Gas mileage 17% better on premium gas

With gas prices out of sight, I recently filled up with 89 octane instead of 91 (premium). Thinking I was saving money, I found my gas mileage was only 22.5 (average) for 2 tanks of the unleaded plus. With premium, the mileage went UP to 26.5 mpg. I guess it doesn't pay to save money on gas.

Has anybody else experienced such a dramatic difference?

BTW, I drive mostly freeway (with about 20% rush hour crap) at 80 mph.

well i wouldnt reccomend the lower grade only because it might cause engine knocking

when times are hard, everyone has to take a hit...even our cars...

remember that we get raped in cali. we have the most cars, the lowest octane premium, and the highest prices. i think the only other place to have higher prices ever is arizona and that was temp.

Dammmm Exon 93 is $1.77 up here in Dallas,, Anyway I tried 89 oct for one tank, mileage went down to 24 from 28. It also felt like I was towing something. Put 93oct back in and mileage went up to 31 for two tanks but it's back down to 26. I just recently put on headers in the hope I can get a even 30 mpgs for my 90 mile rt commute.

cheapest I have seen premium (91 octane here) is about 2.30 a gallon. lucky if you can find 87 for under 2 bucks.

plus its got some kind of environmentally friendly crap in it that gives you less mileage.

damn hippies and their 'environment'.
