Get the sound without the cost - Muffler Washer Mod
I have another solution thats even cheaper then removing the exhaust resonator and i'm surprised it hasnt been discovered.
I unbolted one muffler with a 14mm wrench and put 2 12mm flat washers on each of the 2 bolt studs. Bolted the muffler back up. This creates a small space before the exhaust gas passes thru the muffler between the muffler and the pipe. The result is increased sound around 2k and 4k. You do lose a little backpressure/torque cause its essentially a leak in the exhaust system but you can always undo it and it costs like $1 in washers. The sound is good, dare I say close to G35ish. Im gonna try going 1 washer each bolt soon and see if it changes the sound/increases the torque. I love this mod. Cheap, easy to do and easy to undo. Works on the TL, CL and probably any car with bolted on mufflers. Questions? Comments? Thanks for looking. -Discoverer of Airbag Logo mod and Muffer Washer mod |
I guess its not a bad idea if you are looking for sound more then performance.
|
why even call this a mod? it just adds noise.. sounds pointless to me
|
Be annoying and destroy the environment for under a dollar. lol
|
Yes, there is a decrease in torque but i cant imagine it being much different then running a 3in cat back.
Why do people do the exhaust resonator removal mod or get it replaced with a $50 magnaflow resonator? Because they want sound. People pay 20-80 dollars for that mod and im just trying to give people similar results. The washers go right infront of the muffler. Doesnt let any of the pre-cat exhaust gasses out. and it sounds like an aftermarket exhaust/G35 without the look or cost. Why do I feel like im getting flamed for this? I thought it would be a pretty decent mod. |
You're creating a vac into your muffler, a siphon more or less. It's using the exhaust flow to suck in the air in the space...and the water...and the road grime. Sounds like a good way to rust out your muffler ahead of time. :(

people arent exactly "flaming" you. i just personally see it pointless, which in a sense it is. i'm entitled to my opinion, just like you are to your ideas and mods. good luck let us know how it holds up long term
|
They push out at idle, but I bet it's a different story @ WOT :)
|
I would think that it would push out even more at WOT, but I see your logic.
Low humidity right now and sunny skies. I may undo the mod when the rain sets in and fog comes back. I ran single muffler for a couple of weeks, just unbolted the muffler and left it off the pipe. It was pretty loud but i was still muffing about 25-50% of the exhaust gases. No friggin torque though. |
. . . and here is a idea for a hot tub!
|
any sound clips?
|
i did this "mod" way back when i first got my car just for shits and giggles. sound was okay. but of course it doesn't replace a full cat-back system.

wait ................ i mean............. SOUND CLIPS! |
only thing i got is a cell phone with video. I guess i can try that if you guys want.

Woah, its wierd seeing Lippstuhs car when he first got it.
Have any of you driven the car with open headers? Theres no power. Surprisingly though, its not that loud until you get above 3k rpms. |

was that rev when it was cold? cause when the pipes are warmed up I can hear the tone being lower. Ill post a vid on monday or tuesday, i have to work all weekend.
also you used washers? how many? |
That's crazy, just a few washers to make that change.
I'm not going to do it but I guess it's something else "to do" |

i think it was 2, and it probably was a cold start... remember this was way back...
its louder because it's an "exhaust leak". plus check out distorted and ross's exhaust clips, no mufflers. sounds nice |

Update: 1 washer on each side is sufficient enough. The sound is almost the same as 2 washers but you get more of your torque back. Also less chance of water getting into the muffler.
|
i had a leak when i bolted up my tl-p mufflers (temp use only) and it sounded like shit. u can hear the leak from the connection and didnt like the sound at all. almost was like an old civic with a rusted out muffler.
|
My exhuast has way too much rusty shity all over it to even think about this... sounds interesting if you don't have anything else to do though
|
when I did it, it sounded clean. Not ricey. I really should have taken video clips for you guys.
I wouldnt share this with you guys if I didnt think it was worthy. |
I prefer my Tanabe supre hyper medallion exhaust that I bought for 463 shipped. and yes its a cat back.
|
and I prefer my Comptech axleback exhaust that i bought for 300 shipped.
but you cant beat 0.73 cents in washers for this mod. |

I did this to my stock muffler, before I put on my comptechs.
No doubt its ricey, but you can take it on and off easily if you dont like it. im just bein a cheap ass and say "hey, make your exhaust louder for 50 cents!" When I did it, I didnt regret it or wanted to change it back. |
iwant to do this Mod Today! But Is it the Mid mufflers or the Two rear mufflers

hey is it a Good Idea To GO From Stock Cat To just Straight Pipes?
Will That make it Sound Good? |
Depends what you consider good.
IMO, no, straight pipes on this car wont sound good. And not running a cat is illegal btw. |
I don't understand how this is a great mod. An exhaust system is supposed to be leak free. I would not take advice in doing this so called "mod." I would call this mod "how to screw up your exahust cans!"
The CL will never sound like a G35. If you want the sound of a G35 buy the damn car people. :whyme:  |
My tl sounds like a g35 below 3k. And I have my mid muffler removed. Not sure at the cl's bc they don't have a resonator like the tls

i have no cat. love the sound. two 2.5" flow through magnaflow mufflers
