I thought the trannies that where replaced after 2005 where fine!!

When acura replaced my tranny for the 2nd time in 2005 they said it was a new design and I will nat have any problems like my previous two trannies.
Well today driving to work all my LIGHTS came on!
I ran the code and this is what I came up with:
P0740 Torque converter clutch solenoid circuit ..
I changed the fluid 3 times in the 70K i had this tranny and did not use SS or abuse her at all I took it easy on this tranny and its throwing codes!
The car shifts and drives fine , It does not feel like my previouse 2 trannies did before they went dead but I do hev a tranny code!
I am soo pissed I put so much money into this car in the last year and if my trannies is gonna go I will be soo pissed..
Anyone get this Solenoid Circuit code and where should I start to look in order to fix it?

From what I've read, none of them are safe. The changes made later on didn't change the fact that it was a design flaw. Think they just lubricate better which wasn't the big issue.

Too bad TransGo doesn't make a shift kit for them. The TransGo kit I got for a previous car was great. All kinds of transmission issues. Install it ($34 for the kit) by drilling a couple holes and using a couple new springs and stuff. Increased lubrication by several hundred percent and made for rock solid shifts at WOT.

Hearing about constant tranny problems with these is making me consider trading for a Lexus.

How about just getting a 6-speed instead? More power to the ground, no tranny issues, more fun to drive, better gas mileage, and more. Or just get an Acura without the autotragic tranny.

Is it possible to get a newer style auto-tranny, like from an 05 TL? Are there any that would fit?

Car is still in the parent's name and they don't want me to have a manual, plus I suck at driving them.

You'll never get better at driving a manual unless you keep practicing.

WE all know that the 6-speed is better the auto WE KNOW..
Unfortunetly when I bought this car in 2000 it only came in auto..
What I am tring to get accomplished with this thread is to know if anyone pulled that code P0740 and DID NOT have to replace the whole tranny!?!?

It say Torque converter clutch solenoid circuit , so can it be just a switch or something inexpensive?

I would have never though the tranny would go with the way I took care of it. I did 2 transmission flushes at the DRL , one when the tranny had 20k and the second at 40K also at the dlr, I belive they do a 3 X 1.. then when the tranny had 60K like 9 months ago I did a 3 x 2 so i switched out 6 quarts of the fluid and the fluid is Fresh looks and smells like it just came outta the bottle and I never used ss mode or abused her like i did the first 2 trannies!
And the first 2 trannies i got replaced I felt symptoms way B4 the lights came on and now no symptons or grinding and the lights came on WTF?

This baffles me, If i abused her and never changed the fluid I would not be as pissed/upset/baffled as I am now but I did everything B4 it need to be done and took it easy on this trans!

I cant belive a Rebuilt supposidly FIXED tranny would only go 68K before having to be replaced after all the maintence I have done to it!

Might be a sensor.
TheWeez
The auto is an electronic controlled trans. Those trans go kits are made mostly for mechanically controlled transmissions.
They do make a few for electronic but mostly for American V8 Fords a GM's.

Well my car was driving fine for a day with the code! On the way to work 2day it started going crazy Bucking downshifting upshifting and all this bullshit.
I can't belive a auto tranny cant get 70k without blowing up. I switched the fluid every 20k miles.. I did it at the DLR at 20 and 40K and i did a 3x2 at 60K, and I never used SS mode and did not beat up on it at all!

Do we know if the auto trannies were all assembled at the same plant on the same line? Could be a thought if there was a 'good' line and a 'bad' line. Would be interesting to compare SN#.

When they replaced this last tranny in June of 05 they told me that the clutch packs where bigger or some BS like that and that the trannies that where build in 05 which meant the tranny I was getting did not have a Jet whatever stuck in the ATF hole cuz the tranny was a new design and was gonna last a LONG time...well if they consider less then 70K a LONG TIME then i dont wanna know what a short time would be..

I would not own this car w/o a warrenty cuz like I said this tranny was installed late 05 and was suppose to be a redone (BETTER) trannies then the originals and was SUPPOSE to last.. I took VERY good care of it and changed the fluid with honda atfZ1 every 15-20k miles and it gave me no signs of going nuttin!! and out of no where on my way to the DLR from 60mph it downshifed like 2 gears to 30Mph and started jerking/grinding out of no where!

Yeah I really dont understand how some keep failing and then some last...
I do admit my first tranny was abused and that one lasted 30K but after that I didnt abuse the tranny/car anymore. I really though I would get 100K + from the last tranny they put in since it was redesigned and still pampered it ..OH well...

Right now im waiting to hear back from ACURA corperate they should get back to me b4 3pm tommorrow and if they dont split it 50/50 w/me im gonna get it rebuilt by someplace that will warrenty there rebuild or hopeing I can find a place near me that specializes in this tranny and did something to it during there own re-build that will strenthen it.. I went on a website ATRA..and e-mailed like 5 places that are near my car so i can hopefully drive it there..

