I actually hate the facial hair and really wouldn't mind it gone... I haven't been interviewed yet by anyone, so I don't know if it's a declining factor... I've also had longish hair my entire life, if I cut it too much I'll look like a shaved poodle and it will give me permanent cowlics really bad...

I usually wear the John Ritter / Micheal J. Fox style...

Why am I explaining this?

Now, I've got that interview Thursday, we'll see how that goes... Once I have carried sone type of employment, I'll have references other than self-employed...

I found a few temp agencies, will check bigger agencies too... Just discovering all of this...

Don't wait until you are denied a job to decide to shave and get a haircut because you will have just missed out on a job. You don't have to go crazy, just look "clean" and dress better than you think the job requires. No one will fault you for being overdressed for an interview, but I guarantee you will be faulted for under-dressing every time.

What harm could come of it? You might get some good-natured ribbing, but you'll probably get some valuable feedback too.

Ok, but before I do, I want to say that if I cut my hair too short, it'll stand up like Alfalfa in places... I learned this 5 years ago when I cut it for ROTC and it, to this day, won't grow like it used to before cutting it... I hated myself for it and felt ike I commited treason on myself... For this, and several other reasons, was one of the lowest tines in my life...

The facial hair I care nothing about... But in my defense, I just saw a cashier with similar facial hair, so it shouldn't be a disqualifying factor...

Pretty good bet the cashier didn't have any facial hair when he applied for his job.

The thing is, for every job where the hair and whiskers will be okay, there will be four or more where it won't; do you really want to disqualify yourself from a potentially good job because or a little hair?

No. I’ll say, “I’m looking for someone with more experience.”, or “Sorry, stop back in when you get your GED.”

Heard any of those before?

Yeah man, have a shave and get a haircut.

You can keep it longish to keep the cowlicks in check, but get it cleaned up by someone who knows what they're doing. i.e. not dollar clips or jockcuts or wherever.

Quick thoughts on the car salesman thing...

If car savvy car salesmen were effective they would be in demand. But they are not. You can’t fight city hall.

But there are certainly technical sales careers that should be able to hold the interest of a car buff, just not so much in consumer automobiles. But you will almost certainly need a degree.

I usually make a good firts impression and people usually really like me and enjoy my company...

When I was in school, my teachers were my friends...

I barely remembering even finishing any assignments in my Spanish class, but somehow I passed with an A or B, what a mystery.......

In 8th grade, every teacher would tell me how badly they wanted me as a student, and all of my classmates admired me, when HS started, different story... I'd try to strike up a conversation and get shot down in a millisecond... I made a few acquaintances, but the only freindships I had was with my old people via email...

The pic of me in the tux was at my sisters wedding, my engine blew up a couple of hours before, lol!!!

I appreciate what you are saying...

But, does that really mean I can't try one day... Is it wrong to sell cars because I enjoy them?

Ok, so I have that interview tomorrow... I'm going as is, I'll feel it out bcause this is my first one...

Now I may have a competitive edge because the job description seems like it's geared toward Mexicans in the U.S. on a work visa, meaning my lifelong citizenship and being a life-long local (within 150 miles) gives me something to bring to the table...

This temp comany seems very concerned about me having my papers to work in the U.S. So, no problem there...

If I'm still having trouble, I may hit up my brother and have him call his friend that is like a regional manager over a major rental car company... He manages a lot of the southern states from what I hear... And my brother says that they're always needing people to wash and gas up the fleet...

Keeping my mind open...

And I have excellent speaking manners... I have an easy to understand, soft-spoken voice, and people usually think I'm a female over the phone... I use correct grammer, sirs/ma'ams and never use slang...

When I speak to someone, they notice that I am intelegent almost immediately... In theory, this should come in handy...

Thanks for the support so far, will keep y'all posted...

And I will be putting my hair up...

Yeah, I seriously think I should be on disability at times... I have OCD and DPD, so when I try to overcome part of it, the other part holds me back, it's a vicious cycle, and it's worse on the people around me...

No, I don't act like I have tourrete's, but I get anxiety easilly, kind of like my grandmother...

I hate being around children...

I have gotten used to eye-contact as it really means nothing, but for a long time, eye-contact was like someone shooting daggers in my eyes, like ecerything my mind knows would be read, and my thoughts would be hacked...

I start off slow, but can get rolling fast once in a conversation... A couple years ago, an older lady was driving a beater '98 Accord that had like 323K miles or something, and I got in a conversation with her about the RDX for like 10 mins, so I'm not too anti-social...

When it comes to business, all personal feelings get set aside...

But, in my personal time, I don't want to burden someone by trying to talk to them...

No, not wrong to try. Just saying... you will have a better chance at success and happiness if you align your desires and talents with the normal requirements of the job.

The car salesman's job isn't to have intimate, detailed product knowledge. It's to sell the car at the highest price you can and to upsell the dealer add-ons to maximize the dealer profit. Your commission will depend on that.

Midnight Mystery I don't know if this story will resonate with you or not...

Back in the summer of 1977 I was working as a janitor in a grocery store and working on cars to try and make enough money to keep myself in school. It was a living, but not much; I was about as poor as a church mouse. Anyway, at the time I had long hair down to the middle of my back, and while I don't remember all of the circumstances, I got some very nasty smelling gooey stuff in my hair which required me to pretty much cut it all off. Trust me, living in San Diego back then and having no hair made people treat me like I was one of the Hare Krishna cult members; not surprising I vowed to myself never to cut my hair short again.

Fast forward to fall of 1978, I was sick and tired of being poor and decided to try and get a better job; I started visiting employment agencies, and on one such visit they recruiter said, "I have a guy who wants to hire someone very quickly; will you see him now?" Naturally I said yes. I drove over to the interview and was shown into the interview immediately. The guy interviewing me, we'll call him "Bill", asked me what I'd been doing for the previous several years and then said, "I have a job I can offer you, however, you would need to cut your hair and shave; can you do that?"

I didn't think about for even two seconds, "Sure," I said.

He picked up the phone, made a call, and said, "Rudy, I'm sending a young man over to you right now, take good care of him." Bill then told me to walk across the street to the barber shop and let him do his magic; be back here in less than an hour, I have a plane to catch.

When I got back he surveyed the results and said, "Yup, you'll do very well." The job he offered me was for more than twice what I was making with my two gigs combined; they basically trained me for the new job and I paid them back with several years of good work before I moved on to another company.

A few months later Bill pulled me aside and said, "Ordinarily I would have asked someone like you a few questions and told them I'd get back to them in a week. However, since I was pressed for time I gave you a second chance by asking you if you were willing to cut your hair."

Here's something that just popped to mind...

1) think about what jerb you want.
2) go visit that type of place where people are doing that jerb.
3) look at what they look like: grooming, dress, mannerisms.
4) make yourself that.
