55 watt HID's

Has anyone put this in a CL-S? I am about to swap out my stock HID's for an aftermarket set and I was gonna go with the 55 for some better light output. My buddy has had a set for a while on his car and they look amazing. Any issues with heating up the housing?

Damn I was really hoping to make this work. Maybe I should do a little more research first before I put these in and ruin my new headlights!

Looks like it can be remedied with some heating and cooling (insulated) aluminum tape... any thoughts? hell i'm sure there are options that are not coming to me right now that any number of you could post up in a sec or 2...

With a bit of patience and steady hands.

Aluminum tape for what? The reflector bowl? Only if you want your lights to be less effective.

Thats exactly what I was asking! I mean i appreciate the input. And those pictures deff don't help, lol. But I just need to know if anyone has actually done this. From my knowledge, HID's burn cooler than halogen, and most halogen headlights are 55w if not more. Shouldn't be any issues. Just wanted to know if anyone has done this or not.

Thats the thing right there.

Halogens burn at 55w.
HIDs burn at 35w.

Thats why the HIDs are cooler then the halogens. But bump them up to 55w and they burn hotter.

If the search function on the HID forum didnt suck so much Id find the thread with all the info.

Do you guys think it would be possible if there was some sort of venting? similar to what MrFluffy did with his fogs? except not so drastic lol
55 watt HID's would be pretty sweet, and I need a new set soooo

Vents in the headlight? Only if you want it to fog up or get other crap in it.

Honestly, if the 55W ballasts were much better, OEs would be using them. The benefit of 55W over 35W is not that drastic (literally 400 Lumens brighter at best when using 4300K bulbs). BTW, the bulbs these aftermarket kits use are the same bulbs you get in a 35W kit, youre just boosting them which shortens lifespan. There are only a few bulbs that are rated at 50W and beyond (which most "55W" ballasts output around 48-50W if you're lucky) but they are not DOT legal, nor are they made on any other base but D2S.

If you are running old bulbs, change them. Thats a big reason why it looks dim. As bulbs age, they climb up the Kelvin scale thus reducing the Lumens.

Well the 55watt kit is in! The cut off is insane, the light output is unreal! Been running them for about a week now. No issues, nothing but bright lights and sick HID hapiness!

55watt 8K kit:

First fired up and letting them 'burn in'

Inside of the garage in the middle of the day!

Night time cut-off on the garage!

forgot to say something, but our headlights have that metal housing where the hid goes in,
the metal thing that cuts off the light..

i dont think the hid's would burn the housing because that the metal thing is there to take up heat,

If Ive said the 55w bulbs would melt the housing I misspoke. They will burn off the chrome finish however.

And the metal cap is right in front of the bulb. Alot of the heat isnt in front of the bulb. Most of the heat is directly in the center of the bulb (where the capsule is located) and it radiates out towards the sides.

your right civic, but i would guess the metal cap would still adsorb most of the heat, but thats my guessing, well i guess we wont know until time passes by right?

also in the first picture, where the chrome got burned by the hid,
the bulb is sitting pretty close to the housing if you dont see it, (looks like foglights)
but to where our bulb sits in the headlight, it has a pretty big gap from the bulb to the ceiling of the headlight

im pretty sure it wont burn any chrome off

Those are Hella low beam lights IIRC, not fog lights. And the spacing isnt much different.

Any updates?

Where did you get the 55 watt HID's

I'm debating either upgrading to these or doing a projector retrofit

UPDATE!!

I've had these in for a few weeks now. I almost only drive at night cause of my work hours, and no issues! Headlights are perfect, my reflector backing is perfect! Love the HID's!

I got them from DDM. www.ddmtuning.com

No issues. I always drive with my headlight on as soon as the sun starts to fade. Headlamps are in perfect shape!

That actually made me LOL.

I didnt mean to come across as an ass, but such a short term test does not mean theyre going to last forever.

It could take 4 months, it could take a year. Whos knows. But Ive seen what 55W HIDs do to both reflectors and projectors and theres no way Ill run them anytime soon.

Fair enough. I knew you were just saying your bit, don't worry you didn't hurt my feeling, haha. I hope they last a while cause I'm really happy with them. I have a few of my buds running them as well with no issues in different cars with even smaller housings with both reflectors and projectors. Just wanted to share the success!
