What they don't tell you in the post is the condition of the car. You can get all kinds of late model cars at the auction for a low price. The car can be a rebuild, have paint work, be totally trashed inside. Those numbers are the results of one auction and not representative of all sales.
I have access to one of the U.S.'s largest auction, Manheim. I've seen late model Audi's go trough and get 20K from retail, the only problem is that the complete front end had been replaced. I got my CL from the Auction last year and got a great deal at the time.
Also the auction has special sales during the year where prices are higher than normal. So the sales results vary from week to week. Also, the dealer also works off the "black book" when appraising a car's value. Not Nada, KBB, or Edmunds.
Just my .02 worth.
Peace out!

<snip>1999 Porsche Carrera Coupe VIN: WP0AA2999XS621198. Ocean Blue Metallic over charcoal and gray interior with only 25,000 miles. This stunning coupe is nicely optioned with power memory seats, Am/Fm/Cd player, leather seating and aluminum shifter and brake handle. Impeccably detailed and fully serviced with new brakes and tires, this two owner car comes with all tools, records, manuals, an extra set of custom wheels and a Porsche car cover for the bargain price of $44,100. </snip>
Early 996s (especially the C2's) have dropped in price. Late 993s, which are older, are usually worth more then a comparable 996. A 4 year old 996 C2 is usually worth about half of the original MSRP.
The Boxster S seems to be a excellent deal, if there is nothing wrong w/ the car. The problem with auction cars, is that you usually can't get a pre-purchase inspection done on a car before you bid on it. Condition is everything on a high priced pcar, and without being able to test drive and have a competant shop inspect a car beforehand, you never know what you're getting yourself into.
Nparker makes a good point about "auction" cars being an unknown quantity. For a dealer, the risk isn't as big as w/ a private buyer. A dealer will buy and sell many cars, and can spread out any losses incured from a "bad" car over the profits from other "good" cars.
There is a Highline auction place in PA that the locator service linked to above ( http://www.europeanlocators.com ) can buy a car for a private individual for a fee, but without being able to get a PPI done on a car beforehand, that process can be at best a gamble.
It's nice to know what dealers pay for cars tho'
