Mine is pretty close right now..I will fill it up when the light goes on and tell you exactly how many it is (by subtracting that total from 17.2 gallons.. our tank's capacity)

Another good question is what was the most gas you've ever used?
I put in 16.2 gallons a couple of weeks ago. Made me EXTREMELY nervous while going up a big hill and the car started sputtering.
Needless to say I went directly to the gas station.

Am I the only one who never ever lets his tank get below 1/3? If I'm really, really busy, I'll let it go to 1/4... but thats when I start to get nervous. It can't be bad for the car to not let the tank go below 1/3.

It's not very goo dfor the car to run with a near empty tank, just think what might happen on the inside of the tank on cool mornings sometimes...(condesation)....

Maybe I'm insane, but I have always ran my tank dry ever since I started driving, never had a problem. Could be because so far the only cars I ever owned were econo-boxes with tiny gas tanks. My Neon had an 11.8 gallon tank, I once put 11.9 gallons in. I once ran out of gas as I pulled into the station in my '85 New Yorker - that was pretty cool. I wish that someone would just build a car with an "honest" needle. I want the red line, peg, or whatever your car happens to have at "E" to be "honest-to-God empty and I MEAN IT!!". Is this too much to ask? If they took the guesswork out of how much gas you had in the tank I would fill up at maybe 1/8 tank or so...

Agreed. My low fuel light comes on and the car usually takes about 14 gallons or $733.43 worth of gas ... (Northern California gas prices suck ).

All of the car's I've had do this:

They make the fuel gauge's 1/2 mark not equal to the 1/2 of the total gas volume.

The needle pointing at the 1/2 mark in the CL-S fuel gauge == 7 gallons remaining.

Anyone ever had a fuel gauge that was accurate?

I had a car once - I think it was my '89 VW Golf that had an accurate needle. The second it hit E - the engine stalled. It took some getting used to since all my life I viewed E as almost empty. Ran out of gas more in that car than any other.

With regards to running it down, if you admit that some condensation and gunk ends up in the bottom of the tank then leaving it there is better than pushing it through the pump and injectors - on the other side, if you run it dry from the start of ownership, then this would be small amounts and would keep the tank relatively clean...

Jens - any comments?

I usually drive with the fuel light on for about 30 miles or so and I have never put more than 13.5-14 gallons inn it. I think it's very conservative.

That’s a moot point because the fuel pump is mounted and draws from the bottom of the tank.
Any heavy dirt particles in the tank would be “ingested” even on a full tank.
That’s what fuel filters are for.

3 gallons seems to be the norm on most cars. Figure that they usually leave you enough gas to go about 60 miles once the light pops up. That's about the farthest distance between gas stations on major high/freeways.

ours is about 3 gallons. The most thats been put in my car was 15.6 on my way from san fran. But i didn't know the light was on cause i wasn't driving. I usually fill up with about a 1/4 of a tank in, putting in an avg. of about 10-11 gallons. Have you ever seen whats at the bottom of your tank? not something you want in your car

I usually let it go to 1/4 when I'm just in town. When I'm highway traveling, I fill up at 1/2. Works out pretty well.

any grunge that collects in you feul tank would get suched into the engine unless in floated on top of the gass because if feul intake from the tank was on the top you car would stall pretty soon after filling up so the feul intake fron the tank has to be near the bottom so that anything that settles in the tank will get sucked in but this is why there are things called feul filters
