Do new rotors require new pads(3k km on pads)

A bit of a silly question, but here it goes. One of my rear calipers seized up on me and I changed the calipers and the pads in the rear. However, at the time the shop didn't have any rotors that I wanted and I left my old rotors in not paying much attention to them. I checked my rotors out and they indeed should have been replaced at that time (a no brainer really!). Anyways, my new pads have about 3000 km on them. I am going to get new rotors, do I need to get new pads as well, or could I bed in my current pads with the new rotors?

Thanks

Change the pads... inexpensive and better safe than sorry. Mine froze right after our big snow just after I changed my pads. Had only about 3000 miles on them but new pads were 50.00. No big deal.

I would say change them, but you would probably get away with it ok if you did not. Especially on the rears.

I would always change my pads when I change my rotors.

You don't need to change the pads, they will bed in just fine.

change the pads, its not the wear out, its how even your surface is... old pads might make your rotor warp sooner due to uneven wear.

I used my old pads on new rotors. The pads had about 40k on them when I got new rotors. Now the combo is 15k and they stop fine, just the same as before except no warpage from the old rotors. As long as you scuff up the pads with some sandpaper, make sure they are evenly worn and do a proper bed-in, i think you'll be okay.

u dont need to change them, just sand them down till the old glaze(shine) is gone that way it is only new pad material touching the new rotor.

I personally used 120 grit (i think) or close to, and put the sand paper on a flat surface, placed the pad down and rubbed it on the sand paper til the glaze was gone. all was good.

Just don't go to town on the sanding, less is more in this case because u're less likely to wear off more of one side of the pad than the other.

save ur money

I just replaced my front pads and rotors last weekend. The pads had 60k miles on them and were only worn 1mm from the original thickness. They didn't need to be replaced but I did them anyways since I had the pads and had everything apart anyways. The rotors have been lasting about 30k miles before warping.

From everything I've read on this forum, spending 2x as much for rotors doesn't get you 2x as many miles out of them before they warp. Get the cheap ones and just replace them a bit more often (although it's not much more often) then the ones that cost 2x as much.

thats what im doing. I think I paid under 50 bucks each for rotors at my local Kragens and they've been warp free so far for a year.

well labor cost??
depends, i replaced mine with frozen cryotreated rotors over 3 yrs ago and its still goingg.....gggggggg (put at least 45kmiles in that time period) and still got quite a bit of rotor (depth)thickness left
