anything tricky with installing rotors on our cars?

I was just told it would take 3 hours to change rotors on my 03 CL-s. He said there was something odd/tricky with them. Is that a realistic time? Whats the deal with these? Do we not have floating rotors?

the only thing "tricky" about them is the screws that hold the rotor to the hub..

they usually require an impact screwdriver to remove.

Me and my brother are both doing our fronts this weekend. He has a 2nd gen Tl so its the same setup. I got an impact driver for 8 dollars at the local hardware store. I will let you know how it goes if you have not already done yours.

If the screw is stuck, just drill it out. I've done that to all my Honda's since they corrode easily and seize up.

The screw just holds them in place at the factory, drill them out and be done with them.

You dont have to put them back in either. They are just there to hold the rotors on the hib as the car runs down the assembly line.

And 3 hours is a lot of time for front brakes. Oh wait, you did not say if it was all four or just front or rear. If you have done brakes before you should be able to get them done in about 30 min each side no problem. Plus your time to lift and remove the wheels from the car.

Yep, I just drilled 'em out.

Just make sure you've got good drill bits. Shouldn't take more than a couple minutes per screw to drill 'em out...

I had a pin that was stuck, so it took a bit to get that squared away... and I had to run and get new drill bits, so it took me about 4 hours or so, but I'm the worlds slowest mechanic.

Good job not letting someone rip you off! Feels better to do it your self anyways.

What kind of brakes did you get?

Thats a little much for brakes but close to standard for flag time for a front brake job. You have to remember that its book time at a shop, so it doesn't matter how much time it takes the tech to do the work, its a standard rate. We use Mitchel at our shop so its the same across the board. Just paying for his time. Most people don't want to take the time or have the skills to do something like brakes. But thats what this forum is for! GL with the work, hope you upgraded the brakes while you were in there!

They said book time was 3.2 but honda said book time was 1.5 so I went there. I used ebc pads and rotors and like them. Thanks for chiming in.

lol i've done the brakes on the whole car in an hour or less.

most time consuming thing is putting the tire back on. lowering the one side and going to the next.

all you need is a 17, 14, 12, and wrachet you're willing to smack in reverse...or small breaker bar to undo bolts, tq wrench (if you must, for tightening). and extensions help. and a drill with proper bit to undo rotor screws.

i forgot if the rear caliper bolts are 14 or 15mm.. make sure u got both

and you're good

i was gonna let my mechanic do them all for me for 100 or so, but hey...that's money in my pocket

Mine are done. I tried to use an impact driver, regular screwdriver, and as many other methods as i could think of to get off the retaining screws. Finally i just drilled them. Don't even waste your time just go right to drilling them.

Never installed them personally but based on this feedback, sounds easy enough to DIY.

hmm I managed to do mine without that step.

Sorry to thread jack, but does anyone remember if you have to remove the hub cap on the rear to pull the rotor off? Or just unbolt the piston and remove/drill out the retaining screws on the rotors and yank the sucker off?
