Sadly the only drink I had access to this weekend was beer and I polished off a 6 of Guiness Stout which is always a treat.

Friend of mine won the lottery for a bottle of GTS, about $150 a bottle. We did a side by side with the Stagg Junior, the GTS was incredibly smooth and had amazing character. The Junior was spicy as hell, but still very good. Could not hang with the GTS though

Hear a ton about Stagg from others...I'll need to give it a try sometime.

Hockey wise...lost the championship Turkey day tournament game this morning 4-3. Starting my football day off with some home made beef jerky...and some Jonnie Blue. I know...for the money, there's better out there...but I like it.

Jonnie Blue

Cheers

That's not too bad at all, that's at least $20 less than anywhere else I've seen it...got my bottle up in canada, got a nice deal on it. Those rock glasses aren't too shabby either...nice and simple.

Agreed - went over to Ohio and picked up a shit ton of wine for the wife. Not only are the prices good, but they give an extra 10% for every '6 pack' you buy. PA needs to get with the times...it'd be nice to just pick this up in Cranberry.

Ack, can you clarify PA alcohol laws? We were in the Poconos and we had to buy a 12 and then a 6 on totally different receipts like a minute apart

They have stupid laws about how many ounces can be bought at one time from grocery stores and not beer distributors. It's really dumb. We just got the laws changed to allow beer and wine to even be sold at the grocery store, took decades to get that far

Gold and Green are smoother and better tasting IMO...Blue is over priced marketing.

Sadly...never had either...but have been told similar by others. Blue...while marketed well, is listed as just a blend. Sure it taste good...but the blend could be red and black for all we know. There's no age year listed for it. I'll step up my game and try both...

Old school today. Belvedere, shaken... Slightly dirty but an extra olive for sure. Extra dry and high...all while looking at the unopened bottle of vermouth. Set in a frozen chilled glass.

Whiskey group that I'm a part of did a barrel pick with New Riff, I'm super impressed with how good it is and how smooth, definitely one of my favorites right now

My sister and I are going to stock my brother's non-existent bar for his 40th birthday present.

He's an amateur drinker, so we are looking to get him just a midrange 750ml bottle of a few different things. One whiskey, one bourbon, one single malt, one rum, one gin, one vodka, each in the $25-$50/bottle range (no JWB, etc...).

I am looking for suggestions that are pretty easy drinking (no cask strength, etc.) since he is a novice boozer.

Suggestions for each?

I am particularly at a loss for Rum, since I have not really had much experience with it.

Whiskey - ?Dewars, The Ancestor 12 Year Blend?
Bourbon - ?Eagle Rare?
Single Malt - ?
Rum - ?
Gin - ?Plymouth?
Vodka - ?Chopin?

YES! IMO, Chopin or Belvedere are the best tasting "premium" vodkas. I like the potato vodkas better than rye so I'd go Chopin. Türi would be up there as well if you were considering rye vodkas.

No, they had a number of those bottles as well, this was only 35 bucks a bottle, but it was extremely limited release
