help: Hard Water Spots/Tree saps spots on the windshield?

Please, I know this thread should be in the detailing forum. However, I need real help here!...

How in the word do you clean your windshield from Hard Water Spots/Tree saps spots?

I can't see for dime at night, all what I see is water spots on 70% of the windshield. the water spots changes the opacity of the windshield and greatly reduces the visibility at night.

I Tired the following with NO success:

1) Windshield Invisible from Stoner: NO success.
2) Red Vinegar: NO success.
3) Windex: NO success.
4) Windex Wipes: NO success.
5) Goo Gone Pro-Quality Gel Spray: NO success.

Please help, if you ever had this problem, how do you clean/polish the windshield?

Thanks, real thanks for your help.

It is clearly that the windshield is etched by hard water spots

I have 3 things to try:
1) Raix-X
2) Claybar
3) Pro-Glass Polisher compound and high speed buffer.

I will try 1) first.

Nashua,

I had this on my brand new CL-S. I tried vinegar, mild abrasives, and even toothpaste (hey, it worked on the side view mirrors). I took it to the dealer and they tried to buff it out with an abrasive.

Finally, the dealer paid for me to take it to the place that tinted my car. It cost about $100. All they did was take a mixture of water and acid, slowly adding acid until they got the desired results. The water spots are now 100% gone.

Rain-X won't do shit and the Buffer is for light scratches.

If you have tried a clay bar w/o success....I would use 00000 grade (don't remember how many "0"s ) steel wool on your windows with glass cleaner as a lubricant. I've read about this technique @ Autopia and maybe people have had great success.

nashua..... like gator said... any glass polish.

first try toothpaste... that usually works. if not... you prolly have some 3M #39009 lying around. That works on GLASS too... i use it all the time on my windshield.

if not get a glass polish from Griots or Zaino... both can be used by hand and work great.

otherwise... get a hard abrasive with a buffer.

39009 always works for me tho, i park outdoors under trees and my windshield gets lots of stains and deposits.

razor blade for the tree sap. no touch glass stripper and some elbow grease for the water spots.

if they're really bad you might try the no touch w/ some #0000 steel wool

Let me be a bit more specific:

After I cleaned the windshield, in the day the windshield looks queak clean.

However, at night when it is raining, and even after using the wipers all what I see is the water spots.

Basically, the water beeds around the water spots, and the water get stuck to the hard water spots making the visibilty at night sucks...

I applied some Rain-X, and I will see if this helps.

If not, I will order some Griot Glass Polisher and try again.

One question, Does not this steel wool scratch the windshield? I hate to see swril marks all over the windshield!!

for a quick solution, try rubbing alcohol...

if that doesn't work, soak your hands in the remaining rubbing alcohol, and light it on fire. That always good for a laugh.

yea you have to get high proof rubbing alchohol tho, or high acid white vinegar.

when you buy silicone wipers they give you a pad with like 90% alchohol that strips the window CLEAN.

rainx will just make it worse.

Be careful with CLR. I am a chemist, and CLR should work. But that stuff is basically PHOSPHORIC ACID, and it could do a number on your paint. You have mineral deposits on your windshield, and CLR should rid you of those. I would wet the entire car down after a good washing, and apply CLR to the windshield only, and then flush the hell out of it with water.

Thanks for you all. If the rain-x is not helping, I will try CLR, and I will do what dfrefder said, flush well with a lot of water.

Nashua.

I got Clay Magic' Clay bar for $10. I will give ir a try. The sienna hood's paint is suffering from bug/acid eating the paint!

It needs to be clayed and some powered buffing!

Clay won't take off anything baked in...some asshole poured something sweet and sticky onto my car the other night.. that shit dried on....I did everything....clay, dawn wash, simple green...I just picked up some tree sap and bug remover stuff from Kragen...it works. Just a little elbow grease and a clean microfiber.

Nashua, listen to me. get some of this stuff. then go get some steel wool fine enough for glass, it's #0000 or something. use the stripper w/ the steel wool and water. if that doesn't take the spots off, your glass is etched.

http://shop.store.yahoo.com/rodi/notgs8.html

you can try the stripper w/ just a rag, but you'll have to rub until your arm falls off.

I have hard water here and I always get water spots. I use something like CLR and I only use it before I wash my car. It still takes some rubbing tho. but it does work. just make sure your car is wet and hose everything down good when your done. some times, after its dry, I'll see some more and do it over again. just clay barred my car too!

From washing your car with hard water or water with a lot of minerals in it.
