Sony may bite on Spidey spinoff

By Steven Zeitchik

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - With Heath Ledger's villainous Joker drawing attention and box office dollars, Sony is moving forward with "Venom," a potential "Spider-Man" spinoff based on a bad guy.

The studio is developing the project, based on the gooey nemesis who appeared in 2007's "Spider-Man 3" and is hoping the character could serve as an antidote to the aging "Spider-Man" franchise just as Fox has used Wolverine to add longevity to its "X-Men" franchise.

But getting any spinoff off the ground, let alone one centred on a villain, can be tricky.

The studio had commissioned a draft of the script from Jacob Estes, a writer of the specialty film "Mean Creek," released several years ago by Paramount Classics. But the studio is considering going in a different direction from Estes' script and is seeking writers for a new draft.

Casting also is no simple matter. Topher Grace of "That '70s Show" fame played the character in the film, but Sony is not yet convinced the actor can carry a big "tentpole" picture.

Neither Sony nor Marvel would comment for this story.

In "Spider-Man 3," Venom is essentially a parasite that attaches itself to a host via a sticky substance that then gives the host special powers. The fact that it is a substance rather than a character could give Sony leeway to cast a new actor.

"Venom" came about as part of the licensing deal between Marvel and Sony for the Spider-Man movies, which contained provisions allowing for the use of spinoffs based on other Spider-Man characters.

The project is part of a larger feeding frenzy for superhero projects, scores of which have been signed up in the last few months while movies such as "Iron Man" and "The Dark Knight" light up the box office.

Sony is developing a fourth "Spider-Man" film for 2011, but that picture would come out nine years after the original movie debuted, adding to the studio's desire to see new Marvel characters.

funny you mentioned that because i was watching spider-man 3 last night and kept :shakehead at the movie.

i dunno if it's raimi that just fawked up or hollywood that got in the way, but i just couldn't believe how bad it was compared to 2 and the momentum it built.

i've always liked venom, and i know hollywood has no problem with bringing comicbook characters from the dead. but it seems to me that the execs at sony are jumping the gun after TDK and Iron Man's successes.

i wish they'd just give the rights to marvel and let them do a proper 4th film.

3 was terrible, and venom was ruined by Topher IMO. Personally, I love venom, but please god, stop with the remakes and spinoffs!!!

i'd like to see carnage too.

but if i see carnage, i'd like to see it done properly, meaning it'll have to be rated R. don't think marvel would do that.

I don't think eddie was body builder. If I remember correctly, he was another photographic, just like peter parker.

yes and no.

he was a photographer by profession, but eddie brock was also a pretty big guy.

Due to Eddie Brock's muscular physique and natural physical strength from weight-training, his strength as Venom is superior to Spider-Man's, though he lacks Spider-Man's speed and reflexes.

That's what she said.

But, interesting movie premise...too bad they killed off the character in Part 3.

Tom Hardy Cast

From here: //www.comingsoon.net/movies/news/850579-breaking-tom-hardy-to-play-venom-ruben-fleischer-to-direct#Or3SeM8585Tt2sel.99

Quote:
Sony Pictures has officially signed Tom Hardy (Mad Max: Fury Road, Inception) to star as Eddie Brock in their upcoming Venom movie, with Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, Gangster Squad) to direct. Hardy previously played the DC Comics supervillain Bane in 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises, and will be seen this summer in Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk.

The studio also released a photo of the actor wearing a Venom T-shirt, and mentioned that he is a “huge fan of Venom”:

Venom will hail from Sony’s Marvel Universe of characters and will NOT be a spinoff of the current Marvel Cinematic Universe wherein Sony allows Spider-Man to be played by Tom Holland. Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach are producing along with Amy Pascal, with Palak Patel and Eric Fineman overseeing for Columbia Pictures.

Writers Scott Rosenberg (Pain & Gain, Jumanji) & Jeff Pinkner (The Amazing Spider-Man 2) will pen the script for the Venom film, which is set for an October 5, 2018 release date. Production will begin this fall.

First appearing in the comic book series as an alien costume worn by Spider-Man in Marvel‘s “The Amazing Spider-Man” #252 in 1984, it was several years before the creature left Peter Parker and merged with photographer Eddie Brock, forming the antihero known as Venom. Since then, the character has appeared in a variety of different forms and bonded with several different hosts. In the “Ultimate” Marvel Universe, the suit has a more terrestrial origin, created by Parker and Brock’s scientist parents in an attempt to cure cancer. More recently, the Venom symbiote has been moving between hosts, including Mac Gargan (aka The Scorpion) and Peter Parker’s old high school rival, Flash Thompson.

Venom previously appeared on the big screen, played by Topher Grace in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3. Since the release of that film in 2007, rumors have persisted about a solo Venom movie, but various iterations of the project have failed to materialize. Alex Kurtzman was set to direct a spin-off back in 2013, but he is no longer attached to the project.

Tom Holland’s Spidey can next be seen in Spider-Man: Homecoming, in theaters July 7. Sony Pictures Animation, meanwhile, is delivering a non-MCU animated Spider-Man movie on December 14, 2018, just two months after the new Venom movie release date.

Meh, I'm not big into comic book movies with the constant rebooting and over saturation, but I'll probably watch this one, have always loved the Venom character

Badly put together trailer? Trailer didn't make it look any good. Looks worse than a DC movie.
