Say hello to our newest family member, Willie. He's about a year old, and I adopted him from the Humane Society on Tuesday. He's an orange tabby and very affectionate and inquisitive.

Some of you may have read in my tribute thread that my 17 1/2 year old cat Sam passed away a little over a month ago. We will never forget him, but he would have wanted me to help another kitty when I was able, and Willie is that guy. He's a lot smaller than Sammers, but the vet said he should grow and fill out in the next year.

In these pics, he's closely monitoring the activities of a big crow through our bedroom window.

Kudos for adopting. And especially a mature cat. He'll never replace Sammers, but I'm sure you know he'll become his own cat and just as important to you.

Have a long life Willie.

I know it's really hard right now, but it does get easier. Try to think about the good times you had with her. Maybe when you feel better you can think about adopting another dog who needs a good home.

Here's a recent one that I took of my pug Dodger that I had to post.

At times I think he gets jealous of A'zine.

"DUDE, A'ZINE AGAIN!! DON'T YOU EVER GET OFF THAT SITE!?!"

nice adoption! I always wanted to go that way, if I get a dog. Here's my cousin's dog, no idea what breed it is. Funny story, he just wandered into my cousin's store and stared at him for a while and stuck around, so my cousin took him home:

and my friend's corgis:

they were so when they were puppies. they were like giant cotton balls. Now they're just furry and not as playful and not as soft to hold.

Hi Dancer, I just saw your reply! to the face for me!

Willie is doing great and is pretty much completely settled in now and feeling much more comfortable in his new home. We had to deal with a few residual health issues, namely a lingering upper respitory tract infection and a nasty case of ear mites, but medications have largely taken care of those.

He's an energetic whirling dervish and a real kick in the pants to watch. Very athletic! He's also sweet and affectionate and a great guy to have around.

Thanks for the nice comment!

I'm so glad to hear it! My mom adopted 2 new kitties from the shelter just a short time before you brought Willie home. They had the same severe lingering URI's - it was awful. Happily, they're now bouncing off the walls (sometimes literally) and as happy as can be. It's been so rewarding to watch the transformation. Especially the little boy kitty, who behaves as though he was mistreated - he's finally becoming more trusting and affectionate. So good!

Ellie looks delighted with herself.

And I the name Tater Tot! My favorite mini in my old practice had that name - paired with his personality and overwhelming cuteness, he was the perfect little package of sass!

I'm happy to hear about your mom's cats! Kudos to her for adopting. I guess URI's are pretty common at shelters. The first time my wife and I heard him hacking it sounded like he was coughing up a lung. It was kind of a rasping, nasty cough and kind of scary. Thankfully it cleared up in about a week (he'd already been medicated at the shelter).

And I know all about bouncing off the walls. Willie is like a living pinball sometimes. You are so right about the whole process being rewarding. These little animals go through so much with either running away and becoming strays, or being cast away by their owners, then ending up in shelters, where they are scared and confused. It tears me up walking through the shelter and seeing those little faces. Adopting a dog or cat, bringing them home, then watching them transform in loving, irreplaceable family members is the best.
