Honda Acura brake fluid shelf life

Does anyone know what is the shelf life of Honda Acura type 3 brake fluid.

1. For a closed plastic container, where the cap and seal have never been opened.

2. For a container that has been opened before.

Thank you

Unopened: 2-5 years. ie. 5 years - Calif.

Opened: Discard after one year or less. Depending on how good the seal is.

^agreed, if un-opened, you can use it.

if its opened, toss it out!!!

brake fluid is hygroscopic, which means it absorbs moisture from the atmosphere. and you dont want water in your brake lines because it can cause rust internally

Brake fluid

The brake fluid containers are new. I believe it is approximately four years old. The containers seemed to be sucked in and in a crumpled form. thanks.

Plastic still leaks air with time even if sealed.

Brake fluid is cheap. I'd just go to the store and buy fresh stuff. And always throw the remainder away. Get a new one each time.

Sounds like they leaked. Toss them. Honda fluid is $7 on ebay.

When the container is sucked in that means it's still sealing. As the temperature drops so too will the pressure in the container. Hence the sucked in and crumpled container. If the container is leaking then the pressure inside the container will be same as atmosphere pressure. In that cast the the container wouldn't be disfigured. It will be normal... Roundish.

I just got a bottle of HG DOT3 brake fluid from Heeltoe and there's an SLW16 10 06 number stamped on the label. Did they send me expired brake fluid?

Might be the manf date, as brake fluid doesn't 'expire' until it's exposed to moisture for some time, so it's impossible to give an expiration date.

You're right it doesn't expire exactly, but it does have a shelf life of 5 years (I've heard up to 10 but why risk it). Since the "date" stamp has an "SLW" next to it, I wonder if that stands for "shelf life something" which might mean this bottle is past its shelf life and shouldn't be used.

If it's genuine Honda BF and came from a sealed bottle I'd use 10 year old BF. But you should ask the seller what that number really means if you're worried.
