Cool AppRadio 3 installed in Acura CL-S

Factory CD changer started jamming a lot so I looked into new head units. Went with the new Pioneer AppRadio 3.

Factory subs work fine without the need to splice anything as others had claimed. Biggest pain was 2 of the 3 screws that hold the head unit in place on the driver side and 1 on the passenger that had to be drilled out as even an impact screwdriver after Liquid Wrench had done it's thing for over an hour wouldn't free them.

Since it supports a backup camera I threw in a cheap $12 one from Amazon that works fine. Comes on automatically when you put the car in reverse or can be checked any time while driving by pulling it up on the head unit so you can monitor a trailer (who would pull a trailer with a CL-S) or see the guy behind you.

Works slick. Can control my iPhone 5 right from the touch screen. Run any GPS app I want while streaming Pandora or whatever other audio app you like. Siri works through the unit so you can have it make calls or play specific songs. Should be interesting to see what is added with the release of iOS 7 in a couple weeks and the new iOS In The Car features it will add.
Installed the parking brake bypass so you can watch video and do some other things not normally allowed while driving although I have no intention of ever watching any video on it as that seems pretty silly.

Went with the 210 which has a CD/DVD player. Cruchfield and Best Buy charge $499 for it but Amazon has it for just under $399. Even buying the $12 mounting kit & $5 wiring harness from them still makes it a much better deal.

Now if only I didn't have the stupid factory GPS sitting there being worthless at this point. Looks a little goofy with the 2 screens especially since the AppRadio one is so nice and the factory GPS is all old and crappy looking.

looks nice !
I was contemplating the Appradio 3 as well but I have an Android phone (Galaxy Nexus) and I've heard it's somewhat limited in terms of compatibility and features with android+appradio.

Support for Android phones is more limited. Know there are a small number it supports at this point but they may add more with future software updates. Definitely a downside to Android in general as it's harder to support when there are 10000x different hardware devices that each function differently vs iOS where there are just a few that function in very much the same ways.

Mounting kit meaning the internal kit for mounting the unit or the plastic bracket surrounding the screen? If it's not the latter, where'd you get that frame from? It looks pretty slick.

Can't go wrong with Pioneer

Nice, I recently went with the Sony 610bt with Mirror Link. After a little bit of internet searching and digging i got it to work good with my GS3 phone mirroring the screen/apps. I need to pick up the steering wheel control interface now.

How about replacing your OEM Navi screen with a Tablet and connecting that to your HU as a 2nd screen, or as a media storage device for all your movies and music?

Black plastic surround was part of the mounting kit I grabbed from Amazon.

Thought about replacing the crappy old navi with an iPad mini and may do it at some point in the future. Right now I just wanted something quick and easy that worked without messing around with it too much. Issue I saw with the iPad mini option was that I'd have to setup tethering which can be a pain to get working every time. This current setup works perfectly. Get in the car and boom it's on Bluetooth streaming from Pandora right where it left off.

I personally think the 2 screens looks sweet . So what if it's out dated people are stil impressed when you tell them the navi is from 2001 with a 2007 disk lol .

So now navi to non-navi swaps are the rave? Man, I just did the navi swap a couple years ago too. At least I saved my parts.

I'd gladly go non-navi. The factory navi has always been junk.

Wouldn't you still need it for AC control or is there a work around?

The dual screens look like the new RLX & MDX....

Just replace the factory navi with a tablet, and hook it right to the appradio if you want it to look more modern.

Looks great! 2 questions:

1) Which backup camera did you get?
2) How did you get the sub working with no extra splicing?? Everywhere I have read seems to indicate that you must do this to get the OEM Bose sub to work.

Went with this cheap $13 camera. It does the job.

Amazon.com: Esky Waterproof NTSC Universal Car Rearview License Plate 1/4 Inch CMOS Backup Camera + IR Night Vision: Car Electronics Amazon.com: Esky Waterproof NTSC Universal Car Rearview License Plate 1/4 Inch CMOS Backup Camera + IR Night Vision: Car Electronics

Not sure on the wiring. Hooked it up to the harness and it worked. Makes sense that if the factory stereo could work with the factory sub using that wiring that an aftermarket should work also.

Hmm is this the new trend nowadays to put monitors in cars?

for some reason I can't stand monitors in any type of car unless its in a minivan, maybe I am just old school.

Think the look of putting a single DIN in the double DIN spot our cars have looks like shit. Additionally, why not put in something that can work with your cell phone and be an extension of it?

Guess it is a bit modern for an old car made for old people in the 40+ crowd.

Yeah guess I am just not a fan of screens in cars, I just prefer the simple but functional layout, probably explains why i will probably never own a new car, been living in 80-early 2000's cars for the last 15 years.

Everything has gone all buttons. Million systems to control the car too. Traction, stability, torque-vectoring, etc. Few cars you really control anymore. Then again, thats what the American public wants. 99% of them want something that drives itself. Theres a reason that less than 20% of Americans even know how to drive a manual transmission.

If you have an Android, you have to root your phone then download the app. AR Liberator. It opens up COMPLETE control of your phone from the head unit. Everything displayed on the phone shows on the head unit, Fullscreen. My neighbor did this. Instructions are on Youtube.

On the iPhone you can use most apps on it but for full support, you want to jailbreak and install AppRadio Extensions. It also gets rid of stuff like normally the AppRadio has to request to launch apps and you have to click OK on the iPhone screen to allow it. It gets rid of that nag screen.

Really there aren't many apps that you need that stuff for though. While it might be funny to show someone that you can play Angry Birds on the screen, you aren't ever going to use that.

Hopefully this doesn't fall on deaf ears, this is the closet thread ive found in my extensive search....but i'm in this exact situation now and instead of going with the double-din and still having the factory navi which would be practically useless other than for the air flow control.

Is it possible to have one unit that will be able to display the navi along with temp controls.

But if all else fail my attempt to mimic the above setup would be to use the top screen with a converter to display the front view camera and the bottom for the rear view and of course navi/radio/apps etc

Any help would be greatly appreciated

There isn't any way to have 1 unit do all of it unless you switch everything over to the non-navi style HVAC which is a ton of work. But you'll have to do that if you want the spot where the factory navi went to be empty.

I don't even notice the factory navi anymore and just leave it on the stary startup screen all the time unless I want to see street views.

Thanks for the reply I didn't think i was going to get a reply so quick since it been about 2yrs on this thread lol but im glad i found your thread and thanks for the info and getting back to me

I'll go ahead and do the dual setup, I looked at some videos and it was alot just to remove and add back the factory navi, so i can only imagine what it would be like to revert it back to a non-navi

But again, thanks for the help..very much appreaciated
