I shifted into third and stayed in it till 108 when 3rd ends. I was only 3/4 car ahead maybe a hole car. Thats some shit. I got home did a little research and found out they have a turbo V6 putting out 276hp

The Sonata has a turbo-4 so this might make us feel a little worse now. They are pretty quick. Remember, just because a car is quick does not make it a great vehicle- the Dodge SRT-4 is one that comes to mind. I would like to hear how well it does in a slalom or auto-cross situation before making any opinions.

The Sonata is a great bang-for-the-buck car. You get performance, style, and features for a pretty reasonable price. The one problem with the package is the dealer service and perhaps that will get improved in time as well. That brand is up and coming but I still think you would take him in a full-out top-end race like on an Autobahn in Germany.

Ok- how about all of us ignore the last few posts and move on? This thread is a lot better than the 'wow my mirrors don't tilt' threads that get started every once in a while. This at least covers performance related to our cars.

I just tried pricing an SE Turbo and it comes in at 28k, but doesn't have as many bells and whistles as our car which is 6 years old in Sleeper's case. Technology is improving so it's perfectly understandable for a newer car to outperform our cars at some point. Also when it comes to looks, the TL beats the Sonata too and of coarse that one is subjective.

I didn't come here to instigate or argue. The thread is in the wrong section of the forums to begin with. Secondly, re-read all your thread topics, they are either in the wrong section or has been posted about 100 times and can easily be searched. You made a thread where you thought a Hyundai was a complete inferior vehicle and thought that the TL is 100% performance oriented. Almost like telling us that you lost to a Genesis, obviously... Also the Hyundai couldve had mods, never think of that?

What do you mean by head work?

I don't believe it. If you look at the dyno curve the TL in any form beats the Sonata across the whole range. Then you also should know the Sonata does not give full power until 4th gear. (And 4th is what the dyno was taken at.) Also the car rags show the Sonata turbo at greater the 6.5 0-60 they never specify because it is really BS for the stated 274 HP. But Hyundai also messes with the ECU to lower output to save the transmission and warranty. The Sonata Turbo cannot take a Mazda 6 V6 or a Toyota Camry V6.

Automatic '04 TL racing a Hyundai Sonata. Sounds like the special olympics.

Regardless, peak #'s mean little about a cars performance.

Edmunds did a dyno on the turbo and all the numbers are low. As opposed to what Hyundai marketing states the car has no low end torque and nothing until 66 mph in 4th gear. I looked at Hyundai Sonata in detail and found HP that actually gets to the ground does not match the engine figures they quote. As used TL-S costs less than a Hyundai Sonata Turbo.

I'm surprised you beat it....Turbo'ed 4 banger, plus its DOHC. Our J series engines being SOHC puts down a lot of torque, but it doesn't have high end power. Thats the only flaw about our engines, other than that, our cars are F'in heavy.

^ true, also need to compare OP owns an 04 car. The Hyundai is 6 years newer! I never expect a car that is direct competition to remain the same over 6 years...

I hate to say it but Hyundai Sonata IS in direct competition with the TL market. Sure you can get a TL-S for far less than a brand new Sonata, but then you don't get a brand new car and a lot of people are really stuck on the "new car smell"

I personally will not consider the Hyundai's quality cars. The issues that they have had with 2.0T is embarrassment. They market the car as the sports car "ready to tune" and then as soon as you tune it, the motor blows and then they void your warranty for tuning the car....

Don't expect ANY Hyundai to be susceptible to engine modifications for at least another 5 or 6 years.

I'm not so sure about the Sonata being a competitor to the TL. Likely candidates are the Genesis or Azera, but certainly not the Sonata.

Don't expect ANY Hyundai to be susceptible to engine modifications for at least another 5 or 6 years.[/I]
I'm not excited about Korean cars but I disagree with your assertion. The Tiburon and Genesis models do have an aftermarket parts market and if you happen to be in FL, I'm sure you'll see plenty all riced-out.

Hyundai's reliability has certainly improved over the years. Would certainly love to hear the input from a long-term owner.

A couple things with the Hyundai Sonata is the flat out lie about the HP but since their customer base is not enthusiasts they never figure that out. What good is a flywheel HP value if the ECU acts to protect the warranty.

Hyundai marketing says the offer a manual transmission in the GLS but most customers opt for the automatic.

What they don't tell you in if you opt for the manual. Then you get NO options available. Gee you think that may have something to do with that?

Then to add insult to injury Hyundai messes with ECU on the manual so the throttle is dampened after every shift. Imagine shifting a car and having the acceleration being delayed for a second. Again it is done to preserve the warranty.

The Sonata 2.0T already has a documented case of intake valves cracking, and many owners report the car pulling left "all the time". Both not resolved.

Then you have the sealed automatic transmission and a first design by Hyundai.

The 2.0T is definitely suitable for lease only. Which may be a good deal because Hyundai want to keep the perception up so it will keep the ALG high. Guess they are will to eat a few grand per car down the road.
