TL 6MT vs Cobalt SS (turbo model)

Hey guys, long time no talk I moved to Myrtle Beach NC for a job and had the pleasure of running a stock turbo cobalt my 2nd week here

Went twice from a 40mph roll and I pulled 1 car lenght each time. Then he wanted a 20mph roll so I said why not, ended up with the same result. Ended up stopping all runs midway thru 4th gear. Each run I would get a car lenght and it stayed like that, I didn't pull anymore and he didnt inch any closer.

I was alone and he had his gf in the car. I had 2 boxes of cleaning chemicals in the truck (work related) that weighed at least 50 pounds .

It was funny cuz his gf screamed out "now I know that thing aint stock" haha and I told em I had exhaust mods. Precats, Jpipe, Test pipe, Pulley, Checkvalve delete and CAI.

Still nice to know my car runs strong with 114K on the clock

Nice run Alex. The Cobalt should've pulled but as already said, anything can happen on the street as we both know/have experienced If his gf wasn't in the car I'm sure it prob would've been dead even. Sounds like a cool girl!

What happened to your exhaust?

Just noticed another 6MT TL ran a Cobalt SS on this site, couple lines down from my thread. Interesting how I pulled a car immediately and it stayed like that while in the other thread/race the TL didn't pull till 4th gear.

We raced 3 times so I'm sure driver error is out of the question...maybe his gf really did have a BIG affect on his cars performance lol they were definitely surprised by the outcome. Should have seen the drivers bug eyes when we pulled next to each other hahahaha he didn't expect that at all.

Could brake boosting have something to do with it? If he didn't brake boost maybe it was enough for me to jump ahead and then keep that distance...idk

Hey Sonnick, I sold it a while ago to CltotheTL32 (Tyler). I miss it sooooo freaking much lol it made my car complete.

If I find him again I'll be sure to ask for another run, it's a small town and he was a local so it'll be easy to track him down.

On another note I have my car up for sale now, trying to sign a deal on a 135i I've been searching for one for at least a month! Can't wait!! Wanna buy my TL?? haha hope all is well with you man!

Nice choice. Its about as close as you can get to a pure sports car & still have sort of 4 seats. For a relatively small amount of cash low twelve's are right there.

Add a LSD, big down pipes, meth injection & its a low/mid eleven car that is still an excellent street ride.

JB4 and DCI will be ordered the minute I sign some papers. After that I'm hoping for downpipes and exhaust. I'm still researching meth...never had a turbo car so I'm learning haha it'll be nice to drive around in a car that can easily trap 112+mph

Meth system is pricey $500 + $130 for the elbow but if you are going to run it hard on the street or be a track regular you will need it for the higher level JB4 maps because of our 93 octane fuel. I have seen dynos of your potential car fully bolted up with meth putting out 430WHP. WOO HOO

Top maps can generate 17lbs of boost. With that boost level some guys have dipped into the 11 second range with about the same mods that would be standard for a full bolt-on TL.

I have the $500 JB4 Combo Package which included the laptop link, but can't install it till I finish rebuilding the AC system in my truck. Hope to be done today. The 335is comes with the performance exhaust & with the is package extra oil & water coolers I should be good to go.

The JB4 delivery was fast, maybe 2 days from order. Expect to run the more conservative 1/5 maps so I will not be adding meth at the start. Will be good for upper 12's 111mph or so. Might try map 2 on occasion with some av-gas mixed in the tank

I call bull shit... I raced one at the track right before I sold my boosted 420a t3t4 eclipse. I was pushing 441 at the crank, and I pulled 2-3 car lengths on him, however he was still hanging on. Those things are quick, all he had was a tune and a few bolt ons. I doubt your heavy ass TL could touch it.

Wasn't it? Just proves my point he's lying. He has to defend himself in 2 posts.

POS corvette eh?

I doubt you would "make all this up" (as you put it). Im just saying you more than likely lost, unless steven hawkins was driving that cobalt SS. Or it was just a regular a cobalt with SS emblems on it.

Maybe he didn't know how to drive it, maybe that was it. All I'm saying is I pulled a car length. On paper that thing would show me it's taillights.

For what its worth stock supercharged Cobalt's run about the same as a TL 6MT all over the 14 second range. The 13 second versions are running typically an extra 3lbs of boost & bigger (42lb) injectors along with the typical bolt ons. The 12 second ones are running bigger turbos & up to 22lbs of boost along with a trash bag to pick up the pieces.

I have no idea what bearing your encounter with a tuned/bolted, Turbo Cobalt has to do with this encounter with a stock one. Please insert foot in mouth and do some reading. Thanks.

Just ignore him dude. Regardless, nice kill! Good to know that your 6MT can hold it's own even after 114,000 miles! And good luck getting the 135i, those cars are bad ass. I would prefer the 335i though simply for space.

You really must be 11 if you think 38 is old.

Anyway, please post a point of reference for your statistics.

^ You want me to cite my references also?

I told you, I raced on in a fully built, t3t4 eclipse. I'll break it down for ya, I know how the Alzheimers is. I was pushing damn near 450hp. 8 550cc injectors forged internals, megasquirt, the whole shabang. This dude, in a semi stock cobalt ss was running low 13s, high 12s I believe. He was right behind me. And I know his shit was running race fuel or anything like that because they inspect your car before you are allowed to race and anything over 400hp, they make u wear a helmet, (he did not have one on) and anything over 600 I believe, you need a rollcage.

THEREFORE...

Did you read his story?

He raced a stock Cobalt SS Turbo .. not a "semi" stock.

Alex's car is pretty quick with exhaust mods, his car was 102mph+ in the quarter mile .. a small amount of driver error with the added weight could put it at a disadvantage.

Sounds plausible to me, we don't care about your "dude" with a modded Cobalt SS.

It would take a lot for a TL 6MT / Accord 6MT to keep up with a lightly modded Cobalt SS. We both know they make great power for little money, turbos =

Then again, a full bolt on J30 / J32 can make anywhere up to 260+ without a tune and theoretically 300+ with ... Cobalt SSs make that with a tap of a button with 400 less pounds to lug around.

Btw, anyone know if he would have had a better chance if he was brake boosting? Or does that only matter with an upgraded turbo?

Small turbos spool up pretty fast so I don’t think loading it on the line would matter to much getting out of the hole. Its more likely it would over torque the tires & lose traction.

The JB4 you are thinking about if you get the 135 has the capability to dial boost back in both first & second gears to keep the tires from frying when you launch.
