My friend lent me a DVD called Metal: A Headbanger's Journey. Nice history about metal and great interviews with RJ Dio, Bruce Dickinson (singer of Iron Maiden), Tony Iommi (guitarist from Black Sabbath), Tom Araya (singer from Slayer), Dee Snider (Twisted Sister), and many more. Definitely check it out.

The lead singer of Madball came on stage and sang the chorus to A Life Once Lost's song "Vulture." It was INSANE! The best show of the night was As I Lay Dying for sure, and this was back before they mainstreamed their sound.

Any takers on these:

Death metal: pre-Chaos AD Sepultura, pre-Wolverine Blues Entombed, Nile, Bolt Thrower, Six Feet Under, Napalm Death, Obituary, Deicide, Unleashed.

NYHC: Pro-Pain, Biohazard, Madball,

Y'all hit most of the great regular metal bands (off the top of my head). What about Down, Nailbomb (I know, side project, but still), Revielle, Stuck Mojo, SOD, Cathedral, Testament, Entombed, King Diamond?
Have heard of a lot of those...have every Down song ever made

Anybody like Superjoint Ritual, Crowbar, Corrosion of Conformity, Coal Chamber, Devildriver, Assjack... (always feel like I'm forgetting a bunch when I list some out)

Pretty much anything Phil Anselmo makes

Didn't like Superjoint Ritual's first CD, never bothered after that ...then again, I didn't like Pantera's last one, either.

I've always liked CoC...very unique sound, in my opinion. And they're from here, well, Raleigh, but still NC...not many bands from NC, so we claim what we can .

And I always leave somebody out when listing bands. What can I say, the memory ain't what it used to be .

Cheesy as it sounds, the video game Brutal Legend has a great soundtrack with over 100 metal songs spanning the various genre's...it's pretty cool.

How about Accept, Annihilator, Emporer, Brujeria, or Type O Negative?

I found my Pantera Trendkill 97 shirt digging through my dresser. Can't believe that was 13 years ago.

I agree, Reinventing the Steel was not their best work although I wouldn't say I don't like it. You can tell the focus wasn't there. I personally like SJR's second album better, might be worth checking out.

I like all the styles CoC uses, although I admit I don't own all of their stuff. America's Volume Dealer is my personal favorite.

I was looking at the playlist for that video game...definitely impressive, and the guy is modeled after Lemmy! Saw a couple Mastodon songs on there, one I left off my list. And Metal Church...my uncle used to have that on tape when I was a kid and I thought it was the coolest thing ever

My brother-in-law is around your age and has shown me a lot of his old stuff...where I first heard a lot of Type O Negative back in the day. We take his old CDs out on my boat and sit around drinking beer

Never like that movie too much. Hated that androgynous Hot Topic girl(?) they interviewed.

btw iirc didn't they put Cradle of Filth under "Norwegian Black Metal" ? Yeah, Norwegian band from the UK, nice.

I can't find a pic online so I'll snap one later when it is out of the wash. It is pretty much brand new. Although I've started wearing it a lot more now.

Slightly off topic from metal, but stick with me here. I've been forced to listen to Christmas music at work for the last 3 weeks which is slowly driving me insane. The only saving grace to it all is they have been playing a lot of the Trans Siberian Orchestra. They do a reworked version of Pachelbel's Canon in D with some Christmassy lyrics added (I know, it's getting even further from Metal, hold on it's getting back to topic). What I've noticed is the guy who plays guitar for them can really rip it up when he wants to so I spent some time trying to figure out who this band was (I didn't know it was TSO at first) and who there guitarist was. So as it turns out, there was a reason this guy sounded familiar to me, it's Al Pitrelli formerly of Alice Cooper and maybe better known as Marty Friedman's replacement in Megadeth. So if you need some Xmas music with it's roots in metal, check them out.

I haven't been to any shows lately, last band I saw was Rush back in August. That was one awesome show though, they really know how to play live!

Saw this show too. Freaking epic. Day after I saw Megadeth/Slayer/Anthrax and my ears are still ringing.

