I don't play the recorder (the guitar is my instrument). But IMHO the best concert I've ever attended featured a recorder: Michala Petri, Ithaca NY, late 1980s.

I've been playing piano since I was five and use to play the drums when i was a kid... until my dad sold his set! I've always been a bit more into sports than playing musical instruments. softball, soccer, golf, tennis, basketball, football, volleyball. maybe that's why i have such a bum arm... should have stuck with the ivories

i dont know why i didnt start a thread like this earlier...
i got really lucky because both my parents majored in music while at school and went beyond the four year college to study even more music in Germany (where I was born), so somtimes i like to say music is "in my blood." my mom taught me piano from kindergarten to 4th grade, then i quit...i played violin from 3rd grade to 10th grade, but got tired of it (next school year i will be a freshman in college). right now, my main instruments are acoustic guitar (been playing for 7 or 8 years) and drums (for about 4 years now). i've never had private lessons (except from my mom for piano), just self taught i guess. oh, and i like to sing as well. music is a huge part of my life.

Guess it all depends on what buttons you press. Luckily, I don't need sheet music to play. It all comes from my head!

you know i should've added, what songs can you play with your musical instrument skills?

i can play a certain parts of these songs with the guitar:

a.zeppelin's: stairway to heaven and whole lotta love
b.beatles': yesterday, day tripper, and here comes the sun
c. doors: light my fire
d. nirvana: come as you are
e. third eye blind song: jumper

still got a long way to go

Hey I played the piano and played the drums as a kid too! But gosh, don't ask me to hit a volleyball, I always hit the ceiling.

ba-dum, ching!

I just thought it was funny, and viola-ish, that you explained what a viola is in your post. To me it's like saying that I work in Philadelphia, which is between NY and Washington (incidentally, that's how I explain it to foreigners).

How do you keep your violin from being stolen?

- Store it in a viola case!

jcg, who cannot play a string and is just a fan

You would not even believe how many people ask.."What's a viola?" when I tell them what I play. After 10 years of explaining it after the fact, I just assume no one has any idea.

Flute was the first instrument, then picked up drums and switched to trombone as primary instrument in HS. Played some baritone as well. Marimba and xylophone for some indoor percussion stuff. Guitar and piano self taught for fun on the side .

I am really hoping to start piano lessons soon. But might put it on hold until I'm less busy in mid april. I think everyone should learn some instrument even if it's something like the recorder or hell even a harmonica. I'm also pretty sure being able to walk up to a random piano with your date/G/F/Wife and being able to play it properly would drive her crazy.

Piano from the age of 7 to 15.

Acoustic/Electric/Bass guitar from 14 until really 22. I still have my electric, but it mostly collects dust, hanging on my wall.

Some basic drums, when I was in a band.
