Modded SRT-4 vs. TL-S

I've seen this red SRT-4 at the local hang-out spot just about every time I was there, and I was curious as to how my car would do against it.

Last weekend I was out of town, but my friend Johnson raced him in his Audi S4 from a 40-mph roll and absolutely smoked him (car's capable of low 12's easily). The SRT-4 owner just wanted to see how he would do against a heavily modified S4.

Afterwards, Johnson talked to him about running my TL-S and he was down. I was told to show up at the spot around 10:30 on Friday night. We met up, and talked for a little bit; he asked me what I have done to my car and I told him. He was all about it, so we set off to a remote location to race. He didn't want to do it from a stop, so we agreed on a race from a roll.

First run -- roll start from 25 mph.

Immediately, I jumped ahead by about 2-3 carlengths and kept the pedal buried in the carpet until I hit about 105 mph. The gap had not changed at all during this time.

Second run -- roll start from 40 mph.

He insisted on running from 40 mph this time, because at 25, he had no boost. I agreed and we went at the third honk. Right away, he jumped ahead by 2-3 carlengths, but as I built up my RPM (40 mph is not a strong point in the TL-S) I kept up. However, I hit the rev limiter shifting into 3rd gear, but I didn't lose much ground. I shut it down at about 105 mph again, and the gap had not changed much at all.

Before we had time for a third run, we heard it on the scanner that we were called in so we took off and met up at the spot again.

He was a cool guy and acknowledged that one had an unfair advantage over the other in each run, and agreed with me that the best way to settle it is at the drag strip. I found out that he has Mopar Stage 1 and a few more mods of his own and ran 13.7@101 on drag radials at the dragstrip. He was quite surprised to learn that I had only run 14.5 last season (I haven't been to the drag strip yet this season; no new numbers), but understood that my trap speed was 99 hence the close runs.

Overall, I was glad that he wasn't just another shit-talker, but a genuine car enthusiast, and that my car did pretty decent against a modded SRT-4.

He had previously run this modified Grand Prix GTP running low 13's and lost every time. I raced the same GTP and lost by a bumper at 90-95. But this was from a dead stop and it was also about 50 degrees out, so not exactly a good comparison among the three of us (it was about 77 degrees when I raced the SRT-4). It will be interesting to see how we do at the drag strip under the same weather conditions.

It says in his sig it's an 03 TL, so it must be an auto. Nice to see not all of us SRT guys are 18 year old pieces of crap.

Mine's a UA5, and manual transmission was never offered on the UA4 and UA5 ('99-'01 and '02-'03, respectively).

As far as I know, he's like 20 years old, but not another one of those cocky SRT-4 owners. I've seen my fair share of arrogant SRT-4 guys and it can get pretty bad at times.

it definitely helps to meet a cool driver. i raced a civic hatchback going home from work one night and happened to see the same kid at the local drugstore a week later. he turned out to be really cool and we hung out for a while discussing all the engine work he had done (full swap and rebuild with a bigger engine, and i still beat him )

but my point is, it is refreshing to meet cool people out on the streets when so many are really arrogant and rude.