Anyone going to the tour with Godsmack, Disturbed, and Megadeth? Yeah I know Godsmack and Disturbed are nu metal but Megadeth is my fave metal band so I might see them again and they had a ton of other acts.

Most likely, they're coming here July 20th. I've seen all three at different times, but never at the same concert or at this venue.

Gonna be hot as hell I'm sure...hopefully Megadeth and Disturbed are the last two and go at night, but I have a feeling it will go Megadeth -> Godsmack -> Disturbed. I wouldn't be that sad to miss Godsmack.

So I've been waiting patiently the past few years for Down to have a show somewhere near me, but they've pretty much been on hiatus only doing a handful of shows a year, mostly international. I just checked again:

* 4/28/11 - New York, NY
* 4/29/11 - Philadelphia, PA
* 4/30/11 - Sayreville, NJ
* 5/02/11 - Nashville, TN
* 6/11/11 - Donington, UK
* 6/18/11 - Bilbao, Spain

Would've been a nice weekend trip to Nashville, with Down playing on a Monday night. But no, I have a final the next day

I haven't completely dismissed the idea, so we'll see.

The more I think about it, the more I think it's gonna happen. Need to find somebody to go with though that can be off that weekend and Monday and Tuesday.

The little lady is a nurse and has an adjustable schedule, so I might drag her to it if I have to :devilgrin

Haarp & Ponykiller are opening up for them...don't think I've heard of 'em.

Down is an American heavy metal supergroup that formed in 1991 in New Orleans, Louisiana. The band's most current lineup consists of vocalist Phil Anselmo (Pantera, Superjoint Ritual), guitarists Pepper Keenan (Corrosion of Conformity) and Kirk Windstein (Crowbar), bassist Rex Brown (Pantera), and drummer Jimmy Bower (Eyehategod).

Since its inception, Down has released three studio albums, NOLA (1995), Down II: A Bustle in Your Hedgerow (2002); and Down III: Over the Under (2007). Down is currently working on "Down IV" which will be released in 2011.

Start with NOLA, then move on to their next two albums. Also check out the member's other bands if you haven't heard of them (which I hope to the Metal Gods you have).

Consider this to be an epiphany for you

Unfortunately our local radio sucks for rock. Either classic, grunge, or popular nu metal. Not that they're metal but I just discovered Muse who I love like 2 years ago and nobody down here plays them and few know them. It's all trance and crappy hip hop here. Mind you I loved hip hop but not the radio stuff. Ain't no Ghostface on the radio.

She's checking up on her schedule. Final isn't until later the next day so I'll just make her drive home while I sleep (only 4 hours)

Can't pass up a good chance to party it up in Nashville for a weekend, plus we were already talking about going...place is awesome.

One thing that sucks is that Rex won't be there, he's busy with his other projects for now, but whatever. Looks like a damn good show to me!

I hear ya, same stuff up here. Same loop of stuff gets played out over and over.

Thank god I have 16 gigs of music on my phone and can plug it into my car stereo. I like all types of music, and most of it has never been on the radio. I typically discover bands by what members of other groups are involved in, and their opening acts.

For example, grew up listening to Pantera, discovered Down and Superjoint Ritual through Phil Anselmo, found Crowbar and Corrosion of Conformity through Down, etc...

I really think you would like them though

^I hate you!!!

Damn I tried to win Iron Maiden tix. Actually got through but wasn't #6 or whatever. I saw their setlist from previous shows and half of it was their later stuff that I'm not to into so I didn't buy seats. Still will be a good show.

I haven't seen MAIDEN in a few years but that night they played everything that they are well known for.

I can't wait for the BIG 4!!! Just a few more days! I'm a big LAMB OF GOD fan and it would've been awesome if they were also on the bill and called it the BIG 4 1/2 or the BIG 5!

Man Black Tide opened for Maiden. Would've liked to hear Warriors of Time and Shockwave

LOL WEBN around Cincy blows. I'll stick to CDs in the car and iPod elsewhere.

I can't get enough of this song. I swear I've listened to it at least a hundred times in the past couple months and I never get sick of it:
