Movie: The Predator

Yep, Hollywood is planning a ‘Predator‘ reboot. That shouldn’t come as a surprise. What should come as a surprise is the man who has been hired to bring the project to life: Shane Black, the infamous screenwriter and director who already has a unique attachment to this franchise.
The Hollywood Reporter broke the news and report that Black will pen a treatment for the film and oversee the writing of the screenplay before stepping behind the camera. The script itself will be written by Fred Dekker, who co-wrote ‘The Monster Squad’ with Black back in 1987.
‘Predator’ is, of course, the story of a deadly alien who travels to Earth to hunt soldiers for sport in the jungles of South America before meeting his match in one particularly deadly mercenary (played by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the original film). Black played a small role in the film (he’s the shrimpy guy who gets killed first) and, according to which version of the story you’re told, may have helped fix the screenplay on set.
It’s unknown how closely, or if at all, the new film will stick to that template. It would even be easy for Black to create a “remake” that’s completely different than the original, suggesting that it’s more of a sequel than a clean start. Frankly, though, we’re on board no matter what he does. He only directed two films — the hugely under-seen but beloved ‘Kiss Kiss Bang Bang’ and the smart, crafty ‘Iron Man 3‘ — but he’s the real deal. You don’t become the highest paid screenwriter in Hollywood without learning a trick or two.
Black is also hard at work developing ‘Doc Savage‘ (a take on the legendary pulp adventurer) and ‘The Nice Guys’ (a crime movie starring Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe). Whichever one of these projects comes together first is anyone’s guess.
In any case, whatever Black cooks up will be better than the fascinating but awful ‘Predator 2′ and the lifeless ‘Predators,’ but will it come close to touching the original film? Eh, probably not. Still, it’s a Shane Black movie. It should be worth watching.

It's going to be hard to beat the first one. That is a benchmark for action movies...even today.

Probably just about nobody believed that 2010′s Predators would be the last time that we’d see the eponymous extraterrestrial hunters on the big screen, but yesterday brought the unexpected news that Shane Black (Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, Iron Man 3) has been recruited to direct a Predator reboot. Whether you were excited by the prospect of Black putting his unique spin on the 1980s property or infuriated by the idea of the original cherished 1987 film (an action/sci-fi/horror hybrid) getting re-imagined and/or remade, we have an update on the situation that you ought to take note of.

The original reports specifically stated that Black and screenwriter Fred Dekker (who previously collaborated on Monster Squad) are working on a Predator reboot together, which everyone took to mean that the sci-fi/action franchise will be starting completely over, with this new installment. Not so, though, as Black has informed Collider that his currently-untitled Predator movie is, in fact, a sequel – an “inventive sequel” at that – which shall not simply discard the pre-established Predator mythos.

Here’s the quote that Black gave to Collider, regarding his and Dekker’s Predator film:

“[It's not a reboot] as far as Fred and I are concerned anyway. Why start over, when you’ve all this rich mythology yet to mine? [However, I can] really get behind inventive sequels [and] the idea of expanding and exploring the existing Predator mythology, rather than hitting the restart button.”

Question is, what exactly do Black and Dekker count as part of the “existing Predator mythology”? It could be that the plan is to be selective and draw inspiration from certain key elements in previous Predator movies – be they the first two straight-forward installments, the Alien vs. Predator franchise crossovers, and/or the Predators film - without creating blatant story contradictions. If so, then Black’s Predators movie may be comparable to the upcoming Jurassic World, which doesn’t break continuity with previous Jurassic Park installments – yet, has been pitched as something of an “inventive sequel” itself.

How The Predator Will Solidify The Series' Complicated Continuity, According To Shane Black - CINEMABLEND

Rumor is Arnold may be back, not sure about Danny Glover... Possibly The Rock taking over the mantle as the lead.

While there certainly is a timeline to follow in the Predator franchise, continuity has never exactly been the series’ thing. All of the movies have centered around completely different human and alien characters, and as a result nothing really binds them together beyond all having the same badass looking creature. That’s something that Shane Black’s upcoming The Predator will look to fix, as the filmmakers behind the project are actively looking for connections that can strengthen the continuity.

I recently had the pleasure of talking with Shane Black over the phone about his brand new film The Nice Guys, and it was at the very end of the chat that we discussed his work on the next chapter of the Predator franchise. Discussing the fact that the previous movies have been all over the map in terms of world-building, but confirmed that it will be a story set in the year its released – 2018 – and will have tie backs to John McTiernan’s original movie from 1987. Said Black,

"The trick is to go back in time and look at the other earlier films and say, for instance, in the first movie, what is there? Is there a scene in here that suggests something that we can almost in retrospect say, ‘See, it was set up in the first one!’? How do we find that little niche?"

When you think about how modern franchises work, this is most definitely a great approach. The reason why cinematic universes have become popular is because fans have grown to respect efforts to create complex and smart continuities with recurring characters, themes and ideas. This is something that’s never really been a part of the Predator legacy, but it certainly makes sense to introduce it with The Predator.

As fans know, Shane Black has a funny history with the Predator franchise, as he was actually an actor in the original movie. Back in 1986, 20th Century Fox pursued him about doing a pre-production rewrite of the film, which was an offer that he turned down. The studio came back to him with an offer to actually play a part in the feature – the role of ‘Hawkins’ – which he accepted . When he touched down on the set, however, Fox once again pressed for him to work on the script – but he still said no.

In case you couldn’t tell, The Predator is still currently in its scripting stage, as filming isn’t set to pick up until the back portion of this year. Once things get rolling, however, it’s probably going to be a sizable production, all heading towards the movie’s scheduled release date on March 2, 2018.

Aaaand I already have low hopes

https://io9.gizmodo.com/cast-of-pred...fir-1792557324

The Predator director Shane Black celebrated the first day of filming by giving us a glimpse at our plucky young killers, plus the adorable kid who might be the key to saving us all.

Details are being kept tightly under wraps for The Predator. The only thing we have confirmed is that Jacob Tremblay, the kid from Room, is playing the son of Holbrook, an ex-Marine who discovers the violent aliens. A previous report from The Hollywood Reporter said Tremblay’s character was autistic and could help fight “due to his preternatural ability to learn languages.” However, that’s been removed from the article, so either his character’s being changed, or that wasn’t supposed to be revealed yet. We also know it will be rated R (surprise surprise) because, as Black put it:

In the meantime, revel in how cool these guys look. The cast includes Trevante Rhodes (Moonlight), Sterling K. Brown (The People v OJ Simpson), Olivia Munn (X-Men: Apocalypse), Keegan-Michael Key (Key and Peele), and Thomas Jane (The Expanse). I’m especially digging Munn and Key, who look ready to ambush the camera with their fierceness. The Predator is set to come out February 2018. ()

Keegan Michael Key? Isn't he a comedian? And Olivia Munn is just..... no. I'd pay to see this on opening day if it was promised to me that she gets killed off in a gruesome way. Of course I'm sure her character makes it out alive. I'm making a bet right now that the movie ends with Munn + the kid being the sole survivors.

and wtf @ the kid, too.

Olivia Munn is a badass.

I wish the cast was a little more roided out pumped with add'l sessions of TRT (a la 80s)
but I have hopes and dreams, that'll probably be crushed.. but what's new.

Ehh... trailer is kind of underwhelming

Smug guy being interrogated, people reloading guns, stuff 'splodin. I guess it's all typical trailer material but it definitely doesn't get me excited.

So there's a super predator, or a predator hybrid created by the predators? I'm confused.

The whole series went so far up its own ass with all the different variations of Predator sub-species to where I just lost almost all interest in the series beyond the first film.
