raced a modded STI...

[preface] I don't really race or drive too fast. I enjoy the comfort of my car so I usually just drive normally. I've only race once previously to this since buying my car last Feb.

I come up to a light near my house that has a long straight away. When I pull up to the light I light up right next to a 2004-2005 STI (blue color). At first I wasn't going to race just because I knew I'd get blown away. I said "F" it, i'm going to do it. As the light turned green we slowly rolled to about 10mph and then i punched it right when he punched it. I jumped out about 3/4 of a car. I was really surprised at first, until I heard his turbo kick in. He pulled up to my front wheel at the end of his second gear, he pulled up to my bumper at the end of 3rd and passed me in 4th. It turns out that he lived in my complex so when we both pulled in he asked me what I had done to my car. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!! (well, tint lol). He was pretty suprised since he has a full exhaust system and FMIC and something else that seemed pretty minor.

This encounter makes me want to get somethings for my car even though i'm pretty sure that I won't actually beat an STI unless I got a Turbo or something. Just thought I'd share this with you guys.

cool story, bro.

random encounters like that are fun. i'm like you, usually just drive normally. so far i've only had a SI try and take me, but i don't think he knew how to drive bc he fell behind quick.

now that you have the itch, what're you thinking about getting?

I love stories like this, even if you lose the other person is so mad that they didnt just blow you away, i saw the title and i thought oh god he got killed! Haha.
I am thinking dude didnt really know how to drive but i would jump all over a J-Pipe and pre cats if you want the best improvement. i did my jpipe 3rd cat delete and and exhaust and the car felt like a new animial! I took my friends 98 M3 and my brothers 00 A4T like the were standing still... made me buy my supercharger just thinking about what else i could do!

300HP @ 3200# vs. 258HP @3600#
even a TLS 286HP @ 3600#

2004 STi maybe only a second quicker in the 1/4, so an early jump always helps.

I'm going to get an Intake (Takeda?) J-Pipe (VR6 new one with the extension?) and an exhaust.

like another member mentioned, richies v3 PCDS or high flow precats will add massive power. also look into UR pulley. what kind of exhaust are you thinking about?

sounds like you got a solid plan tho

probably looking into the XLR8 exhaust single tip since the dual tip won't fit on my car unless I replace my current A-spec rear with a newer one if I'm correct. When you add those mods, will you be also adding a lot of noise?

Nice run

I will say this though...don't get too stoked, because the results seen here are few and far between. It seems the STi has a case of "my car is really fast....when someone else drives it."

An STi with a full exhaust/FMIC should RAPE a stock 6MT TL. By that I mean 3-4 cars from a 1st gear roll. Modifying the exhaust on those cars adds like 40-50whp alone. Ahh but wait, did he have a tune? If not, turbo cars live on the tune. That could be part of the problem.

With that said, I still think you should mod your TL. If I would've known the TL came in 6MT when I was looking for a car a few years ago I might be rocking one right now

You're definitely correct about the jump. I used to own an STi; the lag period between your minimal boost (2-3 lbs) and full pressure (14.7 lbs) was quite the window - especially out of first gear. Subaru makes a wonderful AWD powertrain, but the gearing is rather tall. His catchup in second through fourth makes sense as your peak boost intervals are consistent through those power bands.

I like hearing about things like this too. Buddy of mine had an 2G TL back in the day, drives a Si now, but he admittedly knows better!

Gearing is tall?? I would've said the opposite. 2nd gear doesn't even touch 60, 3rd gear barely touches 80, and 4th is like 102. I'd say the gears are too short for it's power.

It was probably a wrx... or the driver in the STi didn't know how to drive.

^ I think more pertinent info has been supported by fact already...
I LOVE when I do OK against a car I expect to wipe it's ass with me. I am looking into the PCD's and Jpipe myself...
Since I decided to keep the car, figured I'd make her a little faster on a budget.

^ I'm just saying. I did a quick test again last night just to make sure the TL didn't game crazy horsepower over night on me.

It didn't matter what roll speed or dig run I did, the result was the same.

I had some dude in a WRX tell me I had no chance and gave me a thumbs down while we were driving intraffic. He then dropped it and zoomed off bobbing and weaving thru traffic! I thought to my self "well no shit d-bag! You "have no chance" of getting me to race you thru traffic jackass"

i hate faggot wrx sti owners weaving in and out of traffic... were you in your ls6?

I had a kid in a ls2 do a ricer flyby on me in traffic before... if the car wasn't so cool, I would do a pit maneuver on that d-bag.

Man it sucks that someone stole your camera that day!!! I would have ask u to post that video up for me.. I rem the video of second race and me hitting the wall was just nuts.. So the cause of it was my knuckle and spindle bolt came lose on the passenger. When i launch it at full boost then hit the nitrous the spindle came apart and just i lost control from there cause i couldnt steer. I almost hit U! Glad u stayed on it
