This movie doesn't seem targeted for kids. Of course the original fans of the series are in their thirties now, so maybe it will be marketed to them.

I don't give a crap about Pokemon (I was already too old when this started) but this movie looks like just a fun time for even the people like me who know nothing about that world.

Detective Pikachu’s ‘full movie’ upload on YouTube is a super effective troll

May 7, 2019

Pokémon Detective Pikachu has been uploaded in its entirety to YouTube, just days before the movie hits theaters — or so Warner Bros. would have you think. What appears to be a rogue account uploading all 102 minutes of the live-action Pokémon movie and ruining its box office chances is instead a fantastic marketing stunt that’s also very much worth watching.

The YouTube video — “POKÉMON Detective Pikachu: Full Picture” — was uploaded on Tuesday by a user named Inspector Pikachu, who also tweeted it out. Actor Ryan Reynolds, who voices Pikachu in the film, then retweeted it.

It doesn’t take long for the joke to pay off here. After logos for Warner Bros. Pictures, Legendary, and The Pokémon Company fade out, the movie cuts to Ryme City. Protagonist Tim Goodman walks alone through the city streets before something grabs his attention: It’s Pikachu. It’s Pikachu dancing. It’s Pikachu dancing on loop for about 100 minutes. In all, there’s about 32 seconds of actual Detective Pikachu film footage in here.

You may not want to stick around for the full hour-and-40-minute dance session, but it’s worth watching for a spell to remind yourself that the fuzzy Pikachu of Detective Pikachu is extremely good.

‘Pikachu’ Has Strong Opening but Can’t Defeat ‘Avengers’

May 12, 2019

Hollywood’s first serious attempt to unseat “Avengers: Endgame” atop the box office made a valiant effort over the weekend, but the superhero sequel still kept the No. 1 spot with a third-week haul of $63.1 million.

Warner Bros.’ “Pokémon Detective Pikachu”—the first big-budget studio release since “Endgame” began its record-setting run three weeks ago—collected a respectable $58 million in second place.

. . .

. . .

“Pikachu,” produced by Legendary Pictures and based on the Japanese videogame Pokémon, features the voice of Ryan Reynolds as Pikachu and cost about $150 million to produce. Its overseas grosses put the movie’s global total at a healthy $170 million, with nearly $41 million coming from China, the world’s second-largest box-office market.

“Pikachu” is outperforming other recent videogame adaptations, which have routinely flopped at the box office. Recent attempts include “Warcraft,” “Assassin’s Creed” and last year’s “Tomb Raider” reboot.

Disney’s dominance at the box office will likely create a similar dynamic in the years to come. Once Disney announces the release date of one of its major franchise titles, other studios will strategize around that debut to avoid going head-to-head with a Marvel or Star Wars installment.

Though a videogame adaptation and a comic-book adaptation might seem like movies that attract the same audiences, Mr. Goldstein said “Pikachu” pulled in a younger crowd than “Avengers.” Opening-weekend audiences gave it an “A-” grade, according to the CinemaScore market research firm.

My kid loved it, was naming the pokemon outloud in the theater. I thought the plot was somewhat dumb, but I'm not the target audience

Its detective noir for kids. Almost looks like Blade Runner (original)

I really liked it.

Took the family to see this yesterday. I’m admittedly slow catching on when it comes to stories, so I didn’t see the plot twist coming at the end at all. However, I’m not sure knowing what I know how if the plot holds up.

In any case, it’s a good PG/Y7 movie. The plot developed well, and the production was good. The mime was my favorite part.
