Is anyone else looking at this... This has been going on for a few days in the media, but according to the CDC website information on this virus, the child has been infected for probably a week...not good!

I have already been to the CDC website...Mexico City could be a serious problem soon... praying for better, being informed is KEY!

NOTE: as of posting this....I have NOT been able to determine the city in Texas where this child has been quarantined .... nice huh? It is most likely San Antonio, but I am not sure... if anyone finds out.. please let me know... thanks!

Rick

I heard it was the "San Antonio area." I'm only 40 minutes north of SA on IH35, so I hope it's not in my town!

Kinda crazy how they won't really say... My sister is also a doctor... I am waiting to hear back from her and get her side of it, since her practice includes alot of patients who travel nationally and internationally...

This scares me more than the avian flu scare. Pigs have compatible parts for humans.

what kinda scares me is how it looks like the outbreak is following the roads like a truck... the airports are what is bugging me because this flu is contagious for a whole day before the infected person has any symptoms... that's just not cool...

Yeah, this strain appears to be highly contagious.

The number of cases in the U.S. still stands at eight, all in California and Texas. The Texas health department announced Saturday that Byron Steele High School in Cibolo, near San Antonio, will temporarily close as local health and school officials work to keep the virus from spreading. Swine flu was confirmed earlier this month in two students from the school, and a third student is listed as a probable case with confirmatory lab test results pending. The original two have recovered, and the third is recovering.
"The purpose is to reduce the risk to students, staff and the community," said Sandra Guerra, M.D., the public health authority for Guadalupe County, Texas.
The World Health Organization’s director-general, Margaret Chan, said the outbreak of the never-before-seen virus is a very serious situation and has “pandemic potential.” But she said it is still too early to tell if it would become a pandemic.
“The situation is evolving quickly,” Chan said in a telephone news conference in Geneva. “A new disease is by definition poorly understood.”
This virus is a mix of human, pig and bird strains that prompted WHO to meet Saturday to consider declaring an international public health emergency — a step that could lead to travel advisories, trade restrictions and border closures. Spokesman Gregory Hartl said a decision would not be made Saturday.
Scientists have warned for years about the potential for a pandemic from viruses that mix genetic material from humans and animals. Another reason to worry is that authorities said the dead so far don’t include vulnerable infants and elderly. The Spanish flu pandemic, which killed at least 40 million people worldwide in 1918-19, also first struck otherwise healthy young adults.
The good news is:

A “seed stock” genetically matched to the new swine flu virus has been created by the CDC, said Dr. Richard Besser, the agency’s acting director. If the government decides vaccine production is necessary, manufacturers would need that stock to get started. The CDC says two flu drugs, Tamiflu and Relenza, seem effective against the new strain. Roche, the maker of Tamiflu, said the company is prepared to immediately deploy a stockpile of the drug if requested. Both drugs must be taken early, within a few days of the onset of symptoms, to be most effective.

Unfortunately this is going to spread all over the U.S. in a couple of weeks and globally shortly thereafter. It's probably too late for quarantine measures to be effective.

Crazy town... I used to spend my summers there and go to Tijuana to get cheap gas and great food!

Main problem areas are going to be public places where lots of peeps congregate and are in pretty close physical contact... Schools, Churches, Malls, Public Transportation of all kinds... Theaters... this just blows!

I think you may be right.... with people being infectious / contagious a whole 24 hours BEFORE they get sick, you just don't know who's who until a day too late!

The part which scares me the most is the majority of the infected are in the 25-45 year old range, not the usual infant or elderly high risk victims.

This swine flu and regular flu can have similar symptoms — mostly fever, cough and sore throat, though some of the U.S. victims who recovered also experienced vomiting and diarrhea. But unlike with regular flu, humans don’t have natural immunity to a virus that includes animal genes — and new vaccines can take months to bring into use.

It definitely bears serious watching...I guess that's b/c it is a powerful bug... the flu usually kills about 250,000 to 500,000 people a year, but those are usually infants and elderly...

WHO and CDC are probably gonna have to go to Mexican, Canadian, and US Presidents pretty soon with some sort of plan... I know the governments are watching, but prudence makes for a slow draw in a gunfight...

If its Flu-Like symptoms, don't sit on it... get to the doctor, so you can get treated with Tamiflu... it helps to decrease the symptoms slightly, but also reduces the length of time you are ill...

I don't have any of the flu symptoms except for a slightly scratchy throat. I haven't lost my appetite, either and don't feel sleepy or have a lack of energy. I just feel generally crappy.

Might be a good idea to pick up some N95 masks before they're all gone.
