What alcohol do you start with? What's available in PA? I have to go north to NH for 75.5%. Grain is unavailable in MA because dumb college kids need nannies.

Client gave me a bottle of Fuzzy's vodka after trial. I guess that is the newest addition to the cabinet.

Had a really nice drink last night at a restaurant:

old scout bourbon, plymouth sloe gin, thai bird honey, basil, garnished with a lemon

Was called a "Sloe Burn". Wow. I need to pick up some Sloe Gin.

Last night was LA Magazine's First Annual Whiskey Festival.

It was a pretty cool set up. They held it at the La Brea Tarpits Museum and it was "cocktail attire" event. When you get there and check in they give you a free monogrammed glass.

There were 20+ distillers there providing free pours of their product with specialists on hand to talk about it. Live band entertainment, Food, and other novelties such as free shoe shines and a cigar company hand rolling on the spot, also complimentary.

It was well done and well organized. I probably hit up about half of the distillers. Two of my favorites where there: Whistlepig and Bulleit. I discovered Ballast Point (as in the beer) also has a distillery and is making whiskey that was decent. I tried and was VERY impressed with the Japanese whiskey, Kikori.

It was a good time, hope I can go again next year.

Moved my Whiskey Cabinet downstairs to the man-cave and realized that I have a problem, and that problem is that I'm way stocked up on good booze. I definitely need to hit up some of my collection

I needed a bottle of scotch recently and stumbled upon Dewar's 12 year blend. Wow, for under $30, its nice stuff!

I have not really found blends to be my thing, but this one is a lot closer to a single malt than a blend.

If you like that J, I highly recommend their Signature. Comes in a gorgeous box too.

Costs a bit more but man, is it lovely.

Yeah, I think it's Dewar's taking on the Blue but IMO, the box is significantly better and that bottle is just gorgeous. Tastes great...Fruity with caramel and vanilla tastes. (Mind you, I do not enjoy the very peaty and smoky whiskeys. So, keep that in mind with any I recommend. )

Lately I've been trying to make a great Old Fashioned. I recently got Bulleit Whiskey Bourbon because I was told that was a great one to use. It definitely tasted better than the one I made with Woodford Reserve.

Wow, that's REALLY subjective... What kind of whiskey do you prefer? Since that's the base (and main character), I might try to figure out what kind of whiskey you like best (bourbon, rye, etc.) and then start from there.

Here's a short write-up of a booze author's suggestions:

https://vinepair.com/buy-this-booze/...old-fashioned/

(please IGNORE what they say about Eagle Rare being good and DON'T buy it. It's hard enough for me to find it without all you yahoos buying it, too. )

I have a friend who is big into scotch, but, after two kids and what not, his discretionary spending isn't what it used to be. Enter Dewar's- honestly, for the price, it's not bad at all. He drinks this stuff on the regular and I've had it on the occasion... Given it's price point, it's pretty good.

It's not their regular "white label" stuff, which I don't care for. I have to agree, for the price point, the 12 year blend is pretty darn good.

I'm not a huge rye guy, but I had a tasting of Michters once and really liked their whiskeys. Whiskies? Whiskers?

My go to has been Toki, Japanese whiskey because I'm a fucking weeb. Hibiki Harmony isn't bad either for something available at Costco
