Friend of mine has an auto tl/shift poit question
My friend has a 3g 5at and he was wondering what the beat shift points were, i told him to shift outta first by 6500 and take 2nd and 3rd to redline, is that a good idea or is he outta powerband in 2nd by redlining?

He needs a dyno run to pick the best shift points, other than that its just guess work.

keep it in vtec at shift points, but yes the dyno will illustrate that precise rpm, but its a slushbox with shifts that ultimately cannot be controlled that finely

Its just a matter of figuring the shift lever/paddle to actual shift lag & shifting at an earlier point on the tack.
I have the quickest shifting auto available & the JB4 gives me a shift light at the RPM point I want to shift at. There is still a reaction time lag, light flash to paddle pull, to account for so my lights are set to hit a few RPM early to account for it.
I have been using shift lights going back to 4MT days in the early '60's.

with the J series, I think the power drops after 6200? but, with the huge drop in rpm from the auto gear ratio, its better to max out the rpm in each gear from my experience. its MOST crucial in the 3-4 gear shift because you will fall flat after the shift. let it max out at 109mph in 3rd before shifting

There is also the elapsed time between RPM that needs to be considered. Some times the last 500rpm or so can just take too much clock time to complete to actually do any good to the cars 0-60 or 1/4 mile time.
Pro teams spend a lot of money on high tech gear to try to solve the when to shift issue.
