XF-108

Mach 3+ fighter equipped with fire and forget Mach 6 missiles.

Cancelled in 1959, many of its components were used in later planes.

there is an air show that goes on in Rockford IL, that I failed to visit in the past. Now I think they are not doing it anymore due to lack of funding.

Thanks, I had the privilege to go with a few DoD friends to the Armed Forces Day on Friday which is restricted to DoD personnel and their friends. It was great since the crowd was ~1/10 of the public weekend crowd. Talked to some of the air crew and ground crew, all friendly and very knowledgable.

BTW, love that video especially the commercial aircraft in flight. Cool to see the inboard ailerons working on the 777

The AWG-9 radar and AIM-54 missile used in the F-14 were derived from the F-108 and YF-12 work.

The North American Cincinnati group which did most of the F-108 airframe design and development used alot of it's concept in the Navy A-5 attack jet which adapted into the versatile RA-5C recon jet. A-5 below, you can see alot of similarity.

Same here, the Bone just looks cool.

With alot of upgrade and improvement programs it's now a excellent offensive platform. Didn't realize they got the ops cost per hour to be below even a B-52.
