I never eat udon. Ever. Just don't eat noodles very often to begin with.

But I ate at marukame udon twice in two days... that curry udon was so good. No lines either later in the afternoon (weekday)

It's great. I would go there more often if it wasn't so far from honolulu.

Man, wish I knew more secret spots, so to speak. I met an older lady when I was exploring around the spitting caves of portlock and she told me about the toilet bowl near hanauma bay and how to access it without getting caught. quite interesting......

haha same here. We ate there twice in two days straight. Line not too long if you get there early early lunch or before dinner on weekdays. We had to voluntarily stop going too often cause I was gaining way too much weight.....way too tasty but very bad for the belly/waist line....

I'll say this, their quality has gone down quite a bit since they started boxing mochi ice cream and shipping it worldwide. I just bought a couple boxes a couple weeks ago and the mochi tasted like cardboard.

From a purely annual income perspective...yes it is quite the sweet gig. As I've posted before (though not everyone may be aware) I'm a shrink doing a temp contract for a clinic that is short staffed and get paid on a 1099 basis, so the hourly rate is high compared to other psychiatrists on a regular job but there's no additional benefits (ie, no paid vacation, health insurance or retirement). The pay is in general 20-30% higher for this type of work but my clinic can also basically fire me with 30 day notice if they find a permanent doc to replace my position. So most docs don't do this all the time, but for short time or if they just want to travel around. The temp agency that manages also helps to pay for housing, rental car, and flight to/fro the work assignment. I have like 300+ days of National car rental accrued....so that's nice. And of course get to live in hawaii on a subsidized basis with this kind of salary is incredible and I don't forget how lucky/fortunate I am to be in my position.

Main thing is location and housing cost/taxes. Friends/family all are back in KC area. Amazon prime is useless and certain services are not as convenient out in the islands and of course hard to take a short weekend trip to see buddies the next state over.

Also I'm basically trying to pay off med school loans in the next 2 years so I can debt free asap...so most of my income is going to Uncle Sam and the US Department of Education. I took care of about 60k of debt last year and this year I'll be having a whole year of earning at this salary level so hopefully I'm aiming to clear away another 100k this year and then similar amount next year.

Having a job in a no-income tax state will get me debt free just a bit faster so I FINALLY start to enjoy some luxuries in life like a nicer car and plan for home ownership....

I get bubbies mochi ice cream from Foodland in ala moana, across from my condo, they have a little station and it's not bad. But sometimes I get pieces seem pretty hard/rubbery on the outside....

In Hilo, we always go to Two Ladies Kitchen, amazing mochi.

Pretty sad that HUD recently released a report stating that if you make 40K/year in Hawaii thats considered "Very Low" income.

And if you make 65K/year thats considered "Low" income.

thats catching up to San Francisco levels!

A 2-3 year old 535i is like 30k
That's what.. a 400-500 monthly payment depending on down payment and interest rate.
Most people could afford that, even if they can't afford much more.

I like that McDonald's in Hawaii still sells fried pies unlike the baked shit they sell on the mainland.

I used to love the fried apple pies when I was a kid and HATED when they switched to the baked shit

Talking about McDs.. I never knew what came out from that haole fakka who killed that young man at McDs..
He was a federal agent, piece of shit should be in jail. If I remember the guy confronted the locals like.. you talk that way you're going to get shot.
Fighting spirit of Hawaii, don't give a fuck. You want shoot me, shoot me then. Fuck that asshole.

It went to trial 2 times already, deadlocked first trial because only Murder 1
Then trial 2 innocent of Murder 1 and deadlocked on Manslaughter
He should at minimum get Manslaughter.. fuck that asshole.

They're pushing for 3rd trial. Hopefully the right jurors are picked for this one.

The guy is so stupid to confront someone with a gun on him and threaten them that if they act out they can get shot.
What a fucking imbecile. Guy had no jurisdiction, wasn't even on duty. He just thinks he has the right to be authoritative.
Then when he escalates it, he hits the eject button. Fuck that guy, he deserves to be dragged through hell the rest of his life.

I like this. I got so many points with southwest.

SWA plans to fly out of Oakland, Sacramento, San Jose and San Diego to Hawaii.

Hawaiian Airlines shares tumble after Southwest plans 'low fares' between islands

Finally, HA will get some competition here. Too bad I'll be out of the state before SWA starts their inter-island service.

OTOH, new surface lava flow/eruption from the Kilauea east rift zone is occurring in the Puna area:
4th Kilauea eruption from new fissure confirmed in Leilani Estat - Hawaii News Now - KGMB and KHNL

Too bad it looks like it may not go into the ocean as an ocean entry....safety and local lives first.....then prepare for the hordes of tourists!!!

Felt some tremors here.

6.9 magnitude earthquake right in that area. People at my clinic, here in honolulu, felt slight shaking.

2 homes damaged it seems....lots of erupting vents and lava is flowing.....!!

Yup. 10 eruption sites/active fissures and 9 homes destroyed they are reporting.

Mother nature scary.

As long as there's no ash cutting off flight lines, you'll be fine
I'd totally go big island right now though

Yeah Oahu is all good. Most of Hawai'i is good too except for that lower Puna area. I wouldn't hesitate to fly into Hilo.

Next month thinking about going to Kona, a friend did some badass night time manta ray snorkel over there.

Feel terrible for the people living in the area....but cannot wait until it's appropriate/safe to sight see the lava flow again....
