Movie: Toy Story 4

Pixar is making 'Toy Story 4' | The Verge

Pixar is making 'Toy Story 4'

Toy Story is coming back for another installment, and original film director John Lasseter is on board to direct. The film will be released on June 16th, 2017. This is likely to be exciting, if trepidatious news for fans of Pixar and the series: Pixar has increasingly relied on sequels for big hits, while creating great new properties has been put on the back burner. It's likely that Pixar's move toward sequels is in part a result of being owned by Disney, which would rather see Pixar continue to mine its most successful properties — of which Toy Story is perhaps the biggest.

The story for this fourth film is being created by Lasseter alongside Lee Unkrich, the director of Toy Story 3, Pete Docter, the director of Up, and Andrew Stanton, the director of Finding Nemo — so this is truly coming from a team of Pixar all stars. They have also all worked on prior Toy Story films. The screenplay will be written by Rashida Jones, who has starred on Parks and Recreation and The Office, and Will McCormack, who previously wrote Celeste & Jesse Forever alongside Jones. Galyn Susman, who has been producing Toy Story shorts for Pixar, is producing the film too.

"We love these characters so much; they are like family to us," Lasseter says in a statement. "We don’t want to do anything with them unless it lives up to or surpasses what’s gone before. Toy Story 3 ended Woody and Buzz’s story with Andy so perfectly that for a long time, we never even talked about doing another Toy Story movie. But when Andrew, Pete, Lee, and I came up with this new idea, I just could not stop thinking about it. It was so exciting to me, I knew we had to make this movie — and I wanted to direct it myself."

Regardless of your feeling about Pixar's sequels, having Lasseter on board is a great sign. Lasseter's one of the major forces responsible for Pixar's dominance in animation and high quality story telling — same goes for Disney's resurgence in making well-received films. He's currently both Disney and Pixar's chief creative officer, and he previously directed both the first and second Toy Story films.

Even before today, Pixar hadn't really retired the Toy Story characters. It's brought them back for a pair TV specials and a number of short films, which have been generally well liked. Those specials have been following the toys under their latest owner, which is where one would expect to see them in this fourth film.

But even so, it's still not entirely clear where we should expect to see the group of toys come 2017. The series has progressed in somewhat close to real time, with the original trilogy having the toys' owner grow from a boy in 1995 to a college-bound teen in 2010. If that's the case, the toys' latest owner may have aged close to seven years by the time Toy Story 4 rolls around. There are no plot details just yet, however, and it may be a good bit of time before we find out exactly what's happening here.

Between now and Toy Story 4, we know of at least three other Pixar films. Next year will see both Inside Out and The Good Dinosaur, and 2016 will have the Finding Nemo sequel Finding Dory. That would mean two new properties next year, followed by two years of sequels to beloved properties. Of the four movies, Inside Out is the only one that we really know a good bit about yet: Pixar released a first teaser for it last month, and it's hard not to see it as following in the footsteps of classics like Monsters, Inc.

Maybe it's because 3 wasn't directed by John Lasseter like 1 and 2 were?

I've enjoyed them all, but yeah 1 and 2 were just somehow better.

Hoping John Lasseter pulls it off again with 4.

I liked 3 much more than 2. Maybe it's because we have it DVR'ed and I have seen it 50 times in the past year, but two seemed more boring. My only complaint with 3 is Tim Allen's lines seemed forced quite a few times.

In any case,

1 and 2 were classics, but 3 managed to still be a good film. So, not really sure why or how they plan to follow the perfect tug-at-the-strings ending in 3, but with this being Pixar, I'm intrigued.

Pixar Animation to make 'Toy Story 4' - LA Times

Pixar Animation is returning to its most successful franchise, "Toy Story," for a fourth movie, to be directed by the studio's chief creative officer, John Lasseter.

Walt Disney Co., which owns Pixar, said Thursday during an earnings call that the latest incarnation of "Toy Story" will be released June 16, 2017.

Lasseter told The Times that "Toy Story 4" will be a love story and will pick up where "Toy Story 3" left off, when Woody, Buzz Lightyear and the rest of the series' toy chest of characters were handed down to a little girl named Bonnie.

Sort of explains the how, but not why the need at all.

The way 3 ended was absolutely perfect, IMO; that 15 year gap between 1-3 was movie gold at providing closure for anyone who remembered watching the 1st & immediately relate to Andy growing up in that large time-frame.

The ending saved 3 from potentially tarnishing the series. 4 could be a great film, but is has a huge chance of just looking like a spin-off trying to follow the trilogy.

I knew this would happen once they got absorbed by the Disney giant. I don't think Disney has had a great, original idea since 1998 or so.

I was just about to say...

Frozen was LONG overdue. It is everything Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, etc. are to Disney's empire--a true fairy tale aimed for young girls with a real plot, morals, fantasy, and modern comedy to boot. It was really good to see them revisit the foundation that built the franchise.

True, true. I'd forgotten about that. 'Frozen' was very good.

Woody has always been confident about his place in the world and that his priority is taking care of his kid, whether that’s Andy or Bonnie. But when Bonnie adds a reluctant new toy called “Forky” to her room, a road trip adventure alongside old and new friends will show Woody how big the world can be for a toy. Directed by Josh Cooley (“Riley’s First Date?”) and produced by Jonas Rivera (“Inside Out,” “Up”) and Mark Nielsen (associate producer “Inside Out”), Disney•Pixar’s “Toy Story 4” ventures to U.S. theaters on June 21, 2019.

Billed as a 'teaser' but shows nothing apart from the new 'character'

That looks better than the first trailer.

But its the fourth movie movie in a row where a toy gets lost and it’s all about getting them back.

Kids are going to love Forky. I think think it's genius, giving kids a character that they could make themselves. If you have friends with little kids, be prepared for the Facebook onslaught of Forky's.
