07 TL-S losing to stock 16 VW GTI

Hi all,
been on these forums for quite some time now laying low and just gathering information. I finally pulled the trigger on a ASM 07 type s TL with 129k miles. Car has been great lately other than a small fault with the APP sensor. Just wondering why I'm losing to my friend with 210 hp and same torque as us from a roll around 15 mph.. his gti cant keep up with me in 1st and 2nd but once I hit 3rd he's gone.. I'm using paddle shifters and shifting right before redline. If someone could enlighten me on if I'm supposed to be losing to these? Or I'm doing something wrong that would be great. Thank you.

Having the same torque numbers or Crank HP numbers doesn't mean you guys are equal.

Weight is a big factor. Gearing is also a factor. A 200/200 car weighing 3500lb vs a 200/200 car weighing 2500lb, who do you think will win? Assuming everything else equal, both same gear ratios and transmission, the lighter car will win.

You lost because the GTI has an excellent DSG 6 speed gearbox, and is also lighter, while you have a slushbox geared for fuel economy. I have a 5AT UA7 too, third gear sucks, after 3rd gear, it's time to shed tears.

His car is 600lbs lighter and has a real gearbox. Also, stop street racing.

also, have you seen what 2015 has brought to the table??????
2015 has to be one of the best years for cars, great year to purchase a 700hp beast.

what I'm trying to say is; new cars employ new technology that will completely leave your car in the dust.

in the example you provided; you're the underdog.

That GTi has a short gear manual, you have a slushbox with paddle shifts.
His car has 258lbs torque the TLS has 256lbs torque
He gets his torque way earlier then you in the RPM band
His GTI weights the same as the TLS if you add 3 fat friends to his car.
So with all that said he should be smoking you from 15mph roll or dead stops.
Very dangerous but if you race him from a 50mph and on it will be very close

I feel Darwinism will take care of some of these guys. Let's just hope their Darwin moves don't impact anyone else.

GTI is turbo and hits peak torque way down low in the rpm range. By the time the TL hits it's peak power in the power curve, that GTI is already putting down the same power, 3000rpm earlier.

Plus it weighs less.

OP you just need to do more research on the race itself, HP does matter however many other factors count like power to weight ratio, torque band, power band, drive train layout, gearing ratio. Like someone above mention the TL tech is kinda outdated already even back in it day, 5spd AT while most other car using 6spd another thing is car using direct injection.

ITT: people pretending they've never done anything dangerous on the road.

The GTI has a considerably lower weight, and probably has different gear ratios.

I have never raced anyone to 100+ on the public roads. Never done anything dangerous? Never said that...you are correct that we are all guilty of at least something.

I'll admit I lit a mortar firework and launched it out the passenger window. I'm pretty sure everyone who sat in the car has lung cancer now.
