have you heard of cl's getting stolen?

Just bought a 2003 acura cl type s (manual). And yes I am loving it, however, i do have some regards because the car I had before- rsx type s was stolen in broad daylight with a clutch lock on . Just wondering if anyone has had any issues with theft, and also would like to know what you use to protect your car. I live in Oakland, CA and theft is a big issue, thinking about a lojack, but is that even worth it?

Thanks for your time,
Lindsay

im more worried about someone stealing what i have inside my car rather than my car itself. the immobilizer gives me a little piece of mind. but then again i dont have tinted windows and my interior looks like an old person drives it. i worry more about getting more stupid dings in my door now.

oh yeah i hear lojack sucks. but thats what i hear on the grapevine and not from experience. one of my friends had lojack on her integra and it got jacked. by the time they got there the thieves were already gone. they only drove it 5 miles away from where they stole it. but thats just what i heard.

With all the stuff I did to my car I was never worried. It was always parked in the garage. My windows had 10% reflective tint on the sides and 5% limo tint on the rear (covered the entire window including the dot matrix). No one could ever see through my windows.

I've heard of a few over the years. But the car doesn't attract that sort of thing.

Face it, the CL isn't a popular car.

Exactly.

I'd be more worried about what is in it.

get a lojack. if its stolen u will know where it is, then go their and fuck them up or call the cops. invest in one of those or get a better alarm that notifies u when someone touches ur car. park under street lights or where the car is highly visible. i got a camera pointed on my drive way, so i know know who takes my tl or cl. another thing u can do is insure any expensive parts u have in or on your cl. im gonna insure my cf hood and trunk (when i get it) and all other parts.

Have you ever gotten a quote for insuring the parts on the car? When I did that it made me sick.

OP- Just be smart about where you park and never show off. Whenever I pull into a parking lot or into my development, the stereo goes down, and the windows go up. I know modifying cars is addictive, but if you can don't get anything that is really flashy.

Alarms only slow a theif down. If they want a car, they will get it.

If you do get an alarm though, dont install it in the usual places. Hide it. Never leave the wiring all over the place. Build it into the OE wiring harness, and cover it in electrical tape. Make sure you get a tilt sensor and a proximity sensor, as well as a glass breakage sensor. I know a few people who covered all the wiring under their dash in barbed wire. Dont forget the install the siren in an area where it would be very difficult to cut the wires (most of the time the siren gets cut and they could tow the car away without anyone knowing). I really like the tiny Piezo sirens that you can stick in the interior of the car. It's so loud you feel like your ears are bleeding.

Make sure your wheels have wheel locks on them. Don't leave anything in the open. If they want that iPod bad enough, theyll just break the window and grab it.

Prevention is key.

Sad but true. I'd be a lot more worried about someone stealing my wheels rather than the whole car.

In agreement with everything posted thus far.

I'm always worried but I do everything I can to avoid attention.

It's hard to do with the slammage, wheels and CF hood but I tried to park in the most visible locations possible.

Stereo goes down blocks before I get somewhere and windows go up, sunroof is closed.

Always do a visual inspection that I have NOTHING in view.

No receipts, cups, wires, chargers...anything and center console is always shut.

I use two different types of wheel locks and always park on a hill when I can.

That's easy to do in San Francisco since 80% of the city seems to be on a hill.

If anything I'd be nervous about people trying to steal my wheels. Maybe I should buy some of those locking lug nuts.

thanks everyone for the advice. yea i think i going to have to go with lojack. my car is lowered, but that is about all the aftermarket parts i have. and i always try to keep it discrete, people arent playing in oakland.
JL i have heard mixed things about lojack as well, but in my area they arent taking the cars for joy rides, they are bringing them to the chop shop. but maybe that isnt really a problem for the cl compared to the rsx because the k20 engine u can just throw into any ol' civic or integra.
thanks for the welcome too guys!

Hit me up if you ever want to get together for some photos of the CL.

Yeah...Oakland is no joke.

running faster time with a j than a k. and a whole lot more torque off the line.

I don't think our car is high on the list of getting stolen but i did just 3 weeks ago have someone bust my passenger window in. Fortunate for me, the alarm must have went off and scared them away. They didn't get anything but did put a big scratch in the metal where the glass meets the door. I subsequently had to replace the passenger side window.

Now, I also did have someone steal my driver side mirror. That really pissed me off...because it had to be someone in philadelphia with a white fucking 2001 or 2002 CL Korean person i believe...i'm almost 100% sure off it. I have not forgetten.

I live in philly.

I have a lojack for my cl. They give you two options now. Either option 1 where you can have the basic system in the car for about $699. With this, if you walk outside and find your car stolen, you supposed to notify lojack and they will call the police immediately and begin the tracking for your car for you. For an additional 200 dollars at $899, you can get the early warning system which requires that you carry around a small black keychain with your keys. The keychain is something electronic that is connected to the lojack system in your car and lojack notifys you immediately once the car is moved. So basically, the regular system will help you recover your car once YOU know its stolen and the advance version CALLS you and lets you know that your car has been moved.

Here's what I've discovered.

Once you get the lojack installed, the guy that comes out tells you to perform a personal test to make sure it works. So I did that one day and I left the keychain at home. See, the keychain has to make a connection with the actual system and if it doesn't, thats when the unit is alerted. Lojack didn't call me for about 30 minutes. I called them to find out why hasn't anybody notified me about my car being moved and they said the car has to be moving for at least 15-30 minutes consecutively before i'm notified. So I said, look, i live in Baltimore city, thats more than enough time for somebody to take my car to a chop shop. She was like oh well. Then she was like the lojack system was designed to catch thieves. It's a system the police developed to arrest car thieves. I'm like I don't care about catching thieves, I care about protecting my car.

LoJack DOESN'T CARE about recovering your vehicle, LoJack CARES about arresting and convicting carjackers.

If I would have known that, I would have just thrown a Viper unit on my car.

Oh, and when LoJack calls you, its not even a real person. It's a recording that says "Hello...this is LoJack just informing you that the early warning system on your car has been activated and you should make sure your car is okay. Goodbye"

If you're okay with spending some coin on your protection I would get a few sensors. You can get them for hood raise, glass break, car tilt etc that pages you when any trigger so you can go flying out your front door at night in the underwear gun in hand =)

I remember he was just going OFF on any white CL w/ an Asian driver.

hmmm i didnt know lojack was as expensive as 600-900 dollars, thought they were more around 400 dollars. and with all the things said, i dont know if its such a great investment. might just be a better idea to get a viper two way security pager.

I respectfully disagree.

The J series makes more power then a K in stock trim. But I'd take the K over the J any day of the week. The K has aftermarket support that the J series cant compete with. A K20Z2 with intake, header, exhaust and a tune makes on average 210-220hp at the wheels. The torque may not be as high as a J, but in a 2000lb Civic, too much torque is a bad thing. Theres a guy on another forum that had a K20Z3 (07 Si motor, rated at 197 stock). He had a 3" intake, 3" exhaust, header, and Blueprint cams. He made 256hp at the wheels. With the right tuning you can get 300whp reliably. If you want torque, get a K24 block and a K20 head.

Don't get me wrong, I love the J series, but I just don't think it is better in a Civic over a K.

it comes down to what u have done to the motor really. yes, the k has more aftermarket support but than again the j didnt really get a lot of attention. with more j being put in the civics and what not, maybe some company will make cams, IM, internal. time will tell
