Yeah, but still less than the 2014 rate. I am not trying to discount the seriousness nor am I critizing the exposure it's getting. I think there has been such an emphasis put on it that it seems more than normal when it's actually not. The phenomenon is similar to the shark attack and football death exposure in 2000 and 2001 before the media had 9/11 to talk about.

It's sad no doubt, but it isn't unusual.

Not unusual, as though we should NOT lament each loss? No one is making a 'bigger' deal about this than before, they (myself included and thanks to Mike for starting the thread) are making "a" deal about it.

There were 47 deaths by gunfire last year. No one is hoping to beat the record, but the year isn't over yet.

There have been 101 officer death in the line of duty this year.

cool account of a traffic stop

link isn't showing

Quote:
So, I'm driving to my office to turn in my weekly paperwork. A headlight is out. I see a Tucson Police Department squad vehicle turn around and follow me. I'm already preparing for the stop.
The lights go on and I pull over. The officer asks me how I'm doing, and then asks if I have any weapons.
"Yes, sir. I'm a concealed carry permit holder and my weapon is located on my right hip. My wallet is in my back-right pocket."
The officer explains for his safety and mine, he needs to disarm me for the stop. I understand, and I unlock the vehicle. I explain that I'm running a 7TS ALS holster but from the angle, the second officer can't unholster it. Lead officer asks me to step out, and I do so slowly. Officer relieves me of my Glock and compliments the X300U I'm running on it. He also sees my military ID and I tell him I'm with the National Guard.
Lead officer points out my registration card is out of date but he knows my registration is up to date. He goes back to run my license. I know he's got me on at least two infractions. I'm thinking of how to pay them.
Officers return with my Glock in an evidence back, locked and cleared. "Because you were cool with us and didn't give us grief, I'm just going to leave it at a verbal warning. Get that headlight fixed as soon as possible."
I smile. "Thank you, sir."
I'm a black man wearing a hoodie and strapped. According to certain social movements, I shouldn't be alive right now because the police are allegedly out to kill minorities.
Maybe...just maybe...that notion is bunk.
Maybe if you treat police officers with respect, they will do the same to you.
Police officers are people, too. By far and large, most are good people and they're not out to get you.
I'd like to thank those two officers and TPD in general for another professional contact.
We talk so much about the bad apples who shouldn't be wearing a badge. I'd like to spread the word about an example of men who earned their badges and exemplify what that badge stands for.
‪#‎BlueLivesMatter‬ ‪#‎AllLivesMatter‬
[EDIT: In my rush to post, I accidentally omitted that my wallet was in the back-right pocket, near my firearm. This was the primary motivation for temporary disarmament. The post has been modified to reflect that.
Again, I'd like to thank the TPD and their officers for their consistent professionalism, courtesy, and the good work that they do, both in this particular contact and every day.]

Not sure why you focused on my last sentence without any mention of my second. All I am saying is that 2015 is on pace to be in the top 3 fewest LEO fatality years ever. Zero is ideal, sure, but that is Liberal unicorn utopia land talk around here. Seems we should be celebrating the trend down, don't you think?

idk.. maybe in retaliation for an arrest.. he might have ties to unsavory individuals, who knows. He was 29, unmarried, no kids. His personal life will go under scrutiny. I just hope they got the individuals responsible and anyone tied to the shooting.

Apparently it was a random robbery attempt gone bad in an open parking lot next to the police station- see Teen charged in Downey officer's killing is innocent, his sister says - LA Times.

Officer Galvez was not in uniform sitting in his BMW 335 when he was shot.

I mean seriously.. it's a huge fucking police headquarters building, lines of marked patrol cars. Well lit.. adjacent from City Hall..

They are either the stupidest motherfuckers in the history of stupid motherfuckers, or it's a ruse. I don't think anyone in that car is innocent, whether or not they pulled the trigger.

Yes, the post-suicide investigation findings have been in the headlines on national news websites too. I think his wife and an adult son are currently under investigation for the embezzlement issues.

IIRC, the police chief was pretty irate when the coroner refused to rule out suicide a few days after the officer's death. I'm glad the three guys that were originally detained weren't charged with his death.

This story gets crazier and crazier. Some of the allegations I have seen: He potentially tried to take a hit out on someone and was planning to plant cocaine on someone to frame them. Plus, he had his son marry the woman he was having an affair with, in order to get her a green card.He also had a long history of sexual harassment and violence complaints. A real piece work it sounds like.

Prince William County officer killed on first day on street - CNN.com

Quote:
CNN)A Virginia police officer was killed while responding to a domestic-related shooting a day after she was sworn in, authorities said. Prince William County police officer Ashley Guindon was killed Saturday night in Lake Ridge. She was sworn in Friday.
Her first day on the job. Her first assignment, I believe.

The houses in that helicopter video are not the type I would expect for this kind of crime. I don't know anything about Virginia or Woodbridge, but the cheapest house on Zillow for that area that looks even remotely close to those is $300k. WTF?

RIP Ofc. David Glasser

https://www.odmp.org/officer/22839-p...-david-glasser

Quote:
Police Officer David Glasser succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained the previous day after responding to a burglary in progress at a home near the intersection of 51st Avenue and Baseline Road.

The homeowner had called 911 to report that his son was stealing items from the home. As officers arrived on the scene they encountered the son sitting in a van in the driveway. The subject immediately opened fire on the officers, striking Officer Glasser. Other officers returned fire and killed the subject.

Officer Glasser was flown to a local hospital where he remained in critical condition until succumbing to his wounds the following day.

Officer Glasser had served with the Phoenix Police Department for 12 years and was assigned to the Neighborhood Enforcement Team. He is survived by his wife and two children.

RIP... so sad to read such news. At some point in the past I looked online for a news source that only had good news.... it becomes depressing.

So Stogie I fully agree with your statement above and do not think the officer's life should be written off as a statistic.

It was a pleasant surprise to read since it was the basis of my comments in the other thread when you treated unarmed kids' lives as part of a statistic (see your post below), and yes, I thought a big deal should be made about that as well. Or is that a one way street for you?

Has the media found a social issue that generates ratings and therefore we hear about every time some citizen doesn't like what the police do? You bet.
So basically you can either accept the "not unusual" reply above, or choose to make a deal out of every such loss.

I for one, agree with you, a deal should be made out of every such loss.

FFS, Leave that shit out of this thread. You are the jerk who shows up at the Vietnam War memorial to protest the deaths of civilians in war. You just have no sense of what's appropriate and what isn't.

I tried. I am done with you.

Yes yes.. of course. No evasion there.

Dunno what you're doing on an online public forum Stogie. I think after a decade you started thinking this online place is your home, and associate threads with different parts of a city. And others need your permission to come feel 'at home' in it, etc.

I think your hiatus was a good idea; prolong it.
