Exclamation J35A4/J32A2 swap being done....

So after buying my block, I ended up with the J35A4.....this is good news, because I thought I had purchased the J35A1 making it an 01' Odyssey block. So since this is the A4, that makes it the 02-04 Odyssey block, correct?

So my question is, I been hearing that I wouldnt have valve clearance issues with this block and the J32A2 head. But then I also heard I had to get my pistons machined so that I would have valve clearance, so which is it? I really don't want the 05' RL pistons, because I'm not looking forward to having a 11:1 CR with a 125 shot of nitrous. So my question is this, what pistons did you J35A4 swappers use?

ThinJim...have you been on lately? Haven't heard a response from you lately. My block is here, and I'm ready to take it to the shop. My head is waiting for me there.

Cliff notes:
Bought J35A4 block(Odyssey) and J32A2 head (CLS).......dilema, not sure what pistons to go for....

a head shop should be able to calculate it for you...but ill say this...you will need a bracket that is used on the oddessey to mount the alternator or AC cant remember which

I already mentioned it:

Here is the pic showing J32A2 (CL-S/TL-S) intake/exhaust valves difference.
The largest is the intake valve measured at 36mm vs 30mm exhaust.

And here is the pic showing the difference between 3.5 pistons

Left to right:
'05 Acura RL, '02-04 Honda Odyssey, 03-04 Acura MDX

And since MDX piston is exactly the same as Odyssey, let's stick to Odyssey.

This is the documented proof showing '05 RL pistons (11:1 CR) are perfect fit for large CL-S/TL-S 36mm intake valves when installing type S heads on 3.5L block whereas '02-04 Odyssey pistons need metal removal for required valve clearance.

BTW, with my upcoming 3.5 (next week) I chose S2K injectors that fit right in on fuel rail. Here is the pics showing (left to right) Honda S2K (360cc) vs CL-S injector, the only difference CL-S injector has this green cap and S2K does not. Not an issue

In addition, I used this POLYURETHANE to improve stock motor mounts
$5 + labor = priceless.

And Vortech SFMU or FPR (fuel pressure regulator) will be used instead of Comptech FRP on my blower with low FP and better adjustability Keep in mind large injectors ^.

Bottom line:

3.5L swap
'03 CL-S block
'02 Odyssey crank/rods/bearings
'05 RL pistons/rings

remaining 3.2L heads + goodies
'03 CL-S heads
Scalbert's IC + CT SC (7psi) + e-manage
Dr. Evil transmission

great post BTW
why S2K injectors? are they larger? also why is it nessecary to remove material from the MDX/oddessey pistons for valve clearance?oh ya what do the CL-S pistons look like

S2K flow 360cc vs ~270cc CL-S injectors. With this and more adjustable Vortech SFMU, FP wont' be that high (see chart) along with injector duty cycle at expected 7psi on CT blower with 11:1 CR '05 RL pistons.

With J32A2 heads on J35 block of your choice leaving MDX or Odyssey pistons untouched and J32 valves will be bent (not enough valve clearance - see above), thus they need to be modified. '05 RL piston fits right in with no modification needed but at higher CR 11:1 vs 10:1. Still not a bad choice with right tuning. CL-S piston look similar to RL.

I think the compression would be too high.

I see no reason why it wouldn't.

Think about it:

If the automatic fits the J32A2 and the 6-Speed fits the J32A2 with no changes needed to the block.

The automatic fits the J35A4 so...

man...I know I'm getting obnoxious with all the same questions over and over from thread to thread. And I just want to thank you guys again for all your help. I just really like doing my homework before starting on my projects so that things go smoothly. I've had the answers before, but just wanted to confirm them over and over. But by doing so, I ended up finding new answers, lol, which threw me off.

Again thank you for your help guys. Having the butterflies like a mofo right now. Hopefully one more month and this should be done. My car's been done since April !!!

I see a reason. Every time someone asks about swapping from an auto to a manual tranny, they are told it will be far too costly. What I don't understand is... why would it be so costly if it just bolts right up to same engine? Something must be wrong, or many mny people must be confused.

This would be true if the J32A2 and the J35A4 used the same 5 speed automatic transmission... I'm researching stuff now and I'll let you know what I find.

Its almost like saying that both the 4 speed automatic and the 5 speed manual fit on the F23 engine, and the 4 speed auto fits on the J30A1 so... the 5 speed will too! haha I wish...

If will fit Cocoa, it will fit. The pics you sent me confirm it. Your block will be fine with the 6 spd. Study the pics I sent you and rest well.

the reason why it's soo costly, is getting all the lil things to make it work, and on top of that, the 6 speed is like find a needle in a hay stack. right now the best i can do, is find it for 2200.

It's not the mechanical aspect of that swap... it's the electrical and ECU conversion required.

The transmissions in the Odessy and MDX are nearly identical to those found in the CL.

and i would assume that the transmission of the ridgeline would be as similar, which is why im looking at it's 1,2,4th gear and final drive and have not given up on the diff from the 6mt fitting either as the half shafts carry the same part number,i dont think it could be too far off

BTW, RC confirmed 360cc for 2.0L, these however come from 2.2L so who knows maybe even more flow since honda list them as different part #.

Yep, fits right in

Thus there are 4 options:

1. 9.0:1 (custom)
2. 10.0:1 (Odyssey/MDX) with required J32 valve clearance
3. 10.5:1 (CL-S)
4. 11.0:1 (RL)

go with the 10.5:1 cocao. You'll get about teh same power and you can knock it down to a 100 shot instead of 125.. meaning more usage per bottle, and more power when not using the bottle.

Won't the increased stroke on the 3.5L crank and rods increase the compression ratio on those 10.5:1 CL-S pistons that were originally designed for a 3.2L application?

Compression test should get an idea, but I don't think it should increase that much if at all. I'll know mine soon.

No, it shouldn't. the 3.5 rods are are shorter by about 7mm and should keep the piston in a position similar to the 3.2 at tdc. If there are any variances, it would be negligible.

Thanks for the info

A 3.5L will most likely never be in my future, however I'm beginning to put the plans together for my winter project
