Its a shame the weather was bad. Couldn't go up to Mauna Kea, road was closed due to high winds 74-88mph

What i did on big island:

Wednesday:
Took a quick 30 minute 5am flight from HNL to KOA.
Picked up rental Jeep.
Ate at a really shitty place with really shitty corned beef hash.
Drove down to "Two Step" and snorkeled with spinner dolphins.
Drove down to South Point and jumped in to the ocean.
Off-roaded it to Green Sand Beach.
Drove all the way to Hilo thinking we'd just chill there until we could drive up to Mauna Kea. But the road up to the summit remained closed due to ice/snow and 88mph winds. Was closed my entire trip to the big island. (reopened on Monday)
Ate some pizza and wings at Pizza Hawaii & Deli
Ended up crashing at a shitty hotel in Hilo. $80/night for Reeds Bay Resort Hotel.

Thursday:
Rolled out of the hotel around 10am.
Ate at Kens House of Pancakes, got their corned beef hash with pancakes (much much better corned beef hash)
Went to Rainbow Falls, went to the top of the water fall, took pictures and explored around.
Drove down to Kehena Black Sand Beach, which turns out is a nude beach... thought i'd have to poke my eyes out, but hot damn!
Drove to Kalapana and picked up bicycle rentals.
Rode all the way in over the lava fields and tiny houses towards Kamakuna and the firehose. Hiked around over the lava fields trying to find exposed lava to poke with a stick. Wandered around till it was dark but couldn't find anything so we went to the lava viewing point and watched the firehose. Awesome.
Drove all the way back to Hilo, had a quick bite of chicken wings, nachos and beer at Hilo Town Tavern. (was the only place still opened) Listened to some guys stand up which made fun of asians. Then the DJ came on played house music. Chilled with some locals.
Drove to Kolekole Gulch Park. Camped over night.

Friday:
Woke up around 9am.
Went to Akaka falls, nice to look at. But meh because I wish I could've hiked to the top instead of looking at it with a bajillion Korean tourists.
Drove along the 19 towards Waimea.
Ate at Hawaiian Style Cafe. Got their daily special Loco Moco which uses fresh beef instead of frozen beef. (or so the waitress says)
Drove to beach 69 and oogled at the chicks at the beach.
Drove back to Two Step to try and find some Honu to snorkel with. unsuccessful.
Packed up all our camping gear and shit for our flight.
Took a 1 hour earlier flight from KOA back to HNL.

That about sums it up. lots of fun

any suggestions? Haven't seen any in this thread for the big island. Just Maui and Oahu.

Majofo?
Nice pics and glad you enjoyed your stay here in the rainbow state.

Very bad news, as of November of 2017, the ocean entry of lava has been stopped...I'm heading back to big island this weekend so we'll see....

I have the Oahu revealed guide book, very very useful for all kinds of things. Buy it or get it free from local library...

If you're coming in winter, def a bit limited in certain areas for swimming due to high waves on north shore, but sometimes if the pipe cooperates there can be some awesome wave watching action. Also whale watching cruises are nice since they are here until march/april. (though maui is most popular for whale watches)

If its your first time, def hit up all the main spots: Pearl Harbor, Iolani palace, polynesian cultural center for the shows/luau (run by mormons so no drinks), a couple friends visited and we did Chief's Luau...it was alright, but we thought the food was very meh (there's also Paradise Cove Luau that is on the west side, supposed to be great location with sunset/ocean views) people watch in waikiki. Snorkel at hanauma bay. Diamond Head hike is classic. Makapuu lighthouse hike. Can also drive up Tantalus drive for nice sunset view with no hiking needed for great view. Pali puka lookout right off the pali highway. Dole pineapple plantation tour.

Seceret tip for snorkeling at the world famous hanauma bay: go to wednesday. They close it on tuesday for cleaning and letting the reef/fish rest, so Wed is when its the "cleanest"

And of course the drive up to north shore is amazing, with highway right next to beautiful beach/coastline, truly paradise looking.

Also Laie Point is very cool to check out right next to the polynesian cultural center.

My condo looks over ala moana beach park...which is great alternative and still somewhat close to waikiki area. (Actually I can see the hilton from my balcony, heh).
Don't miss the friday night fireworks that the hilton puts on each week.

Shark cove supposed to be great for north shore snorkeling but winter may be too rough waters. There's a turtle beach up there but I haven't found it for sure yet.

One thing that I thought was GREAT is the hike up to Kaena Point State park. It's all the way up on the northwest corner of Oahu. Drive up the west side/farrington highway until it ends, park and hike out next to awesome coastal areas, ends in a bird sanctuary. Bring lots of water/shade. Whales can be seen breaching in distance if you're lucky. You can also drive to this from the north end but I wouldn't recommend it...since the hike is along 4WD road and is not as scenic. You can potentially take a rental Jeep there but I think you're supposed to have a permit to drive 4WD to kaena point from the north side....

One place I liked is Aloha Poke on the west side of the island...great poke for good prices and is a real local spot.

I tried to avoid big chain restaurants. Liliha bakery for sweet stuff, Rainbow Drive-In for the mixed plate, and of course theres tons of asian places all over....Marukame Udon in waikik is great for udon.

Gyu kaku japanese bbq to us was incredible deal for lunch special....$12 and you get 2 BBQ items (they have nice beef), with soup, rice, salad, and edamame.

Oahu you don't really need 4WD for most spots....unlike Big Island which can be very helpful. Get a convertible if you want to splurge.

haha, I can fit in pretty good though...i'm 100% chinese (but culturally half american since I grew up in US since age 12) so I can sneak in. But my skin is too pale and no hawaiian accent/tongue.....

my company-paid rental car does not help though....big stickers on rental car window just screams tourist!

I was at the big island while ago at a more local beach and was kindly gestured to another parking spot in my rental jeep....

Hilton Hawaiian is a great family place to stay.
It's fucking packed and chaotic, but it'll be great for the fam.
A lot more comfortable than most Waikiki spots.

Definitely get a car. Are you bringing your own seats.
Probably rent a seat for the 3 year old there (rental company)
Bring one for the 1 year old (gate check, get a carrier bag).

I'd get a sedan or CUV. Not too big because parking
Sedan over CUV for securing items, but it's much better to keep your valuables with you.
My boy can pop a truck and lift your bags in the time it takes you to walk 100 ft.
It was pretty common for tourist to get robbed when they do a mini-stop at a lookout.

I told my stupid co-worker to watch out.. what does he do?
Gets his bag and laptop with sensitive and confidential work stolen from his trunk.
Talk about a kook.

I'll shoot you a PM of stuff to check out

that's all it'll cost me.

lodging: I stay at my friends house in Salt Lake
transportation: borrow my friends Taco

the only remaining costs would be food, gas and the exorbitant about of money I'll spend at 939/rockza/femme nu.

So in a way my flight only costed me $197 RT.

Since my flight out of SFO with United was delayed 4.5 hours, United gave me a $100 travel voucher for the inconvenience. Not quite the 10K voucher i wanted thou
