What kind of a moron...

...leaves a backpack next to a walkway in a cemetery with a shotgun in it and two live rounds on the ground next to the backpack?

I ask because today I was out for a run near my office; part of my run went through a cemetery near my office and as I was tooling along my brain said, "What the hell?!?!?"

I turned around and noticed a tallish looking backpack leaning up against a tree and two live rounds on the ground next to it. I picked up the backpack, it was heavier than I would have guessed, zipped it open and saw a fairly expensive looking pump action shotgun inside. "Yikes!" said my brain, "Not exactly the kind of thing which should be laying around in a cemetery where a lot of school kids ride their bikes through on the way home from school."

I picked up the backpack, plopped the two live rounds into a side pocket, and immediately called the police. A bored sounding switchboard operator answered, and when I told her what I'd found she suddenly perked up and said, "I'll transfer you to dispatch immediately!"

When the dispatch operator picked up she also sounded a bit bored, but the instant she heard what I'd found she livened up and asked, "Where exactly are you?" I gave her my location, a description of what I was wearing, and my phone number. She told me a cruiser was on it's way to me; we agreed on the landmark for me to wait beside, and five minutes later the officer, blue lights blazing, pulled up. He had me step back while he inspected the backpack, secured it in the hatch of his SUV, had me sit in the "tank" (right rear seat) so I could direct him to where I'd found the backpack; once there I showed him the spot, and gave a statement. The officer asked me if I needed a ride, and by then the sweat on my body from my run combined with standing around for more than ten minutes combined with an OAT of maybe 20°F meant my run was over; I had him drive me up to the front door of our office building where he had to get out, walk around the cruiser and let me out. We shook hands and I went inside only to find I had quite the audience.

So, I have a few theories what would possess someone to abandon an expensive shotgun, live rounds included, in a public cemetery; I'm sure I haven't even remotely considered all scenarios; any thoughts?

Random guess, gun was stolen or used in a crime and ditched.

One of my theories as well. The gun looked to either be brand new or extremely well maintained.

What kind of a moron touches a back pack in that situation?

Next time, leave it for the professionals to determine the contents....

Seriously, you'd rather some kids find it and kill someone?

No, stay on site and alert the authorities, but don't touch it. It could have been a booby trap / set up waiting for the first fool to touch it/ move it.

Your comments come from the perspective of armchair hindsight, you were not there.

It’s still a valid point to not investigate yourself. That doesn’t mean you have to leave the scene. What would stop someone from putting a bomb in there?

I’m not here to criticize you. What you did was honorable. I think that others reading this may need some more perspective in case they encounter a similar situation though.

Something tells me it was left for someone to find. Why would a criminal fleeing a crime leave two live rounds next to the backpack? Were there any used rounds? Gun loaded? Safety set?

I don’t have an explanation for why anyone would do it, but my bet is they wanted kids to find it.

A further wrinkle is the other side of the woods from where I found the backpack, a distance of maybe 100 yards, is a state prison.

Regarding just standing there and waiting for the local constabulary; i deemed that to be a bad option as I didn't want to end up going toe to toe with the idiot who left it there.

Either that or someone's entrance plan; a new "women's prison" is set to open shortly, and even closer to the cemetery than the men's prison.

Yeah that is a tough one. I guess I would lean toward choosing to avoid risks I know exist.

I would have done the officer the courtesy of not having to bend over and held the shotgun up for him so that when he arrived, he could safely ascertain that I found a shotgun

Glad nothing happened, OP. Many people would've been like my gainz are more important than some livez. Props to you.

Thanks! I did in fact pick it up for him; when he got out of his cruiser I identified myself, we shook hands, and then I handed him the backpack containing the shotgun and other goodies. He quickly zipped open the front pocket about six inches, confirmed this was no hoax, and put it into the hatch area of his SUV.
