Uber

People either seem to love or hate this service. After a tempestuous start in Portland late last year, both Uber and Lyft got the preliminary thumbs-up from the City Council under a 120 day trial period. My current job is really feast or famine so I decided to give driving for Uber a shot on my days off and so far, I'm really liking it.

Last night was my first time out and I'll admit I was a little nervous about letting complete strangers into my car since I'm so anal about its appearance but it seems to be taking the taxi-type abuse in stride. People are generally pretty awesome (and love Uber) unless you get one of those obnoxious drunk types which, in Portland, is not uncommon on Friday and Saturday nights. I also like working nights because the traffic is thin and driving anywhere in this town during the day anymore makes getting mauled by a lion seem like an appealing alternative.

My plan is to do this on weekend nights from 9 or so and on my days off when I feel like it until I get tired enough that I'm ready to go home. I'm going to pay off my debts first and then use the proceeds for my 'fun' funds.

Stay tuned for strange stories from the streets of the People's Republik of Portlandia.

Cool, I read an article where they took a Rolls out in San Fran for some Uber fun, crazy stories. Obviously, the wear and miles on the RR didn't make sense but does the money you make out weight the depreciated value of your car?

Oh, I want to be on the PM list for the pics of the first woman to strip down in your backseat (actually, all the hot womens).

How often do Uber drivers get asked to come inside for a cup of coffee?

The one time I used it I saw in San Francisco and had a free $30 credit. Our trip cost was $28 so the whole ride was free, but I still tipped the guy cash. Very nice guy, pleasant trip, would use again.

My friends tell me I should be an uber drive just because I care about my car and put luxury type mods in the interior like memory foam neck rests and a tray with water/gum for anyone who is a passenger.

My only response was "like hell I am going to let strangers in my car regularly. I barely let YOU in here you know."

I watched a video where Carlos Mencia drove around in a low rider on hydros for uber or lyft. He'd roll up to pick up older ladies and flirt with them and show of his hydraulics.

And just like with volk verse rota, you can't always tell on the outside but on the inside where it counts some are more far superior than others.

Hope the job goes well!

Having never used a taxi or uber before, I've always wondered what the etiquette was for where to sit? Passenger seat or always the back seat?

^depends if you like talking to the driver or not.

i always sit in the front seat of my uber's so that I can talk to them, ie: directions, feeling them out so that they dont rape me, etc...etc.

its uber boring to NOT talk during a car ride....especially if its longer than 5 mins.

just like Andrew's intent of starting this thread with interesting stories, there's always a different driver with a different personality, so its super fun to engage the driver.

plus, if your interest ranges from a wide variety of things, you can end up making friends, easily.

a driver told me that he was invited to a bachelorette party, i thought that was cool!

When I use uber I always sit in the back

Last one I used was a Acura TL . Other people look in the car wondering why one guy in front and one on back but it's not a taxi

So I like he awkward looks

You can talk to them sitting in the back not like they can't hear you

Justin-sitting in front prevents rapes ? Lol

Andrew, hope it works well for you (and the car!)

OTOH, have you thought at all about using that free time to go back to school? I have a sneaking suspicion you would make a damn good traffic engineer, city planner, or similar.

The cab industry in Toronto is up in arms about this service. They don't want competition.

Cab industry in TO deserves to lose every single ride that goes to Uber. Cabs in this city are out of control. I've been refused rides hundreds of times because my fare is short, or going in the opposite direction they want to go. I've been told just as many times that Oh ooops sorry I don't have change for a $20, and my credit machine is broken, only to magically start working when I get out in protest.

I hope Uber is here to stay.

I'd rather bring my car downtown and pay for parking. That's how much I hate the cabs and public transit here in Toronto.
