics still prevail. If you hit a freeway off ramp too hot, VSA is a great aid for preventing loss of control. It also works well if you hit gravel, rain, or snow unexpectedly in the middle of a turn. Once the car is out of control though, it doesn’t help a heck of a lot. Similarly, all wheel drive is great in low traction situations up to about 15MPH. It does nothing at 45MPH if you lose control of your car on black ice. The problem is people begin to drive less carefully thinking these systems will perform miracles. As eyeguy can attest, they can only do so much.

This person saved a total of 2 1/2 minutes cutting all the "y's" and "o's" from the word "you" in this sentence! Too bad it makes them sound like a complete turd.

Thanks for the responses. For the guy asking why I was in the right lane -- I could see my exit in 1/4 mile -- which pisses me off even more. I think that I impacted the barrier at around 30 mpg. Got the initial estimate of about 10-11k which includes 4k for the airbags. The body shop doesn't think there is any engine or transmission damage. Will post pics to website soon. (They may look scary.)

Another question -- since it looks like they will be doing some extensive surgery -- this may also be an opportunity for new stuff like wheels and tires -- any suggestions?

Well, since the car is leased, I'll keep it through the lease period (March 2003). Then, we'll see about what comes next. Initially, I planned on purchasing my car after the lease but not now. So perhaps a used 2001 M3 convert then, maybe?
