6MT Accord vs 850i
Happy New Years everybody! First race of 2011.
I was coming home from my buddy's house at 7am and came across a BMW 850i on the 15 freeway... with no traffic
He was driving a little faster than normal and I began pacing him. I downshifted to 4th and we did a 85 - 130 roll. I put about 2 car lengths on him at about 120 and he starts reeling me in at about 125 - 130. To my amazement, he ends up a comfortable 1 car length ahead.
I couldn't believe the top end of that car, I thought I had a for sure victory and he eventually passes me waving .
What surprises me most is the factory times for this car:
1994 BMW 850i
0-60: 6.3
1/4: 14.9
Maybe he was modded? Maybe this car has incredible top end?
Either way, I lost .. it was a good race for sure.

He may just have better gearing and/or aero on the top end. Good race! You're brave, I wouldn't have thought to race the morning after new years when all the cops are probably still out looking for drunks.
Just for an example, I have a friend with a '08 turbo cobalt with boltons + tune who traps 112-115 at the 1/4 mile (340-350ish whp). When we roll race, he pulls on me up to around 135 or so (2-3 cars), then I reel him back in by 150 and pass him. We're both pretty certain it's because his 5th gear is like my 6th gear (very low highway gear), and he shifts to 5th around 140. My 5th gear is still pulling strong in the 140-160 range so I walk right back past him and start pulling cars by the time I hit the top of 5th around 160.
Do you upshift to 5th around 120? That would help explain why he came back past you after 120.

Nice run. I didn't even know there was an 8 series
Honestly, at speeds like that it doesn't even matter lol. Good to hear you pulled 2 cars through the top of 4th gear.
Slow, yes 4th gear ends ~125 or so. 5th gear in the Accord really doesn't pull much....

That's what I expected, I wouldn't feel bad at all about the loss. Should have just shut down at the top of 4th!

I think the 850i is a V12.
Don't know the drag coefficient or weight of those things, but I bet they weight a nice chunk more than the 7G Accord. Probably why you got ahead during the beginning of the race, but at higher speeds I don't think weight plays as much of a factor.
Psst: You almost beat a V12 BMW

Right, cause 282 bhp (V8 automatic only), 296 bhp (V12 automatic or 6mt), or 322 bhp (V12 automatic only), all make a 4350 lb car so blindingly fast. Especially with that early '90's automatic transmission technology! 0-60 can be yours in a scalding 7 seconds!

You had to quote 4 messages? Lol.
LS3 Vette, nice Those are some nasty cars.
That's fine. All I'm saying is that for you to say you'd "play with" an Accord 6MT in your TL 6MT is just silly. They are pretty equally matched in terms of straight line performance. The 4G obviously would have the better 0-60 and 1/4 mile times with it's AWD. But from a roll, a slightly modded Accord would be close.
