This thread inspired me and I went ahead and bought a merkur 34C, AOS badger brush, a huge blade sampler pack, and probably 6 soaps. Still deciding which blades I like but will probably buy a longer DE and a heavier, bigger badger brush. Great shaves tho!

Made a quick stand for them and my tooth brush cup, still needs some poly on it but I had to leave town for work and ran out of time. Not the cleanest work but not bad for a noob. I think I'm going to get some nice hardwood and make a better one with 45 degree angles and have it hold another brush and razor on the back.

This inspired me, to stop paying so damn much for razors. Full beard for over a year. Though I paid twenty bucks for a groomer.

I have a beard but shave my neck every other day. I also shave my head every other day in the shower. I'm a member of the dollar shave club and don't have any problems.

http://www.dollarshaveclub.com/

Anyone else shave their heads? Recommendations on good lotions. Been dry lately. Good just be the radiator heat in the house this rime of year..

^ the "patina" is commonly called "soap scum". It comes off with some bathroom cleaner and an old toothbrush. Polishes up to a nice shine.

it's 20 bux, why not try it. https://www.onerazor.com/ It's all about the weight and size that you prefer followed by your favorite blades.

PS I'm 100000% certain he does not use that razor to shave his head. He'd look like this if he did:

Wrote down the number but didn`t pull the trigger on it. I liked his shtick that you should buy this because everybody else is basically ripping you off.

I bought a straight razor a month ago and have been terrified to use it

I still use the DE with just water/after a shower to touch up and electric for my face.

Here is the old Gillette next to the new one. Notice the old one has a dial 1-9 on it, you dial it to how close you want your shave. Now to find razors.

I actually don't use a DE but exclusively use a straight razor with disposable blades. It took a while but I've been using it 4+ years. I break DE blades in half like they do at my barbershop. I also have a fancy art of shaving stainless straight razor but it's a bit heavy and I rarely use it.

Was thinking of getting Rick Harrisson's as my first DE to try it out for for kicks.

One of the linked articles notes that it may be a version of a Chinese DE handle that is actually a knock-off of the Gillette I use and posted pics of earlier.

Easier to just by the Gillette on eBay and get the real deal.

Handle: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1958-Gillette-Super-Speed-Flair-Tip-DE-Razor-NICE-SHAPE-D-1-/400654003785?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5d48d6ee49

Parker 99R is the handle I'm using now. Graduate from a Merkur 180 long handle. The weight of the Parker is much nicer.

Thank you. I love the Futur as it is truly a solid made razor but one flaw it has it cant get to the tight spots and edges like under nose. With a feather blade I don't have the balls to keep digging in those spots, lol. I think superspeed would provide the flexibility I seek as now I use Gillette Fusion for those hard to reach areas. But again Futur, with a few days of growth I get a thick beard, I just crank it to 4 and bye bye hair in one pass. Awesome.

1st impressions of the DE Razor (Gillette). Had a nice beard going before shaving. Put a fresh blade in and after a few passes came out with a nice shave. Mine has a dial on it 1-9, used mine on 3. It takes a little more time but a closer cleaner shave.

OK, crazy question for the DE crowd...

any of you ever try flipping a blade over after a few shaves?

I use the same blade for 5 days. After day three I now flip the blade over. I feel like it is sharper than not doing so for the last two days.

anyone else do this or want to try it in order to see if it works?

It's not $, the only way I can remember when to change the blade is to do it once a week, Monday morning. That means I use a blade for five days. I wanted to see if flipping it over made a difference halfway through.

I do from time to time. From science point of view I don't think it should be any sharper though.

That's probably a better method than waiting until it starts to catch on my skin rather than my hair.

Flipping DE blades, AFAIK, is a thing from the depression. You're not getting anything from it.

Most HQ DE blades aren't even worth doing the oil trick as they are made to resist oxidation.

And as mentioned, they are so cheap, why bother?

Figured I'd throw this out there, as I can't be the only one who's done it...

When changing blades one your DE razor, be careful not to overtighten the handle when putting it back together. I did that a couple weeks ago and snapped the part off that it screws on to (Merkur Model 180).

The worst part wasn't shelling out the $35 for a new one...it was using a disposable until the new DE arrived.

Ok if it's question day...

How is everyone cleaning their razors? I usually just put mine in the dishwasher. Lol

Flipping blades is a mental thing Once the edge loses sharpness meaning it it not long a straight edge you can flip all day long

My favorite 2 blades are:

and

and I'm trying these, as they are between the above two, sharp and smoother.

If I have a huge growth I'll go with Feather right away. Otherwise I shave daily with the Gillette 7Oclock. I'm trying Personna as they combine the two and are super cheap. I'm running out of all other ones. If Personna turns out to be no good, I'd stick solely to Feathers.

STOP. Let me save your face. go buy some blades at a shave shop. Feather, Shark, etc... 100% difference. I started with the WS blades and was in complete awe when I switched to a higher quality blade.

.20 a PIECE for WS? wow.

100 for $10