What is ATRA?
Founded in 1954, the Automatic Transmission Rebuilders Association (ATRA) is an international trade association for the professional automatic transmission repair industry.

Does anyone know a tranny shop in NORTH NJ that specializes in this transmission and can do a GREAT job rebuilding it, hopefully a better job then ACURA can do..

A part of me does not wanna do it at the dlr even if they split the bill cuz the failed me 3 times what is gonna make it different this time?

Yeah so Acura is not helping me $4100 for another tranny that might go 70K if i baby it.
I am getting it done by a rebuilder in Clifton NJ .

World Automotive Transmission II
453-455 Van Houten Ave
Passaic, NJ 07055-2068
County: Passaic
Phone: (973) 471-5505

I called like 5 places i got off the atra site (Automatic Transmission Rebuilders Association) and they said it would be $2500-$3500 to rebuild this trans.
Most went by acura specs but some used upgraded parts and some had no clue what they where talking about , most only offered 12/12 warrenty on parts and labor.

I did not choose the cheapest on , I chose the guy I thought knew what he was talking about and rebuilt alot of odessey/TL/CL transes and he is giving me 3/36 warrenty parts and labor for $3143.50.

He uses Amsoil synthetic fluid and is installing a external trans cooler and Sonnax "O" ring end plug kit and a few other UPGRADES to keep this trans going.

It will be done friday the earliest and monday the latest so I will let u guys know how it went!

Well, he gave me a shot on the SHO this past weekend and I did great. Only bucked it once, and never stalled it. I think I'm finally getting the hang of it.

My tranny will be done by tuesday is anyone cares!
I visit the shop today to drop off my tranny filter i had laying around and AMSOIL ATF and he had 3 cars on the lift will trannies torn out, a 2001? honday oddessey 5 speed tranny a 2002 acura MDX 5 speed tranny and my car so they rebuilt 2 of this same tranny b4 mine!! The 2 other were not the upgraded trannies though and had the Jet kit the guy rebuilding it said the 2nd gear was a little bigger in my tranny to let fluid flow but not by much.. All the tranny rebuilders I called all said this car need a ATF cooler.
he said the all 3 TQ where fried purple in coler.. so sad honda released a 5 speed tranny that could not last 60k miles!

^ slightly off topic but your sig says not to buy a 5-speed Acura transmission. I know that the Acura autos are 5-speed but usually the term 5 speed is interchangeable with the word standard so... though I see what you mean, it might be a little confusing and say the opposite of what you wanted to say...

I mean the 5 speed auto...

The reason I said 5 speed is cuz they used a 4 speed auto till 2000 and 2000 until 2005 there 5 speed auto are horrible designed transmissions..
Not only the CL/TL/MDX but the accord and oddessey also..
Do a search and u will find at least 50% failed b4 50K miles and that number is generous...

I mean automatic the reason i said 5 speed cuz the 4 speed trannies where ok.

There have been people that went through 3 or 4 in the first 100K miles on here...
I am going on my 4th tranny after maintaining it with a ATF fluid flush every 20K.

People that bought these cars used have no clue how many trannies they went through b4 the car was bought.. from 2000-2005 the trannies went 20-30K if u where lucky now with the UPGRADE they did in 2005 you can get 60-70K out of the tranny if u maintain it!

4 speeds were not ok, they just did not fail at the rate ours did.

My 97 3.0 CL started having problems about 10k and died at 32k.

As to the way the transmission was treated 95% of the miles were put on by my Wife in seven years (total failure at 32k in 2004) she drives like she has nowhere to go and we serviced the car at Acura per their schedule.

These transmissions were not properly designed, Acura DECIDED it was cheaper to repair the ones that broke then to redesign/recall the transmission.

Go here:
http://owners.acura.com/Landing.aspx

Create a profile with your VIN click on service & maintenance on top, click on recalls on the left.

Mine shows this:
Your 2001 Acura is included in the 2000-03 TRANS WARRANTY EXT Campaign.
Description 2000-03 TRANS WARRANTY EXT
Date 09/27/2002
Type Recall Customer Letter
Status Open

I believe that is the oiljet bandaid that it avoided by lasting until the end of 05

I don't think you can tell how many times the tranny was actully replaced..
Unless you did it at the same DLR then they would have record of it.
I did my first one at Park Ave Acura and second one at OPen Road Acura and as per open road acura i only had the tranny changed once cuz they can not see that it was changed at Park Ave Acura..
Acura should have it all linked together so you can see how many trannies and what was done to each But I think they like it better this way cuz no one can really tell how many of these trannies where actully replaced so they can spin the numbers so it does not look as bad as it really is!
