Doomsday is now closer!!!!!

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The keepers of the "Doomsday Clock" plan to move its hands forward next Wednesday to reflect what they call worsening nuclear and climate threats to the world.

The symbolic clock, maintained by the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, currently is set at seven minutes to midnight, with midnight marking global catastrophe.

The group did not say in which direction the hands would move. But in a news release previewing an event next Wednesday, they said the change was based on "worsening nuclear, climate threats" to the world.

"The major new step reflects growing concerns about a 'Second Nuclear Age' marked by grave threats, including: nuclear ambitions in Iran and North Korea, unsecured nuclear materials in Russia and elsewhere, the continuing 'launch-ready' status of 2,000 of the 25,000 nuclear weapons held by the U.S. and Russia, escalating terrorism, and new pressure from climate change for expanded civilian nuclear power that could increase proliferation risks," the release reads.

The clock was last pushed forward by two minutes to seven minutes to midnight in 2002 amid concerns about the proliferation of nuclear, biological and other weapons and the threat of terrorism.

When it was created by the magazine's staff in 1947, it was initially set at seven minutes to midnight and has moved 17 times since then.

It was as close as two minutes to midnight in 1953 following U.S. and Soviet hydrogen bomb tests, and as far away as 17 minutes to midnight in 1991 after the superpowers reached agreement on a nuclear arms reductions.

They can move the hands to midnight if they choose. It isn't going change shit. It's a clock.

I think most are closet communists.

do they have a plan in place in case every manager of the doomsday clock dies in doomsday. and if that said event happens and the clock never reaches midnight, is it really doomsday?

For some, not being able to own an iPhone is doomsday, for others, not gaining rep points is doomsday.

I say fuck doomsday, stop whining and enjoy life.

I put the odds at a nuclear war within the next 20 years at 5% at most.

Yes, but I'd put the odds at the use of a device much higher.

That clock sucks. I would have made it much more creepy. Think fallout shelter with some gothic clock complete with fire and fog effects.

The XX minutes to midnight thing sounds cool though. Though I am thinking maybe they didn't get the memo that midnight is when it all starts

someone photoshop the clock and replace it with a turntable to make it look like the guy is mixing sinatra. maybe that'll cheer them up or something.

OK OK I have a plan... so we all get really really stoned and go break into that place. Then we move the hand to "Doomsday". Everybody outside dies. We, naturally, stay alive.

Then we go outside after all of the crazy stuff ends and eat all the Twinkies, Slim Jims and Guzzle all the Yoo Hoo.

Then we all meet back at the doomsday thingie a few hours later and move it back a few minutes. Everyone outside comes back to life and we all go home with secret smiles on our faces.

So is next Tuesday at say... 6:00 good for everyone?

Doomsday clock moved closer to midnight

Citing ongoing threats from nuclear proliferation, climate change, and the need to find sustainable and safe sources of energy, scientists moved the "Doomsday Clock" one minute closer to midnight on Tuesday.

The clock was moved from six to five minutes to midnight.

The clock is symbolic and has been maintained by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists since 1947. The closer to a setting of midnight it gets, the closer it is estimated that a global disaster will occur.

"It is five minutes to midnight," the scientists reported Tuesday. "Two years ago, it appeared that world leaders might address the truly global threats that we face. In many cases, that trend has not continued or been reversed."

"There are still 20,000 nuclear weapons in the world, enough to kill all of humanity many times over," said Robert Socolow of Princeton University at a press conference in Washington D.C., on Tuesday.

The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists was founded in 1945 by University of Chicago scientists who had helped develop the first atomic weapons in the Manhattan Project. The scientists created the Doomsday Clock in 1947 using the imagery of apocalypse (midnight) and the contemporary idiom of nuclear explosion (countdown to zero), to convey threats to humanity and the Earth.

The bulletin has grown into an organization focused more generally on manmade threats to human civilization.

The Doomsday Clock was most recently moved back from five to six minutes to midnight in 2010, in a response to the worldwide reduction of nuclear weapons and attempts to limit climate change.

The clock came closest to midnight just two minutes away in 1953 after the successful test of a hydrogen bomb by the USA. It has been as far away as 17 minutes, set there in 1991 following the demise of the Soviet Union.

Fuck it, give me the button. I'll push it, man doesn't belong on this Earth anyways. We've been here too long and science will continue to keep us here when we should have died out.
