I think so far we know it's only one ticket. Which could be part of a office pool or group....but if it was one person/family?

One $425 million jackpot-winning ticket was sold for Tuesday's Mega Millions drawing in New York, according to the New York Lottery.

The ticket was sold on Long Island at Brookville Auto Service Shop in Glen Head. The New Year's Day drawing was the eighth largest jackpot in the history of the game. The cash option for the jackpot is $254.6 million.

Tuesday's winning numbers were 34, 44, 57, 62, and 70. Mega Ball was 14.

Hopefully it's someone who is actually taking their time to plan it out. There was a theory going around that the winner is waiting deliberately until 2019 to save some 2018 taxes....but we'll see.

Or the ticket could be lost in some trash/under some couch somewhere.....

Heh dang. Looks like a working man gets a big break.

He's happy but hopefully he's prepared for the HUGE onslaught of mail/phone call and harassment that will start and not cease for many years......

Still not claimed

https://www.10news.com/news/national...ed-ticket-lost

SIMPSONVILLE, S.C. (AP) – Nearly everyone in this small South Carolina town has a theory for the city’s billion-dollar mystery: Who won the $1.5 billion Mega Millions jackpot announced last October?

Maybe the winner was so overwhelmed upon seeing the winning numbers that she or he died on the spot? Maybe the winner is on the run from police and fears a background check? Maybe that winning ticket fell from a car visor, ended up in a trash can and is forever buried at the Twin Chimneys Landfill. Or maybe, the winner is still going on with life as usual, before quietly taking the $878 million lump sum.

With less than two months to go, the clock is ticking. Whoever won the second largest lottery in U.S. history has until 5 p.m. on April 19 to walk into the South Carolina Lottery office in Columbia with the signed ticket and claim the jackpot.

The winner of the 1.5B jackpot came forward and claimed the prize. SC allows the winner to make the claim and remain anonymous, which is wisely what they did. I'm not sure this is what they did, but I have now added a new bullet item to my mega-jackpot winner checklist, If you win a massive jackpot, immediately change your residence to a state that allows anonymous claims.

Im no tax genius so correct me if Im wrong. MA doesnt allow you to be anonymous so if I got the lucky ticket in MA then changed my residence to SC I would have to pay taxes is both states. Correct?

MA - because thats where the ticket was sold
SC - Income tax

ps.... none of this probably matters as its most likely your residency at the time of purchase

It's like asking if you move, is your previous state going to tax your ass on money you made in your new state.

That being said.. NC allows you to be anonymous.. but you need to pay 7% on lottery winnings.. MA is 5%

No tax in Texas and you can claim anonymously

New Jersey is 10.8%, but they tax you to breathe there.
I think they tax your ass for moving too.

Ok here an different way of asking it. If I live in MA buy the ticket in MA, then move to NH because they have no income tax - I would still have to pay MA taxes on that ticket right?

Not worried about taxes. Privacy is invaluable, especially when dealing with $xxx,000,000.

I wonder if you can set up a trust, transfer ownership of the unclaimed ticket to the trust, then have a legal rep of the trust claim the winnings on behalf of the trust?

Pretty sure you have to claim the lottery winnings in the state you bought the ticket in.

So moving wouldn’t get you off the hook if your states lottery doesn’t allow you to claim anonymously.

Yeah think it's where the ticket was sold, doesn't matter if you move afterwards.

Otherwise it would entirely defeat the purpose of lotto/income tax for a state. Everyone who wins that much could easily move to a no tax state and THEN claim the ticket and the state loses on millions in revenue...

Oh yeah. When you win that much....get ready for daily phone calls/mails and letters/potential emails/stalkers-in-person begging for money. It's pretty scary what you have to deal with when you win that much....even if you try to stay anonymous.....gonna be tough to fend off all the people.....

Originally Posted by stogie1020 View Post

Think it depends on the state. I would try to setup a LLC or some corporation so I still have my own control but try to keep anonymous still....I'd be too paranoid about whomever is in charge of the trust to handle all of my money....

oh yeah for sure.

Immediately get new phone, new email, get PO box, sign lease for new apt in completely new/random state, only give out new info to 1 or 2 super trust worthy ppl (if that)
book 1mo resort in bora bora or hop around remote islands for a while, work remotely with lawyer/financial team, chillax and enjoy
come back to live at new address, slowly move things/stuff to new address or hire mover to remotely move (if possible), move important contacts to new info (bank, insurance, etc.), screen/discard all non-solicited mail/calls/etc.

lot of the condo owners in my building bought the units under a private LLC...when I try to look up public tax records to see who lives in my building...lot of them are "OCEAN WAVE LLC" and stuff like that....prolly another level of privacy also
