It's something to watch...like The Flash, not outstanding...I'll continue to give it a chance for another couple more episodes...

I can easily admit the storyear and characters are the best. But the part of me that grew up with batman is really enjoying these background stories.
I like seeing Bruce Oswald Selina and Edward. Knowing who they become makes it interesting for me.

Seeing what? Nygma make the same obnoxious comments episode after episode? He is easily the worst character on the show aside from Montoya.

Bullock...has the ability to be the best character on the show. But they are taking their sweet time and he is coming off one note at this point. Yeah. This week they finally attempted to flesh him out a little. But they need more.

Bruce. This show isn't supposed to be about him. His small cameo this week is about all the interaction we should have with him.

This weeks episode overall. Decent. But trying to play on the popularity of Hannibal without being able to really take it to that level. Really just another baddie of the week.

I don't hate the show. I'm watching it. But it's FAR from hitting the potential of what Thai show was supposed to be. The ONLY character we are seeing originate and change and grow and will change is Oswald. Everyone else is being wasted.

And this show could very we'll fail because too many people are trying to play it safe.

The other thing killing me is this show looks too polished. Too slick. Too tv.

This is supposed to be Gotham at its grittiest. And it visually doesn't reflect that. That in itself is a big fail.

you also have a very unique opinion on anything film/television related. (which I consider/respect when reading your posts)

but the ratio in here seems to be a very positive one. most people just want to be entertained. and most of us wont pick the show apart as long as its doing just that.

My career has no bearing on this show. Except maybe my opinion of how it looks.

I don't hate the show. I like it, I watch it. But I think they are vastly missing the mark and there are plenty of reviewers out there saying the same thing.

I do agree with Sarlacc. This show has HUGE potential. It has excellent lore but it seems the writing is kind of lazy or too direct at times. This show on like cable or HBO would be holy shit better.

Well I think you will be surprised with Edward. Clearly showing us that interaction with that girl meant something. He liked her. He wanted to help and ended up frustrating her.
We are going to see him slowly turn into a villain. That is the point of this show.

Bruce, I know it is not about him but watching that little boy become so interested in stopping crime anywhere he can is cool in my opinion. Gives a fun background to the dark knight.

Selina grabbed something, anyone that knows batman knows the love interest between Selina and Bruce. I cant wait to see that unfold.

I'm enjoying the show for what it is. Fills up a decent block on a Monday night. I dont watch much TV, just one show a night Sunday-Wednesday and a couple stupid reality shows sprinkled in like Knife Fight, Ink Master, that magic show was pretty cool too.

But like I said I dont watch much TV. My draw to Gotham is the nostalgia.

I also have a bit of a bias towards anything comic related, I am a big fan of most things DC (and marvel of course)

I have more issues with TWD.. and that's my favorite show period. I do whole-heartedly agree that it would be a better show on HBO.

I agree with Sarlacc too. Montoya is easily the most annoying...and I hate to say it, I find Bruce borderline annoying too as a character.

Generally speaking, I do enjoy Bullock as a character and hopefully, this week's episode starts a nice trend to seeing how he went from optimism to so much cynicism and crossing the line with even the mob...I would also prefer if it was not a flavor-of-the-week minor character each episode.

The Flash also seems to have similar issues...some annoying characters (i.e. the "sister"), the who needs a haircut...

Anyhow, just some gripes...no TV show is truly perfect, I suppose.

All you're stating is de facto stuff and it's being presented in an overly obvious in your face manner. There is no real build up. No mystery. Too much "hey you know this guy and where they end up so here they are!" The story is about Gotham pre-batman. Make it about that. Everything else that becomes batman lore is ancillary and should used lightly.

You're the audience that just likes eating the candy because it's sweet. No substance. The "nostalgia" is fake because it doesn't exist as the show is rewriting history.

LOL What I am stating is the appeal I find for it. Me, alone.
I'm not telling you why you should like it.

And I am unaware of any Batman lore predating Batman's martial arts training.. aside from his parents death. To my knowledge even Dark Knight "re-writes history" since it was never fact that the Joker killed the Waynes.

So to me, this is how it was. And it frankly works so far.

Haven't seen last night's episode so can't comment on it. But yeah, this show needs something to move it.

Fox is losing views left and right this season. Only shows on Fox I watch are Gotham and Sleepy Hollow. And Sleepy Hollow is starting to bore me.

ABC Shows Early Strength in Fall Ratings Race

Prime-Time Hits Like ‘Black-ish’ Put Network in Second Place in Entertainment Programming

The fall television season is barely out of the gate, but ABC has already earned some bragging rights.

Viewership is up 7% from last year, thanks in large part to two new prime-time shows—“Black-ish,” a comedy about the patriarch of an upper-middle-class African-American family who fears his children are too pampered, and “How to Get Away With Murder,” a drama about a controversial defense attorney.

That puts ABC, a unit of Walt Disney Co. , in second place in total viewers after CBS Corp. ’s namesake network, whose average audience for entertainment programming has risen 3% this season to 13.1 million viewers.

Comcast Corp.’s NBC, meanwhile, is down 4% in viewers at 10 million, and the audience for the Fox network, part of 21st Century Fox, is off 17% at 5.9 million.

Appears to be modernish times. I mean, there does not appear to be much talk of social media, Internet, and the tech seems more dated...but, it's not in the 1960s either.

It is in the past. Not far into the past but I'd say like the 80s maybe. Making Bruce Wayne take the roll of batman in earlier 2000 some 15 years after the Bruce we see now.

So maybe not the 70s but not current.

Designing Gotham: how the look and feel of Batman's home came to be | Television & radio | The Guardian

Designing Gotham: how the look and feel of Batman's home came to be

Television’s newest comic-book drama tells a familiar story in a city that’s at once familiar and foreign. In Fox’s Gotham, we watch a young pre-Batman Bruce Wayne and a slew of his villains coexist and form their identities in the web of crime and corruption that is Gotham City. Each scene is set in an old and new New York-ish world, a dramatic, timeless, gloomy city drained of its goodness and – quite literally – its sun.

“We are generally running from bright, beautiful, sunny days,” said the show’s production designer, Doug Kraner.

Kraner took some time to speak with the Guardian about the vision he created with the director Danny Cannon for Gotham, and how week after week they logistically expand their version of the city, one he hopes “fits comfortably in everybody’s mental image of this legend, which has existed for decades”.

.......

We believe that Gotham is kind of like New York was in the late 1970s and very early 80s, when the city was really at its roughest in recent history: before the subways were cleaned up, when crime was high, when the city just felt pretty brutal. We see Gotham as existing in that world.

But New York City has changed since then. It is really in many ways a much more optimistic and brighter place than it was in 1980. And we don’t want that! [Laughs.] So we look for the old New York as we scout, and sometimes we have to remove the new New York. Like, we’ll shoot on a street in Tribeca that 15 years ago would have been dark and scary, or in SoHo that 15 years ago would have been a little dangerous-looking. And we find ourselves putting the dangerous back in the street. We have to remove the nice topiaries in front of the lovely day spa. And we have to cover up the beautiful new bakery and coffee shop and replace it with the front end of an abandoned warehouse. So as we look, we try to get as close as we can. And if we can’t get there, we either fix it ourselves, or we fix it in post, digitally.

What we did not want was a contemporary ultra-realistic vision of this world – so we decided to definitely not embrace everything that is current. And those choices extend from everything to architecture, automobiles and cell phones. You’ll never see a smartphone in Gotham. Yes, the world exists somewhere between the late 70s and the mid-80s, but we try to let it float, because we want people to invest themselves and their own ideas of Gotham into our vision.

Her story with Barbara sucks...Actually Barbara is being wasted as a character and they are trying to give her something to do...she's nice eye candy with nothing really going on.

And yes, the Capt is an obnoxious character.

Yup...he is also a similar style killer in the Kevin Costner film 3 Days.

That said...we FINALLY got a great episode of Gotham. Aside from the cheesy scene with Bruce, which would have been better had they not gotten sloppy and mushy at the end, we finally started seeing characters, sorry arcs, plot lines paying off.

Well, if we are to get some semblance of the Penguin from the comics...we're seeing it unfold nicely now...how he's played his cards wonderfully and will likely end up on top of the mob heap.

This will not end well for Mrs. Will Smith.

Disappoint with Victor's use but at least he has the cuts. One of the better episodes. Penguin, Maroni, and Falcone are great villains. Had a feeling Carbone was going to bite it but thought Niko had more time. Oh well.

Read that Scarecrow is coming soon

Interesting! Well, if they use something similar to "Batman Begins", Crane had ties with Falcone and etc.

Interesting episode this week. I'm thinking Richard Sionis is related to Roman (the Black Mask)...?

Roman should be Bruce's age since based on the comics, they grew up together as kids...

My one gripe is how Barbara went from blindly trying to save her man to now suddenly, drinking lots and possibly breaking up? Seems rushed...and artificial.
